Inquiry (5E) Lesson Plan

Subject: Geometry

Grade: Highschool
Geometry

Standard:
HS.G-GPE.A.1. Derive the equation of a circle of given center and radius using the Pythagorean
Theorem; complete the square to find the center and radius of a circle given by an equation.

HS.MP.8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

HS.MP.7. Look for and make use of structure.

Objective (Explicit):
80% of the students will be able to complete 10 math problems at 75% accuracy by the following
class period. These problems involve finding the equation of various circles.
Evidence of Mastery: On ten problems, 80% of students will be able to find the equation of a circle at 75%
accuracy.
Hook: The teacher will ask a question such as How would you create a wheel of a car? to engage the
students. The question will involve using the equation of a circle to find the answer.
Sub-objectives:
Finding circumference given a point on a graph and a line segment
Finding the center of a circle
Using how to build the equation of a circle to solve word problems.
Key vocabulary: Circle, Radius, Diameter,
Materials: Six inch rulers, Whiteboard or Smart
Circumference, Pythagorean therom
board, String,
Engage
Teacher Will: Start off with a hook question. The
Teacher will say something like:
The world has run out of gas and electicity. You are
trying to create a wheel for a cart that you created but
have a ruler that is too short to measure the length from
the axle to the rim of the cart you created. How would
you figure out the circumference so that you do not
waste time creating a wheel that does not fit? The
teacher will also ask questions such as:
What can we find out about this situation?
What information do we already know?

Students Will: After the teacher asks these

questions, the students will start to discuss
amongst themselves what they know about the
problem, what can they find out about the
problem, and how they will solve this problem.
The students will also start asking questions of
their own. Such as how can we find the radius?
What do I know about this situation that will allow
me to find information that can help solve this
question?

This will also help the teacher evaluate the students

prior knowledge based on what they write down or say
in response to What information do we already
know?
Explore
Teacher Will: The teacher will tell the students that
they have about 5 to 10 minutes to work with their
table groups on creating a solution to the problem. The

teacher will also be making sure that students are
staying on task by redirecting their attention if they are
doing something else. This can be done by sparking
their atteintion through asking them different questions
that would cause them to become more interested in the
topic.
Questions:
What are some mesurements that you can find?
What other shapes can you create that would
help you find what you are looking for?
How can this apply to all situations?
Co-Teaching Strategy
One co-teaching approach that I could use to maximize student achievement is One Teach One Assist. This
would allow the students to be able to get help from both teachers yet the teacher that is conducting the
lesson would be posing the questions for the class.
Differentiation Strategy
Some accomodations that could be made is to provide more time for the activity. The co-teacher could also
be assisting the students that need accommodations.
Students that need an additional challenge could be put into different groups and be assigned the
responsibility of group leader/facilitator.
Explain

misconceptions the teacher can discuss them with the
class. The teacher will also be connecting their ideas to
the pythagorean theorm and other prior knowledge.
Co-Teaching Strategy
The co-teaching approach that I would use to maximize student achievement is one teach one assist.
Differentiation Strategy
For students that have trouble following the discussion, the teacher can write on the board what has been
discussed. For a student that needs more of a challenge, the teacher could have them write down the key
points of the class discussion on the board.
Elaborate
Teacher Will: During the discussion the teacher will
ask how they can apply what they have found to all
situations. The teacher might ask questions such as

they know (pythagorean theorm) and start to ask
questions about how they might form a general

What if the circle is a different size? The teacher will

provide information to the students about the
Pythagorean theorem and how they can set it up using
variables to solve for the different problems. The
teacher will provide the class with two points on a
graph as a resource for using to solve another specific
case. The teacher will be walking around helping the
students as needed. After the students work on finding
a equation that they think will work in creating a
formula the teacher will discuss with them what they
have found and lead them to a correct equation if
necessary.

way to solve this problem for any size circle, and

they will attempt to solve the new problem using
the prior discussion. They will use the pythagorean
theorm and variables to help them find a way to
come up with a formula for the equation of a
circle.

Co-Teaching Strategy
One co-teaching strategy that can be used is one teach one assist which will allow there to be one teacher
facilitating the discussion while the other teacher will be helping the students through asking questions that
they might have.
Differentiation Strategy
The teacher can pair the groups up in sets of two groups and have them discuss what they have learned so
that the discussions are in smaller groups and the students can collaborate what they have found. Then, all
the groups will come back together for a larger group discussion.

teacher through asking questions.
While the students are working on this task the
teacher will be walking around asking questions.
Closing: The teacher will ask the question What did we learn today? and allow the students to respond
verbally. The teacher will then collect the written answers.
