Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
Describe the food web of a coral reef.

Explain how global warming effects seasonal changes and in turn causing coral death.

Analyse the effect on the coral reef ecosystem in the event of coral death through global warming.
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:
Provision for students at educational risk:
Send email to students to remind them to bring

Lesson Steps: (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

18
Mins

1. Students will work in groups of three to investigate:

o How coral has changed over the years and what has caused the
change. Students must include what animals and plants have
already been affected by the reducing amount of coral in the ocean.
o What is predicted to happen to coral in the future and why it will
happen.
o How will a decrease in the amount of coral affect other animals and
plants.
o Each question will be allocated to one person in the group, to
ensure they are all doing individual work.

Students will write down the important information they find in
Hackpad.
2. Students will go to the website to collaborate the information that was found
during the investigation.
3. The students will create a flow chart of the biology that has been affected.
o Beginning with coral and expanding off of it with what the loss of
coral will do to other animals or plants. Then what the loss of those
animals and plant will do in regards to other living organisms.
o

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

14
Mins

Show video The future of coral reefs from Scootle. 1:05

Students get into groups and create brainstorm, using coggle.it on how
they think we should go about saving the coral reef ecosystems from
collapse.
Discuss group findings with class.
Use a Socrative quiz to briefly test student learning through the lesson.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

Students are to complete a blog entry on their Kidblog's defining the

meaning of Introduced Species.
