Explanation of Assessment Data Analysis:

After analyzing the data I collected upon grading and observing the
assessment I issued to the students in order to assess their understanding of the
size and scale of the planets in our solar system, I overall feel that my assessment
was valid; however, it could have been much more reliable for the students. I used
Microsoft 2007 to help me make sense to the data that I collected, and to help me
determine that my assessment could have been more reliable for multiple reasons.
A first reason why I feel that the assessment I created was valid would be
because the questions I provided the students with to assess their understanding
were formatted in a way that the students were already familiar to. We had
reviewed the exact questions over the past two days in great detail, so I believe the

students had a good understanding of the importance of knowing the material.
Each day, I provided the students with a warm-up exercise to make sure that they
were grasping the material that I would assess them on, so overall, I really feel that
these questions were present on the assessment. However, there was one question
on the assessment which I believe impacted the validity of the assessment because
it was a question pertaining to information which I had covered with the students for
a portion of the lesson on the first day. However, because I had spent a good
amount of time discussing the concept with the students, I felt that this would be
fair game to assess them on, and also, it was an idea that related to the size of the
planets, which was a main concept I wanted the students to grasp.
Overall, I was quite confident that the majority of the students were
successful in meeting the objectives that I had hoped they would upon completion
of my lessons to them, and I feel that my assessment reflects student achievement
of these goals. Through observing the data I collected, it can be seen that nine out
of thirteen students were successful on my assessment. Though two of the
students had passed the assessment with a 78.6%, I placed these students under
the category of questionable because I feel that through observing their
assessments, I believe that they were able to grasp some, but not all of the
objectives I had hoped. Also, two out of the thirteen students were not successful
on my assessment. A first reason for this would be that one of these students had
not been present either of the two days that I taught, and just out of fairness of
student work time, I issued him the quiz to try to assess what he knew about the
topics we had covered while he was not present, however, I was sure to tell him that
my cooperating teacher and I would catch him up on the material that he missed.
Also, the other student that was not successful on the assessment is known by my

cooperating teacher to not be successful come assessment time, however, seems to
show understanding during class. Lastly, thought I had not provided the learners for
any place on the assessment to exceed expectations, I had chosen five students
that I believe represented that they were confident with the material through a selfassessment question at the end of my assessment. These five students out of the
nine that met criteria showed confidence in their work, and they would be able to
teach this material to others, which I believe is a great achievement.
When reviewing a copy of my assessment after issuing it to the students,
there were several changes that I would make to the assessment to overall increase
the reliability of the assessment, as well as fairness to all learners in the classroom.
A first revision that I would make to the assessment would be to include point
values for the students to see which questions are worth spending more time on
because of their importance. Also, when I had initially graded the quiz, I had done
so in a manner which I believe was inappropriate because I had weighted some
questions too strongly, which overall made the initial scores unreliable. I then
changed the point system when reviewing the quizzes a second time, I believe that
the way which I had weighted each question proved much fairer, but overall I wish I
would have provided these point values to the learners from the start. Secondly,
though many students have been exposed to multiple choice questions sometime
during their academic career thus far, I believe it would have been more appropriate
to also include direct instruction under the multiple choice section on my
assessment just to be consistent with directions throughout the assessment. I final
change that I would have made to my assessment would have been to create an
answer key prior to issuing the quiz to the students, and actually taken the quiz
myself to see if, as a student, I would be able to clearly understand the expectations

of each question. After distributing the test to the students, I had realized a typing
error on one of the questions, that an important detail necessary to understand the
question was omitted. When I asked for the students attention to address this error
to them, I verbally informed the class to make an edition to the quiz. However, I
unfortunately did not accommodate all learners as best as I should have. Looking
back I wish I would have not only verbally communicated my error, but also it would
have been helpful for students that are not auditory learners to also write the
correction on the board for them to see. In the future, this will be a practice that I
am sure to not overlook again because I really feel that I had unfortunately put
some students at a disadvantage to this question because of not just one, but two
of my mistakes. Overall, these additions to my assessment would have overall
made the test much more reliable to represent student understanding.
In my opinion, this was overall an extremely beneficial assignment that I feel
privileged to have had the opportunity to pursue because I really feel that it gave
me a true understanding of the challenges and joys of being an educator. I feel
that I have had the opportunity to grow within all of the Wisconsin Teaching
Standards, as well as the Alverno Ability of Coordination because I was placed in an
Astronomy class, so it really required me to plan for the unexpected and to be
willing to learn the material in order to be able to develop meaningful lesson for the
learners. I really look forward to having my own classroom one day, and when that
day comes, I only hope that I will be able to develop effective assessments that are
valid in representing student achievements on the goals I had hoped for them, as
well as is a reliable source of showing this as well.
