    PolicenowacknowledgeswabsusedtocollectDNAsampleswerecontaminatedbyaninnocentwoman
    workinginafactoryinBavaria.
    'Serialkiller'
    Policesuspectedtheunnamedwomanofbeingaserialkillerwhoover16yearscarriedoutastringof
    sixmurders,includingstranglingapensioner.

    Shewasalternativelycalledthe"womanwithoutaface"andthe"phantomofHeilbronn"afterthe
    cityinsouthernGermanywheresheallegedlykilledapolicewoman.
    PolicesuspicionswerebasedontracesofidenticalfemaleDNAtheyfoundat40crimescenesacross
    southernGermanyandAustria.
    AfterfindingherDNAatthesceneofthemurderofa22yearpolicewomanfromHeilbronnin2007,
    policeoffereda300,000eurorewardforinformationleadingtoherarrest.
    However,policedidnotcomeanyclosertoidentifyingtheirmostsoughtsuspect.
    Firstdoubts
    AccordingtoprosecutorsinthesouthwesterntownofSaarbruecken,doubtsabouttheexistenceof
    the"phantomkiller"wereraisedwhenherDNAappearedondocumentsbelongingtoapersonwho
    haddiedinafire.
    Whenpolicefirsttriedtoidentifythevictim,theyfoundthephantom'sDNAonthedeadperson'sID.
    Butinasubsequenttest,notraceofthephantom'sDNAcouldbefoundonthedocument.
    Thatwasthepointatwhichalarmbellsstartedringingandinvestigatorsbegantosuspectthatthe
    testmaterialitselfmayhavebeencontaminatedwithDNA,prosecutorssay.
    NowithasbeendeterminedthatthecottonswabsusedtocollectDNAhadbeencontaminated
    accidentlybyawomanworkingatanunidentifiedfactoryinBavaria.
    "Thepuzzleofthephantomkillerhasbeensolved,"saidVolkerLink,aprosecutorinHeilbronn.
    Onecompanymakingswabssaidtheywerenotintendedforanalytical,butonlymedicaluse,while
    anothersaidthattherehadbeennorequirementfortheswabstobefreeofDNA.
