A Summary of my favorite

Math Manipulatives
Graham Collier

Centimeter Snap Cubes or Unfix Snap Cubes

Centimeter Snap Cubes are great assist to the students learning. They can be used
for patterns, measurement, fraction, addition and subtraction. It is a great manipulative
for students to use. It is a beginning step to measurement at the kindergarten level, it can
build up in other math area, such as area and pattern. It is hand on tool and it comes in
different colours. It is very fun and engaging tool that can use multiple times. It can be
use to assess students formatively and summatively.

Base Ten Blocks

I think having the base ten blocks are great to have in the classroom. They are
used as a visual representation for place value. This allow students to represent in the
thousandths, hundredths, tenths and ones place. It will help the students have a better
understand of numbers and the value that they have. The students will build upon their
addition and subtraction skills. Having the base ten blocks will help them understand
math through visuals and hand on. Formative and summative assessments are a great way
to see if the students learn the concepts. Base ten blocks can be use for many different
things in math such as place value, 2-3-4 digit numbers.

Fractions Pieces/Tiles
Fraction manipulative, can be a useful resource to use in the classroom. It will
help the students get a better understanding of what the concepts of fractions are. The
manipulative is a great visual representation that students can connect the number form.
The students can make connections with the real world; example of this would be sharing
with food such as pizza or a chocolate bar. Being hands on with fractions can allow the
student to have a better understanding of the concept. It is great for operations,
comparing/ordering, equivalent fractions and problem solving. It shows students
equivalency and it is a hands on manipulative that can use in all grade levels. Teachers
can use the manipulative on the over head projector to model what they are trying to
teach students.

Two Sided Counters

Two sided counters are very manipulative that can be in the classroom. They can
be used for different areas of math such as counting. They are very hand on tool to have
in the classroom. Students can use counters to help them with their counting, adding,
subtraction, multiplication and division skills. The counters can be used to support the
math areas of four operations; which are probability, fractions, numeration and integers.
Having counters gives the students real hands on experience working with numbers.

Number Chart
Having a number chart in the classroom is a very valuable math tool. It is visual
and something that the student can refer to. Placing a number chart on the wall in the
classroom allows your students to see the visual representations that it has. Also, creating
mini- number charts for each student to help them with their mental math. They can be
used to easily identify for patterns, skip counting, and fractions, numeration (rounding
numbers, prime/composite number, compare numbers), for operation, mental math
strategies and probability. The number chart is a great resource to have in every
elementary classroom.
