DOC 97/03

1. Introduction
In all European countries, the valve outlet connections for gas cylinders have been developed more or
less independently from each other. The consequence is that for one gas, different connections are
being used across Europe. Although the connections used in the respective countries are safe they
are not compatible with those used in other countries.
This Document was prepared to facilitate harmonisation of the gas cylinders valve outlets across
Europe.
The wish of the Industry is to have the possibility to keep the national valves outlets. The NEVOC
(New European Valve Outlet Connections) system is intended to be used in case of the need for new
outlets to facilitate future harmonisation.
The industry (EIGA Companies) have agreed to commit themselves to use, in case of the need for
new outlets, the ones corresponding to the NEVOC system.
For example, if for a 200 bar outlet 2 different groups of gases are used, e.g. same outlet for oxygen
(oxidising) and nitrogen (asphyxiating) and if this country decides to differentiate oxidising gases from
asphyxiating gases, the corresponding oxidising and asphyxiated outlet of the NEVOC system should
be used. Another example concerns new applications such as 300 bar outlets; the corresponding 300
bar outlet of the NEVOC system shall be used.
The current national connections systems are listed in part 1 of this document. They can continue to
be used in the country concerned. The new connections system is based on ISO 5145 and represents
a New European Valve Outlet Connections (NEVOC)
2. Scope
This document applies to valve outlet connections for gas cylinders. Part 1 lists the outlet connections
which at present are being used in the CEN members states.
Part 2 explains how to select a new valve outlet connection from ISO 5145.
Part 1
Valve outlet connections for gas cylinders listed in part 1 (national connections) may be used in those
CEN member states, which are assigned to the respective connections.
In the event that the current national connections are being replaced by new ones, for whatever
reasons, then connections according to part 2 of this document should be chosen.
Part 2
This describes the valve outlet connections for gas cylinders, which represented a New European
Outlet Connection (NEVOC) based upon ISO 5145.
Note
The following are excluded from this document:

Ultra high integrity service valve outlets (see ISO 10692-1).

Valve outlets for small medical gas cylinders (< 5 litres) see EN 850 and ISO 407.

Valve outlets for LPG cylinders (but included are valve outlets for pure Propane, Butane).

Valve outlets for cryogenic gas withdrawal.

4. Part 2: New European Valve Outlet Connections (NEVOC) recommendation

EIGA recommends, that if there is a requirement for a new valve outlet, e.g. due to pressure increase,
new gas mixture or for a new medical gas mixture, then the valve outlet corresponding to this new
application shall be selected in accordance with the latest version of ISO 5145 2003.

6. Adapters
Due to the fact that it is expected to have two parallel valve outlet connection systems in Europe for a
long period of time:
a)

National valve outlet standards (Part1)

b)

New European valve outlet connections (Part 2)

There are two choices to provide interchangeability:

1) Equipment used connected to the cylinder valve should be changed to the appropriate valve
outlet connection of the new European valve outlet connection in order to ensure safe operation.

IGC

DOC 97/03

2) Where problems occur to change the equipment together with the valve outlet connection,
adapters may be used.
Where the use of adapters is unavoidable, only the adapters shown in this standard (see Part 2,
annex 1) shall be used and carefully controlled.
This Document recognises adapters designed to connect a cylinder valve outlet to a regulator,
charging connection or other mating part having a different connection for the same gas and
pressure. Adapters are permitted for standard connections between standard (Part 2) and limited
national standard connections (Part 1) for the same gas, unless the use of such adapters could
result in undesirable connections. For example,. even for the same gas, adapters must not be
used which connect a high pressure source to equipment rated at a lower pressure. Other
adapters may be used by suppliers of gases or related equipment at their facilities.
An example of what could be one of these safe adapters is given in part 2, annex 1.
