Lesson Cycle

Lesson Title/Topic: Orbit Me, Orbit You, Orbit Us

Target Concept: 5th grade
Standards/Rationale: 5.8.C Earth and space. The student knows that there are recognizable
patterns in the natural world and among the Sun, Earth, and Moon system. The student is
expected to demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing
the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky.

Lesson Objectives:

Assessment:

Teach orbital movement

Make sure that the student understands

how and why orbital motion occurs

Materials: students themselves, yellow cape(SUN), white cape(MOON), blue

cape(EARTH), Flip cards with visual representation and basic definition of each
vocabulary word. (enough for pairs and/or groups)

Lesson Cycle: (Direct instruction)

The teacher will:

The student will:

Focus/Mental Set:

Be attentive and watch the video.

https://youtu.be/9n04SEzuvXo

Bring a warm welcome and show a short

youtube video of outerspace. Probably a
video that would expose them or make
them curious to how things work in outer
space.

Teacher Input:
After Joel shows the class the video, Tyler
will write terms on the whiteboard that are

The student will be attentive in class and

relevant of orbital structure of outerspace

and teach them to the class in a first
person point of view.
Gravity- A mutual physical force attracting 2
objects.
Activity- Tyler Will ask the whole class to
jump in the air.
Axis- Imaginary line through the center of
rotation of an object.
Activity- The whole class will lean forward
for the spring season and lean back for the
fall season. Spring Forward and Fall
back.
Rotation- The spin of an object around its
center axis. The earths rotation completes
every 24 hours!
Activity- The whole class will spin in a
circle.
Revolution- The earth's orbital motion
around the sun. 1 revolution makes 1 year
or 365.25 days.
Activity- Tyler will ask the class to spin in a
circle while going in a complete circle.
Requires a group of 2. (1 will be stationary
and 1 will be a planet).
Orbit- The path of an object that is moving
around a 2nd object.
Activity- Tyler will also bring up orbit as the
class is switching partners during
revolution activity.
Prezi:

participate with classroom discussion and

participate in scenarios that pertain the
lesson plan.

Guided Practice:
Amanda will get the class into pairs of two.
Partners will take turns explaining the roles

The student will follow the teachers guided

practice instructions and work diligently
with their partner to understand the roles of
the Orbit cooperatively.

of the parts of the orbit in a pair-share

format.
Independent Practice:
Amanda will ask the students to write a
narrative in 3 paragraphs about the solar
system and how it works by what they

The students will be asked to apply the

information they learned and gained from
the lesson and create a quick write of the
orbit and significances that surround the
topic.

experienced in class.
Closure:
Tyler will ask the class to come together
and simulate a live orbit.

The students will apply the information

they learned from lesson, prezi, and
independent practice and apply it by
creating a live solar system in the
classroom!

Options:
Enrichment: The teacher will provide the
vocabulary words a day before the lesson
and provide a vocabulary test as means to
prepare for the major content of
understand the lesson the next day.

Modifications/Correctives:
Students requiring modifications will be
allowed to give his/her own
understanding through a picture
drawing or a verbal description with
teacher.

Reteach: The teacher will go over indepth with the class with the vocabulary
words and apply it with features that are
understandable to the students. Ex:
Gravity- The teachers drops a pencil in
front of class.
