Date(s) of Lesson: Nearing Applying Time of the Year

Content Standards:
ISTE-T Standards 1C: Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity. Promote
student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students conceptual
understanding and thinking, planning, and creative process. Through my interpretation of
this standard, the lesson is planned to engage the students through getting them out of the
classroom and collaborating with the environment around them to then reflect and
conceptualize their tour when they return back to the classroom.
Learner Background:
In preparation for the lesson I would have the students write down some specific
questions that they hope to answer about the specific college that we will be visiting. The
plan is to visit a college that a large majority of students have peeked an interest in
applying to. This lesson is designed to be used nearing the time that students are applying
for colleges. This could be with juniors in High School as well as seniors. I have designed
this a lesson for a first college visit so the students are not expected to have much
knowledge of the place they are visiting. Some students may be very knowledgeable and
others may not have a clue. The idea is to create an atmosphere that is interactive as well
as informative, leaving the students wanting to ask more and not bored with just
presenting information they could have read in a pamphlet.
Student Learning Objective(s):
As a college visit, I will not have as much specific control on what the tour guide will
talk about. However, having experience as a tour guide for a college, I have a more
generalized idea of how the tour will go. The idea is to have the students engaged and
excited about visiting a new place. Make sure that it is interactive and not just another
classroom presentation but that the students are able to walk/bus around the campus,
taking in all the visuals that they can.
Assessment:
After the students return to back to the high school classroom, I think that it is very
beneficial to hold a reflection period. This can be using a presentation or just by
discussing what the students liked, disliked, or were unsure about.
For the assessment material at the end of the presentation, I will use a brief survey (no
more than a half sheet of paper) with the following questions.
1. Was this information relevant to you? Rate 1-5
2. Did your perception of the college change? Yes or no and why
3. Other questions that you have for me?
4. Are you ready to apply for this college?
Materials/Resources: List the materials you will use in each learning activity including
any technological resources.
Funds to travel to college
Bus driver

College to travel
Additional supervisor (teachers)
Projector with Screen (optional)
Short survey printed copies

Learning Activities:
Group of students (probably best to have no more than 20). Technology has a way of
making things easier in connecting with people. Without the use of technology, my plan
is to take the students to the place the old fashion way. With the use of the projector I will
be able to use the aid for fun visuals and informative slides that will help those watching
to follow along at the conclusion of the trip
Initiation:
Once the group is organized and on the bus, I can spend some time for the first 5
to 10 minutes explaining about where we are going, along with general
demographics of the school, and even some fun facts.
Learning Goals:
First my goal is to have each student come away with at least one new piece of
information that they did not previously know.
Secondly, the students should find this lesson interesting and appealing to them. I
hope that the tour is engaging and fun for the students as well as sparks their
interest about attending college.
Lesson Development:
The basis of the lesson is going to be dependent on the visit and the college tour
guide. I would plan the tour to be no more than a half day, leaving in the morning
from the high school. This is however going to depend on the location of the
college and the travel time it is going to take to get there. If the funds are
conducive I think it would be great to have the students eat in a college cafeteria
for that experience. The tour should hit the major landmarks of the college as well
as vising student areas such as the student commons like the library, union, and
residence halls. I also think that showing a lecture hall and classroom is also a
great tour point so the students can really visualize themselves their academically
as well as socially.
Closure:
As closure, I would allow for a significant period of Q & A. It is important that
the students have enough time to ask the questions that are on their minds from
the trip.
I would conclude the discussion with the students on letting them know that there
are so many different kinds of schools amongst the categories that we discussed,
and that this is only the beginning of our searching process. It is good to keep an
open mind about the different schools and that you give them a chance so you do
not overlook a school that might be your perfect fit! This is also the time when I

would conduct the short survey from the students and to collect any information
from the volunteers that they wanted to share on how the class time went.
