Ahlan wa Sahlan! This class will focus on obtaining proficiency in effective
communication of the Arabic language. Specifically: speaking, listening, reading, writing,
and culture. Students will exhibit mastery of content areas through performance in these
five areas. This is a participation class! Please prepare to get to know your classmates,
your teacher, yourself, and the language.
Grading Standards: Will be based on the following percentage scale:
94 - 100% = A
87 - 89% = B+
77 - 79% = C+
67 - 69% = D+
90 - 93% = A-83 - 86% = B
73 - 76% = C
63 - 66% = D
80 - 82% = B70 - 72% = C60 - 62% = D0 - 59% = F
Students will be assigned points for each assignment and the assessment items. Final
grades will be assigned according to a total points system. At the end of each quarter,
total points are converted to a percentage and then a letter grade as listed above. Students
will be graded by performance in each of the following skill areas: reading, writing,
speaking, listening, and knowledge of culture.
Grades are based on in-class participation, homework assignments, quizzes, oral
presentations, and exams. Attendance is very important and your grade will suffer from
tardies and absences.
Text: Alif Baa and Al-Kitaab, Al-Batal, Brustad, Al-Tonsi. Classroom use only
available for checkout upon request, first come first serve.
Student Responsibilities:
Daily completion of in class assignments, exams, and quarterly projects, including
keeping a well organized binder.
All assignments and exams that are hand written must be legible. Seriously, if I
cant read it you will be redoing it (unless you dont want a grade!)
Come to class on time, prepared with materials (including planner), ready to learn
and have a good attitude!
Cellphones are not allowed in classroom.
Parent Responsibilities:
We learn best by teaching someone else what they have learned. Please allow
your child to share with you what they have learned in Arabic class. There is a lot
of vocabulary to memorize and retain a great way for your child to remember is
to practice at home!

Make up work: Students have up to a week to make up an assignment for full credit with
an excused absence. You must see me! I will not hunt you down to give you your work.
After this point the assignment will be reduced to 50%. If the assignment is not
completed before the test, the assignment will be counted as a zero. Dont let this happen!
Please!
Late Work: (Should this ever happen) will not be given full credit. Assignment value
diminishes 50% until we have taken the test, at which time it will turn to a zero. It is your
job to be responsible. (I reserve the right to work with individual cases. Please see me if
there is a problem you feel is not being addressed. Sometimes I dont know that you need
extra help and or time unless you say something!)
Extra Credit: There will be some opportunities for extra credit.
Materials: You will need a small three ring binder for this class! You will want to have
paper in it and five dividers will be very helpful to you and me both, as you will be
receiving a grade for the organization of your notebook: (daily journal, readings,
vocabulary/grammar, homework/exams, handouts). Please bring a pen and a pencil, your
Arabic binder, and a good attitude to class every single day.
Classroom Policies:
Show respect for yourselves, others, and your environment.
Be prepared mentally and physically. (breakfast, a good nights sleep)
Be on time.
Participate in class!
Appointments: I will be available by appointment during my preparation period. I will
be available for parent conferences by appointment. If you have questions or concerns
about your students progress in my class, please feel free to e-mail me r.safah@utah.edu
