Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

Create a pictorial representation of the arrival of an immigrant arriving to Australia using Pic Collage app.

Interpret pictorial text and provide a comment on at least two other students work.

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:

- Prepare the iPads
- Ensure that all iPads have the Pic Collage
application downloaded
- Make sure the internet is working on all of the iPads
required

Provision for students at educational risk:

Students that are at a higher level can enhance their
collage by adding more photos to their collage and
demonstrating a clear beginning, middle and end.
In lieu of finding all the images on Britannica, the
students that may find it difficult may use the camera
facility to show facial expressions instead of finding a
larger amount of images.

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)

Time

Motivation and Introduction:

5 mins

The book The Arrival will be introduced to demonstrate how meaning can be
generated from texts without words.
The book will provide the students with an understanding of the visual aspect
as to what they are required to do in this particular lesson.

Resources/References
Align these with the
segment where they will
be introduced.
Tan, S (2009) The Arrival.
Sydney, Australia: Lothian
Books.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

35 mins

Students will individually use Britannica to collect images from both their
chosen country and of Australia. The images are saved in the Photos App of
the iPads.
The students use Pic Collage to make a textless story to depict the journey
from their chosen country through to the arrival in Australia.
There are two focus questions for this particular lesson. They are as follows:
-

What emotions would you go through if you were arriving in another

country?

How do we get images from Britannica onto our photo app?

These questions will enable the students to have a basic understanding of the
requirements for the lesson, but they will also enable students to use their
prior knowledge to remember what they should already know how to do.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

8 mins

Students upload their work to their Kidblog and comment on 3 other collages,
giving their interpretation of what is going on in the depiction.
This will allow the students to give constructive criticism to their peers and
encourages them to use helpful thoughts to allow the students to understand
what they can do better next time.

2 mins

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

Students will be asked to return the iPads and sit back at their desks for the
next lesson to commence.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
Students submit their Spider scribe to Kidblog. Teacher uses a Pic Collage
Rubric (see Teachers Page)
