Chock-full Of China
News!

he October issue of Coatings World is the CHINACOAT2012 Show

Issue where we offer a Preview of the upcoming exhibition, which
will take place Nov. 28-30 in Guangzhou. Each year CHINACOAT
continues to grow and become more sophisticated, mirroring the industry
it serves.
CHINACOAT is the key event for coatings, printing inks and adhesives
suppliers who wish to enter, expand and consolidate their positions in the
Chinese market. Approximately 900 exhibitors from 30 countries/regions
will showcase their products and services in an exhibit area close to 60,000
square meters.
As this issue is heading to Guangzhou, we cover a lot of China ground beginning with our resident China guru Dan Watsons look at Chinas remarkable growth.
In Does Chinas Remarkable Growth Have Feet Of Clay? beginning on
page 56, Dan takes a close look at the slowdown Chinas economy is experiencing. However, despite this slowdown Chinas GDP growth is still expected
to do well compared to other countries and is projected to deliver a relatively
impressive seven to eight percent in 2012.
On page 50, a Q&A with Luke Johnson, senior research analyst at GCiS
Strategic Research, provides an in depth look at Chinas automotive coatings
market. Luke delves into the differences between the repair and OEM coatings
markets as well as the dynamics shaping each.
The paint, coatings, adhesives and sealants industries have put tremendous
emphasis on the Chinese market. Even during the global recession that heavily impacted most of the world, the Chinese coatings industry grew.
The largest international manufacturers all have placed major stakes in
China as they depend more on this growing market to grow their businesses.
As Chinas market continues to grow major paint makers like AkzoNobel, the
worlds largest, continue to invest more dollars to expand their China operations. On page 42 we provide an update of what some of the major paint makers have been up to over the past year in the China market.
Is your company planning to enter the China market anytime soon? Are
you already there? Let us know what your experience has been like. Better
yet, if youre going to be in Guangzhou come and stop by the Coatings World
booth. Wed love to hear your story. See you in Guangzhou!

Arborea Sun: ICA tests its products in the

climates of Florida and Arizona
Program partner Q-Lab leverages its longstanding
experience to conduct the weathering tests.
In 2010, ICA, a group based in the central-Italian city of Civitanova
Marche, in the province of Macerata, that is one of Europe's leading
names in the manufacture and marketing of special coatings for wood,
initiated the Arborea Sun project, which is intended to analyze the performance of its water-based coatings for exteriors, in collaboration with
its technology partner Q-Lab, an accredited laboratory for the durability
testing of materials. Q-Lab was established in 1956 in the United States;
it is based in Ohio, and has a presence in Germany, the UK and China.
The products used in the guaranteed coating cycles have been analyzed, tested and enhanced for more than a decade by the ICA R&D
laboratory. This has allowed the company to verify the effective resistance of its products and, as a result, to guarantee a durability of more
than 10 years. The tested and guaranteed cycles include the topcoats
of the PLUS and Nanotech ranges.
The tests, which were then summarized in the relevant test reports,
encompassed natural weathering processes due to exposure to atmospheric agents such as the sun and water; and accelerated weathering processes using a patented Q-Lab system.
The natural weathering processes were carried out at the Q-Lab
testing station in Homestead, Fla., and involved testing the performance of ICA coatings in warm/humid climatic conditions. The quantity
of energy produced by solar radiation (6588 MJ/m2) and the percentage of relative humidity (70 percent) in this location give a clear idea
of the severity of the test and of the substantial stresses to which the
coated wood sample was subjected.
The effectiveness of the coating cycles was also tested under conditions of exceptional exposure by putting the products to the test in
the desert of Arizona, where the sun exposure is around 20 percent
higher than it is in Florida. The warm/dry climate of Arizona is characterized by very intense sunlight, very high temperatures, reaching up
to 46C during the summer, minimal rain and very low humidity. Over
the course of a year, the average energy in the form of solar rays striking the sample amounts to 8,000 MJ/m2. As such, the extreme temperature shifts between day and night put the wooden surface, and
the coating film applied to it, under considerable stress.

thermoplastic powder coatings.

Innoteks leading thermoplastic technology is a great addition to our global
business," said David Ades, managing director of Protech. "It is complementary to
our extensive thermoset powder coatings
product range.
Protech expects to benet from the
business relationships and the unique thermoplastic technology that Innotek has de-

In addition, ICA has activated the accelerated weathering program

called the Q-TRAC Natural Sunlight Concentrator.
This patented system makes it possible to concentrate, by means of
a series of mirrors, the solar rays on the panel to be tested. In this way,
the natural sunlight concentrated on the samples puts the coating film
under substantial stress.
During the day, a mechanism makes it possible to track the movement of the sun in order to guarantee maximum exposure at all times.
Moreover, from sunset until sunrise, the sample is subjected to a cycle
of humidification using pre-programmed sprays. The test is, then, extremely tough, due not only to the energy involved but also due to the
artificially generated humidity.
The test conducted in Arizona combines the rapidity that is characteristic of an accelerated weathering test with the reliability of a complete spectrum of natural sunlight. By analyzing the amount of solar
energy involved, it can be stated that a six-month cycle with Q-TRAC
in Arizona corresponds to five years of natural exposure in Italy.
For more than two decades, ICA has been developing water-based
products for exteriors and has, therefore, accumulated a wealth of experience in the field that allows it to select very accurately the raw materials and formulations that are best suited to their use.
The weathering tests conducted by third parties complement those
conducted by ICA's in-house laboratories, which for their part provide
crucial information in relatively short timeframes.
Right from its very earliest formulations of water-based coating products, which date from the late '80s, ICA has used its R&D laboratories to
conduct exterior durability testing on an ongoing basis. Since 1996, the
chemical/physical department at the laboratories in Civitanova Marche
has also been conducting in-house artificial aging tests (QUV).
ICA's collaboration with highly qualified partners, as well as the research
carried out in its own labs, together provide the best guarantee of the seriousness of ICA's approach and of the reliability of its products: their durability is ensured both on the basis of current technological standards and on the
basis of the results of multiple aging tests. The constant evolution of the raw
materials and formulations has enabled ICA to offer warranties on its products for periods that, until just a few years ago, would have been unthinkable, but are now entirely realistic. For ICA, dealing with its clients in a
respectful manner means not pretending that its products will last forever,
rather, the company's approach is all about offering cutting-edge products
which deliver the highest levels of performance that can feasibly be achieved.
Alongside Q-Lab, the external laboratories with which ICA collaborates include Catas (Italy), WKI and IFT Rosenheim (Germany).

3M Rolls Out PV Anti-Soiling Coating

By Charles W. Thurston
Diversified 3M Corp. rolled out a new roll-on aftermarket Anti-Soiling Liquid for the glass
covers of flat-mounted photovoltaic solar panels that deters soiling and helps the modules
yield between five percent and 10 percent more energy in comparison testing, according to
Carrie Ruby, a marketer for the St. Paul, Minn.-based company. Water beads up and runs off
panels with the new liquid applied.
Unveiling the product at the Solar Power International 2012 show in Orlando in September, 3M says that the coating will either eliminate the need for PV module cleaning or diminish
the number of cleanings necessary for optimal performance. The coating will sell for the
equivalent of $1 per square meter, with coverage estimated at 20 square meters per liter, assuming a double roller pass.
The solution was tested for eight months in the Arizona desert against modules that did
not receive any cleaning. "Down the road we also will be looking at an OEM product," said
Ruby. With a pH of 3.0, the product has a shelf life of only six months after manufacture, according to 3M. The company estimates that the liquid will last two years after appropriate application, which includes a de-ionized water rinse.
Some solar panel vendors require that owners perform minimal cleaning in order for the
performance warranty for the panel to be valid. Conventional wisdom holds that the cost of
cleaning solar panels outweighs the value of the power loss. In some cases, where a minimum
generation level is required from the system, breach of contract can revoke power royalties,
subsidies and other forms of revenue.
The alternative to using an anti-soiling agent or even cleaning is a dirty solar panel, which
may generate 25 percent or 30 percent less energy if never cleaned, according to data from
Heliotex, a provider of automated solar panel cleaning systems based in Palm Desert, Calif.
One Heliotex system offered online cost $2,000. The Boston Solar Company predicts less extreme power losses from failure to clean, at around eight percent, but dirt occlusion is cumulative. Boston Solar recommends a yearly panel cleaning.
While the new 3M product can be used on residential systems, its application adopting
is more likely with commercial or industrial solar arrays where the amount of power generated is usually guaranteed through a power purchase agreement, in cases of third-party owners of the solar system. Financiers often require a maintenance program for solar systems
they lend to, and cleaning services would be included.
Residential solar panel cleaning services may charge a minimum of $150 for a service call
and up to $30 per panel for cleaning with de-ionized water. Sears sells a telescoping squeegee
package for homeowners for $475. Commercial and industrial panel cleaning services are
likely to cost more, given that ancillary services are likely bundled. So the price point of the
3M liquid seems inexpensive compared with cleaning services, although only a module-specific monitoring system will help system owners know when system output has declined, signaling the potential need for a cleaning.

BASF releases global

automotive color trend report
Designers from BASF Automotive Coatings have announced the results of its latest automotive color trend report. In the
report, BASF color experts from North
America, South America, Europe and Asia
provide a forecast of the automotive colors of the future.
Results from this years report show
future colors will be naturally cultivated
with nuanced berry and copper tones,
along with natural colors such as brown,
blue and green.
Although popular staple colors such as
silver, black and white make up approximately 50 to 80 percent of current production, there is a rich diversity of potential
shades that is returning to the market, said
Paul Czornij, technical manager for the
BASF Color Excellence group. The increasing inclination of society to celebrate beauty
in earth tones and more traditional green
and blue hues is the basis for this trend.
In recent years, the color green has not

played much a role on the roads, yet in four to ve years,

the color is predicted to become more popular. Similarly,
white, silver, and gray will gradually wane in popularity at
the expense of more saturated colors like blues and browns.
There are signs from automakers and consumers that the desire for more color on the roads is continuing. We will be tapping
into further color spaces, such as bronzes and emeralds, says
Mark Gutjahr, head of design for BASF in Europe. The continued high value assigned to the notion of ecology may now again
be signied by the color green.
The topic of sustainability continues to be on the radar, attracting attention to not only the environment, but also the
everyday world. Finding novel ways to use materials, simplify
lifestyles and have a closer focus on daily experiences are the
main inspirations for this trend.
The innovation that arises from this mindset nurtures a
stronger awareness for things great and small, which in turn raises
social responsibility, said Czornij. Colors are being developed
that evoke this sense of purpose, stretching the aforementioned
blue, green and browns into both strong and subtle tones.
Modern communication technologies are triggering huge changes.
Setting the tone are phenomena such as the increasing dematerialization of technology. In the future, technology will be less tangible
in a haptic sense, and instead will be increasingly more intuitive. For
example, smart phones use a touch display instead of a keypad.

We are observing new narrative and haptic qualities in many

areas. Heavy substances, striking surfaces and expressive materials such as wood and stone create a stronger emotional connection to the world we live in. In the automotive world, this
means that we can expect more intensive colors and bolder effects, said Corinna Sy, designer at BASF Coatings Europe. The
new colors are expressive, but not blatant, like a good story.
With dark berries, intensive browns and coppers, along with
radiant emeralds, BASF designers anticipate powerful color experiences on the roads.
Carmakers are working and thinking globally. For this reason, BASFs design team has a global presence, sounding out international trends without ignoring regional features or color
trends. In order to acknowledge the increasing signicance of the
Chinese automotive industry, and specically the local manufacturers, the designers have included special colors, such as various
shades of gold, in their trend collection.
The colors developed for China demonstrate the ability of
BASFs Design Team to utilize its colorant tools and paint technology to span the range of bold blues to elegant browns, golds
and grays. This reects to the local market and its evolution to
more interest in colors as an expression of self. The vivid hues
support these trends and are balanced with metallic effects that
bring increased prominence to this growing segment.

since it contains no heavy metals

or sludge, and lowers water and
energy requirements. According
to Henkel, most solar equipment
manufacturers use a hot-dip galvanization
process to protect their metal parts. While
industry-standard, this process has drawbacks. The high temperatures can introduce stresses in the dipped metal parts.
These stresses and any dimensional distortions can be weak points in a system. Also,
the galvanization process leaves a thick
layer that can be problematic for complex
shapes, especially internal cavities. For example, threaded holes may reduce in size
so that bolts do not t properly. The Aquence process is more precise, and can provide a smoother, higher quality surface for
topcoats and nishes the company said.

The Renish Color Matching Laboratory addresses a major challenge the automotive renish business faces: the growing
number of domestic and import OEM
color offerings and variations including exterior, bumper, accent and underhood colors and the need for collision centers to
match those colors. While an OEM's color
code may prescribe a particular paint formulation, the reality is the actual vehicle
nish color may differ from plant to plant
for any number of reasons. Consequently
color variants are always needed.
PPG's laboratory is equipped to produce accurate color formulations through
improved processes and procedures it
said. Using electronic and scientic methods made possible through state-of-the-art
equipment and proprietary computer software programs, the patent-pending automated system is capable of running
continuously to produce more color formulations, allowing PPG to provide precise color formulas with operational
efciency. The result: quickly obtaining
the right variant and formula the rst
time. The laboratory's capability also allows PPG to expand its data collection
practices, better analyze automotive pigments and explore applicable color formulation opportunities as they occur. CW

Automotive industry boom in Argentina boosts

the paints and coatings market
By Hernan Cavarra
Frost & Sullivan
Industrial and construction growth in Argentina during the past five
years fueled the paints and coatings market and is expected to continue its fast pace. In the paints and coatings industry, like most Latin
American countries, the architecture segment is at the forefront and
accounts for 75 percent of the market, while in the industrial segment,
automotive paints and coatings is the sub-segment leader with almost
eight percent of the market.
During the 2007-2011 period, automotive manufacturing in Argentina grew at a 12.1 percent CAGR, driving other sectors such as
auto parts, adhesives and sealants, and the paints and coatings market, which accounted for an 8.6 percent CAGR. Although the Argentine economy is expected to enter a cooling stage and for industrial
growth to drop, according to IMF (International Monetary Fund) the Argentine GDP is expected to grow at a 3.6 percent rate until 2017.
There is an intrinsic relationship between GDP growth and vehicles
and coatings sales and, due to high inflation rates and Argentine Peso
devaluation, Argentina's middle and high classes are buying cars to
maintain their purchasing power. As a result, the automotive paints
and coatings market is expected to grow at a faster rate than the GDP.

Ceresana analyzes global

growth in biocides market
Market research institute Ceresana forecasts global revenues of the biocides market to be almost US$7.3 billion in 2019.
The prices of biocides vary considerably
depending on the type of product, thus
constituting a crucial inuence on revenues generated in the various elds of application. The sectors paints, disinfectants,
and smaller niche applications in particular utilize biocides that are substantially
more expensive than products applied in,
i.e., water treatment. In quantitative
terms, as far as consumption of biocides
is concerned, the dominating area on the
market for biocides is industrial and public water treatment.
Large regional and application-related
differences are the reasons why this report
also analyzes how the market situation for

The total automotive paints and coatings market in Argentina is expected to grow to almost 30 million liters in volume by 2017 and more
than triple in terms of revenues.
According to Frost & Sullivan, automotive manufacturing in Argentina is forecasted to grow steadily and reach more than 900,000
units of vehicles produced by 2017, while the domestic car fleet is expected to grow at a 3.3 percent CAGR. The refinish segment in Argentina will grow at a higher rate than the OEM segment, mainly due
to car fleet continuous growth, increasing used car sales, high car insurance penetration, and Argentine car owners who take care of their
cars more than in other regional countries.
BASF, DuPont, PPG, Sherwin Williams and Akzo Nobel are the
biggest market participants, and for the forecasted period, these companies will have to address big challenges. Increasing raw material
prices, domestic import restrictions and governmental pressure toward
a self-sustaining automotive and chemical industry are expected to be
the top challenges in the market. In this sense, companies will be
obliged to manufacture their products locally and export in order to
level their trade balances. On the other hand, the national government, through the Ministry of Industry, designed the National Industrial
Plan 2020 that will support the chemical and petrochemical industry
and plans to increase automotive manufacturing up to 1.9 million units
by 2020 and registrations up to 1.6 million units.
A bright future for the automotive paints and coatings market in
Argentina is thus expected during the next five years.

this region is likely to see its share of

worldwide biocide consumption to expand to over 24%. This development will
occur mainly at the expense of Western
Europe and North America, where the
sales markets are already saturated.
Growth impulses generated in those regions will be due less to an increase in
consumption volume within individual
sectors than to alternations between the
different product types. In this regard,
legal requirements as well as health concerns and trends in environmental consciousness are of vital importance.

NanoMarkets releases new

Industry analyst firm NanoMarkets released a new report on display materials: Markets for Optically Functional
Films and Coatings in Displays 2012.
This report analyzes the opportunities
for display films/coatings over the next
eight years. These will grow to nearly
$10 billion ($US) in revenues by 2019
the firm said.
Optically functional lm types covered
in this report include front-surface lms
for antiglare/antireection, viewing angle
compensation and color/contrast enhancement; polarizer lms; and BLU lms
(reectors, diffusers, prisms, reective polarizers, and multifunctional lms). These

various types of biocides is developing.

For example, the highest revenues in 2011
were generated with biocides based on
halogen compounds, followed by metallic
and organosulfur compounds. Demand
for halogen biocides is mainly inuenced
by the water treatment sector. In this application area they are facing strong competition by other chemical products and
alternative measures suchs as UV-radiation or ultraltration.
With a roughly 42 percent share of
global consumption, North America is the
major sales market for biocides, followed
by Western Europe and Asia-Pacic.
Shares in demand of the individual world
regions will continue to shift over the next
eight years. In the past, developing countries in Asia-Pacic have already been able
to prot from the dynamic development
of additional important sales markets for
biocides. Due to the rapid growth in industrial output, demand for biocides in
the sectors water treatment, paints, varnishes, paper, and plastics increases. At the
same time, improved standards of living
and stricter hygiene regulations have
caused utilization in consumer-related sectors such as disinfectants to rise, said
Oliver Kutsch, CEO of Ceresana.
The analysts of Ceresana expect countries in Asia-Pacic, with the exception of
Japan, to increase their shares of the
global market for biocides. Until 2019,

materials are sold for OLED, epaper and plasma display sectors
as well as for the market-dominant LCDs.
Although the display lms business is
mature, NanoMarkets identies OLED displays as presenting a strong long-term market for lm makers as OLEDs begin to take
market share from traditional LCD strongholds such as mobile displays and televisions.
Like LCDs, OLEDs will use antiglare/antireection lms, but their success will also
boost certain kinds of specialist lms. One
opportunity is lms designed to increase the
color uniformity of OLEDs at wider viewing angles. Another is certain kinds of polarizer lms that improve the bright light
readability of OLEDs. And, according to the
report, more immediate opportunities can
still be found in the LCD lm business.
By 2016, contrast/color enhancement
lms for LCDs will bring in almost $300
million. NanoMarkets remains bullish on
this sector, because there is a growing tendency among LCD makers to shift production towards higher performance
displays that urgently need these kinds of
lms. This shift is being driven by competition from both OLEDs and sophisticated
consumers looking for a 3-D/HD visual
environment. These lms may also be
combined with antiglare/antireection
lms to create multifunctional products,
reducing costs further. CW

SMEs In Wood Coatings Sector Are Growing

by Sean Milmo
Europe Correspondent
milmocw@rodpub.com
uropes wood coatings sector is one in
which there are pockets of sluggish
growth or even decline but others in
which there has recently been strong increases
in demand, particularly in Central and Eastern
Europe (CEE).
It is a relatively fragmented market, which
offers a lot of opportunities to medium-sized
and small coatings producers who have the exibility to exploit gaps in supply and to respond
quickly to changes in demand.
The multinationals have been reporting slow
wood coatings growth or weak sales in Europe
as a whole, which they catergorize as a mature
market in the global context, since much of the
existing growth is coming from the emerging
economies in Asia and Latin America.
However, SME wood coatings producers in
Europe, particularly in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and a lesser extent Italy, have been recording
much more robust growth from the major outlets
of construction, furniture and ooring.
In parts of Western Europe, which have been
hit by a post-recession slump in the construction
market, demand for wood coatings for new buildings has been rising because of a rising preference
for less expensive timber-framed houses.
Wood is not necessarily cheaper than other
building materials but it does allow houses to be
constructed much more quickly because components of the building are pre-fabricated, said
a sales executive at one wood coatings business.
At a time of weakness in construction, wood is
a way of reducing costs.
There is also in some areas a buoyant demand
for wood coatings in new upmarket luxury accommodation where potential occupants expect
large amounts of wood panelling, ooring and
furniture, as well as wooden window frames.
The biggest growth in demand for wood
coatings is currently in the CEE and Russia and
other countries in the former Soviet Union.
In Europe only 15 percent of wood coatings

opportunities.

demand was in Central and Eastern Europe in

2000. But by 2015 over 25 percent wood coatings sales should be in CEE, according to gures
presented to a recent coatings meeting in
Dublin, Ireland, by Orr & Boss Inc, a consultancy from Clinton Township, Mich., U.S.
A lot of this additional demand in the CEE
region will come from continued sturdy growth
in its construction sector, while construction activity in Western Europe is forecast by Orr &
Boss to be among the lowest in the world.
In the rst half of this year there was a 25 percent increase in the numbers of new homes completed in Poland, according to PMR Consulting, a
Polish-based market research organisation. The
quantity of apartments offered by property developers in the countrys major urban centers is now
higher than in 2007-08 before the nancial crisis.
Construction activity has also been busy in
urban Russia, particularly at the higher end of
the market, which has a big demand for wood
coatings. PMR reports that around 70 percent
of all newly built residential houses in Moscow
are now in the business-class category.
Wood coatings demand in Eastern Europe
has also been boosted by the region becoming a
center for furniture production. A lot of manufacture of furniture and other wooden products
has shifted from Western to Eastern Europe because of low production and raw material costs.
A large proportion of Europes plentiful supplies of wood are in its eastern region. There are
1.02 billion hectares of forest in Europe, around
25 percent of the world total and considerably
more than its share of the total global land mass.
Wood coatings businesses with advanced
technologies, efcient customer services and geographically located to have easy access to Eastern Europe are benetting considerably from its
growth in demand. This is particularly the case
with SMEs in Germany and Austria.
However wood coatings producers are also
gaining from the powerful inuence of fashion
and style on wood products across the whole of
Europe. At present a need for people to show individuality is being combined with a liking for
nature and purity.
Individuality and authenticity are in demand, said Jasmin Rutpprechter, a marketing

executive at Adler Lacke, Schwaz, Austria, a specialist in wood

coatings. Creativity knows no limits when it comes to pieces
of furniture.
A current trend is for wood in furniture and other parts of
the home to be untreated, which requires special effects from
wood coatings and stains. There is also a preference for
coarsely textured surfaces equivalent to a
rough sawn look, which need specific
types of lacquer.
This natural style contrasts with a desire
for modernist wood products with clear
lines and smooth surfaces and also for furniture of classical design with a polished
appearance.
The variety of vogues in the wood products market offers great scope among wood
coatings producers for customization backed
by close cooperation with wood workshops
and professional painters.
The requirement for customization is a
major reason why wood coatings businesses
in Europe are able to sell their products at
premium prices. Environmental regulations,
which limit emissions of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) and have triggered a
shift to more costly waterborne coatings,
have also been a factor behind higher prices.
Orr & Boss says that even in 2000 there
was a 15 percent price premium on wood
coatings in Europe compared with the global
average. By 2015 this will have risen to a 40
percent premium, according to the rm.
Adler Lacke reported 67 million ($87
million) in sales in 2006 on an output of
15,000 tons, most of it wood coatings. Last
year it recorded revenue of 83 million, 20
percent higher than ve years previously but
October 2012

on an output of 15,500 tons or only three percent more.

One of the fastest growing wood coatings specialists is Renner Italia, Bologna, which was set up by its Brazilian owners Renner S.A. in 2004 when sales amounted to 2.5 million. Last year
its revenue totalled 62 million from a volume of 17,000 tons.
3-H Lacke, Hiddenhausen, Germany, now part of the German Remmers Group, last year went through a revival after expansions in distribution structure and upgrading of production
processes with an emphasis on high quality products in its mainly
wood coating portfolio.
The turn-around in 2011 showed us that our efforts to optimize sequences and processes are paying off, said 3-Hs managing partner Frank Sieverding, while stressing the advantages
of the companys proximity to customers.
Hesse-Lignal, Hamm, Germany, another SME wood coatings
producer, has not only been more active in Eastern Europe but
also areas of Western Europe.
Its UK subsidiary, Hesse-Lignal UK, has been expanding rapidly through a network of dealers. It is expecting to become one
of the major players in the UK market.
The durability of the growth rates of SMEs in wood coatings
will, however, be tested by the predicted slow growth in national GDPs across most of Europe, even in CEE, over the next
few years. CW

New Differentiated Products

Might Be Disruptive As Well
A discussion with the
developers of two gamechanging technologies.
by Phil Phillips, PhD
Contributing Editor
phillips@chemarkconsulting.net
n the coatings, paints, adhesives,
sealants, plastics and specialty chemicals industries, Chemark often comes
across new product claims that appear to
be to-good-to-be-true. They usually are.
However, about ve to 10 percent of
the cases the claims are not only accurate
but they are exciting and can be potential
game-changers in the market segment
arenas targeted. Such is the case with BenTech of Southern Pines, N.C., and Luminescent Paint Technologies (LPT) located
in Chicago, Ill.
Chemark sat down with the two company principles to discuss their technologies and marketing approach.
We asked LPTs president and owner,
Dave Postma, a few questions about
their LPT-GLO product.

Q&A with Dave Postma,

president and owner,
Luminescent Paint
Technologies
Chemark: What is LPT-GLO and what
does it do?
Dave Postma: LPT-GLO is a single component urethane glow-paint that can
endure long-term weathering and vehicle
abuse loadings. It is a performance safety
coating. The product comes in a wide
array of UV stable daytime colors. It has a
visible color in the day and a six to 10
hour glowing color in the dark. The paint,
color and glow will last for years. It is a
28 | Coatings World

product that will create limitless markets.

When the lights go out LPT-GLO goes on.
Chemark: You invented LPT-GLO but
why did you feel compelled to bring it to
market?
Postma: I developed the product when I
was asked to apply a luminescent product
on stairwells. This product had day colors
that faded within a few months of applications, as well as the paint itself immediately started to deteriorate. Within one
season the color had faded to almost
white, and more than half the applicationat an astounding 22 mils which
took almost one month to curewas
wearing or just plain falling off.
The primer was still there and in great
shape. I addressed this massive failure
with the company that made the luminescent paint. I told them that the paint
needed to be changed from an arts and
crafts resin system to another system to
survive the harsh conditions. After three
months the company told me it couldnt
be done. So I decided to do it myself. I
went immediately to a urethane resin system for its versatility of applications, its
superior durability, exibility, versatility
and fast cure time. In this new backbone
system, we found a greater footprint
bandwidth of markets and applications
not possible before.
Chemark: So the features that exponentially broadened the use footprint of luminescent coatings are what?
Postma: LTP-GLO has and maintains day
colors without UV fading; it withstands
severe weathering and heavy loading
abuse; and, with the proper primer can be
painted on virtually any surface. It has
quick dry and cure times. No other luminescent coatings do this today.
Chemark: What are some of the applications you see LTP-GLO economically tting?
Postma: LTP-GLO creates new markets
that were not possible before its creation.
www.coatingsworld.com

For example, we see many market applications. Here are several for consideration:
Airport
runways;
marine
(ships/barges); mining (safety markings);
DOT striping/signage; heavy equipment;
emergency exits/stairwells; and safety
markings of any kind.
Chemark: How are you marketing LTPGLO currently?
Postma: LPT-GLO is initially being marketed through licensees in the coatings industry. Luminescent Paint Technologies
(LPT) is an invention-oriented technical
company. We do not claim to be marketers or even connected to the marketplace in a knowledgeable way. There are
coatings companies in place who know
how to successfully move LPT-GLO into
the various niche markets.
Chemark: How can interested potential licensee parties get in touch with you to discuss LTP-GLO further?
Postma: LPT can be contacted by calling
1-866-611-4569 (GLOW) or sending an
e-mail to postmapainting@yahoo.com.
Chemark also asked BenTechs chief executive ofcer, Matt Dyer, a few questions
about their Preservor product line.

Q&A with Matt Dyer, CEO,

BenTech
Chemark: What is Preservor and what
does it do?
Matt Dyer: Preservor is our proprietary liquid product line that is highly effective at
inhibiting mold, odor and rust in a variety
of business sectors. Preservor is also effective at enhancing water removal from many
systems. The active ingredient is potassium
sorbate, a very safe and effective preservative which has been used extensively in the
food industry for almost a century. The
problem with potassium sorbate is it breaks
down and loses its effectiveness when it
comes in contact with moisture. BenTechs

unique chemistry stabilizes the sorbate in

liquid preventing its degradation. This benet enables us to deliver enhanced product
preservation in-formula or when topically
sprayed. The enhanced product preservation means using less active ingredients,
which results in cost savings to our customers. Thats why we say, Think of
Preservor as sorbate on steroids.
Chemark: Why did BenTech feel compelled to bring Preservor to the coatings
market?
Dyer: To date, all Preservor sales have
been generated by direct application to
substrates leading to success in the food,
animal feed and construction sectors.
Some of our bakery and fruit and vegetable contacts asked if we could achieve
similar results by applying Preservor to
packaging paper or film to provide similar preservation. Initial testing looks
very promising.
Chemark: What are the main features that
set Preservor apart from its competition?
Dyer: There arent many products that
have the broad benets of Preservor. Using
it as an additive to a paint or coating, you
could achieve mold inhibition, corrosion
resistance, preservation and faster drying
all with one product. And, by the way, its
environmentally friendly.
Chemark: You mentioned rust inhibition
as well. What applications t in this market today?
Dyer: We have a separate patent for rust
and corrosion. Based on testing to date,
we could use Preservor as a green ash
rust inhibitor. One of our more interesting
ideas was to mix Preservor with concrete
instead of water to see if we could prevent
corrosion of the rebar. More work needs
to be done but the rebar showed signicant improvement.
Chemark: Are there other applications for
this potential workhorse?
Dyer: You mentioned potential gamechangers and I believe Preservor may t
this denition. Ive heard it said that many
of our greatest discoveries come by accident. During a pet food processing trial, we
observed that adding Preservor in formula
October 2012

resulted in faster drying of the kibble. The

faster drying resulted in higher throughputbetter absorption of capital costsas
well as a 30 percent decrease in energy
usage. This revelation was news to us and
led us to testing different grains and pulp
and paper at several universities with similar results. We now have a patent pending
on the improved dewatering technology.
Last May, we completed a molecular modeling project at North Carolina State University where we were able to conrm the
effect and understand the mechanism.
Were now trying to optimize our formulation but, needless to say, were very excited.
As an additive, preliminary bench-top testing shows paints and coatings will dry
faster. If dewatering is part of the manufacturing process, we may save energy costs
and increase throughput.
Chemark: How are you going to market
with Preservor?
Dyer: BenTech is primarily a research and

development company. Our strategy to

date has been to partner with companies
who have the expertise, infrastructure and
relationships in place to successfully commercialize our technology and were looking for the same t in the coatings market.
Were also exible as to the structure of
any partnership.
Chemark: How can interested parties get
in touch with you?
Dyer: You may call BenTech at 910-974-4466

When There Is No Way To Stop Your Trade

Secrets From . . . Literally . . . Walking Out The Door
By Steve McDaniel, JD, PhD
Technology Litigators
ne of your highest level managers, one with complete access
to all your inside information
and trade secrets, quits and immediately
heads over to your direct competitor. He
does not have a covenant-not-tocompete, and maybe not even a binding
non-disclosure agreement (shame, shame,
shame) that you can try and wag over his
head. Worse yet, some of the competitive
nuggets rattling around in this guys head
include strategic planning specically
aimed at wresting larger market share
away from your competitor/his new employer. Some of this strategic planning includes a launch of new formulations you
have innovated that will cure the problems that your sales force routinely hears
being leveled by customers at the other
paint company. While he hasnt spilled the
beans yet as far as you know, and youve
admonished him not to do so, a duty he
swore to uphold, you still have very grave
concerns that Mr. Im-Outta-Here cannot
but help but disclose your trade secrets.
Talk about having a bad day in the Csuiteall those golf games, talking
through all the strategies you both
planned to try, and you never had a clue
he was job shopping! It doesnt get much
worse than this if youre a paint and coatings company and you rely heavily on the
trade secret assets surrounding your formulations and marketing program. But, as
we enjoy self-inicted ogging, lets focus
on this worst-case-scenario because, in its
severity, it highlights the critical areas of
concern when you conduct professional
strength trade secret audits.
As discussed in prior articles, it is arguable that you should have tried to get a
legally enforceable covenant-not-tocompete out of this employee the day he

30 | Coatings World

signed on. Enforceable covenants are approached state-by-state, and must be tailored to specic facts surrounding the
employment. You probably are not going
to be successful in preventing your chief
polymer chemist from becoming a eld
salesman for your competitor, no matter
how much better a salesman he might be
due to his in-depth knowledge of the resin
systems. And, it goes without saying that
this covenant should be paired with a
non-disclosure agreement whereby each
key employee agrees not to disclose trade
secret information he acquired during his
employment with you. The departing employee and his new employer should be
made aware that you are watching, and if
your trade secret information is used, you
will hold them liable. There are semi-courteous ways to do this, such as during the
requisite exit interview and a follow up
letter copying the new employer. All of
this should have been routinely re-enforced by periodic training of key employees, including the guy who is just
about to take a hike, about how to prevent and detect trade secret misappropriation on the philosophy that he cant say
we never told him so.
Still what are you going to do? Well,
there is a ray of hope, albeit a very slim one.
And it is one that you may nd peeking out
of the paper fortress you have hopefully
created to protect your trade secret assets
during your routine auditing processes.
But, rst, some inclement weather
news. If you reside in the sunshine states
of California or Florida, that little ray of
hope has been virtually rained out. In
Massachusetts, North Carolina, and New
York, you have a slightly better chance of
sunshine in certain circumstances. Texas
and a handful of other states have yet to
give us a clear forecast, so take an umbrella. One thing is for certain. Sorting
these jurisdictional issues out BEFORE
you hire key personnel is a smart move.
Because it will likely immediately rewww.coatingsworld.com

quire a temporary injunction, followed by

more permanent injunctions, this slim
ray of hope is based in a very large part
on how well you have established your
trade secret protection program. You will
use this iron-clad program to show the
court that the departing employees new
gig will inevitably lead him to rely on your
well-protected and valuable trade secretsergo it being called the Inevitable
Disclosure Doctrine of trade secret law.
The court is going to have to weigh your
legitimate rights to protect your trade secrets against the employees rights to get a
job that uses the skills and knowledge he
has legally acquired in working for you.
Dicey. And, the Court will gladly toss the
case out if there is any signicant chink in
your trade secret protection armor.
But, lets assume that you have conducted a professional-strength trade secret
audit, that you are armed for bear, and that
you are not entirely foreclosed from seeking injunctive relief, i.e., your case arises
outside California and/or Florida. Can you
prevent this guy from gutting your trade secret assets? Maybe. Here are some of the
factors that are typically taken into account.
As you read down through them, think
back on your own trade secret protection

at hand to quickly and convincingly provide such evidence to a court?

What is the degree of competition
between you and his new employer?
How much similarity is there between the two jobs?
Was the departing employee forthcoming or cagey about the new position and employer?
Are you able to point with specicity
to the trade secrets of concern?
Has there already been use of the
trade secrets by your company, or are
they yet to be used to your commercial advantage?
Were there any contracts between
you and the departing employee that
gave rise to obligations of condence
or obligations not to compete?
Does the new employer have a clearcut policy against the use of others
trade secrets?
Is it going to be possible to sanitize
the new position by preventing improper use of your trade secrets?
There are a couple of other issues to
consider here, which are directly drawn
from the efciency of your trade secret
program.
One of these is the rather murky distinction between inevitable disclosure
and probable disclosure. While the distinction probably makes you roll your
eyes at the attorney word-smithing that
goes on, there is a very real difference in
the proof required. Probable disclosure
need only be supported with enough evidence and weight of evidence to establish
a presumption, while inevitable disclosure
is only supportable by a nding that the
defendant has the condential information and that he will not be able to avoid
using it to unfairly compete against you.
Assume the worst in your preparations for
suing a departing key employee and attempt to have on hand evidence sufcient
to meet the higher standard of the two.
Another issue that commonly arises is
the existence of a non-compete agreement
or non-compete clause within an employment agreement. The biggest distinction
between a case for breach of a non-compete agreement and one that is based upon

state-by-state, and must be tailored to
specific facts surrounding the employment. You probably are not going to be
successful in preventing your chief polymer chemist from becoming a field salesman for your competitor, no matter how
much better a salesman he might be due
to his in-depth knowledge of the resin systems. And, it goes without saying that this
covenant should be paired with a non-disclosure agreement whereby each key employee agrees not to disclose trade secret
information he acquired during his employment with you. The departing employee and his new employer should be
made aware that you are watching, and if
your trade secret information is used, you
will hold them liable.
inevitable disclosure is in the enforcement
that is available to you. If you are successful in convincing a court that the defendant will inevitably disclose your trade

The
Auto
Refinish
Market
The auto refinish market remains flat in North America, but improving standards of living
in developing countries are leading to an increase in cars in Asia and South America.
by Kerry Pianoforte, Associate Editor
he auto renish market continues to perform sluggishly
in mature markets like North America. However, growing
afuence and an increase in car ownership in emerging
regions, has given the auto renish market a much-needed boost.
The market is at to declining in North America while growing in developing regions like Asia and South America, said Victoria Manea, market development manager, dispersions and
pigments, North America, BASF. In these latter regions, the
higher consumer spending power and standards of living have
led to an increase in car ownership which, combined with poor
quality roads and frequent trafc accidents, are causing a boost
in the renish market.
Ever since the nancial crisis of 2008, weve been confronted
with a challenging market for our business and we expect it to
remain pretty at for the foreseeable future, said Kerstin Stranimaier, marketing director, AkzoNobel. When we look at individual markets, there are however plenty of opportunities. No
one is going to complain about safer cars and fewer accidents,
but those positive developments do of course affect our business,
especially in our more established markets like Western Europe

and North America. Still, China, even with somewhat slower

growth in the last six months or so, remains a rapidly growing
market, India is showing great promise, South America is growing, and we also see strong growth in Eastern Europe.
Strainimaier reported that there has been huge growth in the
mid-market billions of people emerging from poverty and
seeking to join the middle class. Thats where most of the
growth in the developing world is coming from, and that is going
to remain a fact of life for the next 30 or 40 years, she added.
We estimate that 3 to 4 billion people will become active consumers over that period of time, and so weve got to tailor our
products to meet the demands of that huge emerging market.
Many of our own products are aimed more at the higher end, so
for us, a challenge is to deliver the kind of quality and performance which has been our strength, but at a price that is affordable to these new consumers.
According to David Brunori, executive vice president and general manager at Matrix System Automotive Finishes, the economy
and distribution consolidation continue to drive declining to at
markets in the NAFTA and EU regions. However, these conditions have strengthened the position for value paint lines, he
added. A growing demand for Tier 2 paint lines will continue to
be a factor in the NAFTA and EU regions for years to come and

ROW interest continues to grow as well. Matrix System Automotive Finishes has been the leader in Tier 2 paint lines for decades.
Consolidation has been a talking point for many years, however the last two years have seen the most activity, said Brunori.
Several major and many smaller acquisitions have changed the
dynamics of the industry at the street level and we anticipate a
lot more consolidation at the jobber level throughout this year.
The organizations reputation and relationships will become vital
as we move forward. Bottom line is people want to do business
with people they trust.
Sustainability, low VOC and other environmental issues will
continue to be important issues for auto renish manufacturers.
Market trends observed are toward water-based technology
for basecoats and low VOC in general, said Manea. Most important market needs are for sustainable technologies and
processes that enable increased productivity: quick to apply,
clean sustainable and easy to apply.
I dont think its possible to overestimate the importance of
waterborne technologies, said Strainimaier. A few years ago,
there were doubters, but weve achieved critical mass now, and
the whole industry in Europe and North America is changing
over. We are continuously improving our waterborne systems

most recently with a new generation that you see in our upgraded Sikkens Autowave products.
Its obvious that sustainability will continue to be a priority
in the marketplace, added Strainimaier. Customers want improved health and safety; they want to create more pride, satisfaction and loyalty; they want to use less energy and carbon, less
water and create less waste; and they want smart facility planning and design. Because by doing so they will grow sales and
improve their prot margins. And were there to help them
achieve these goals. With our sustainable value proposition we
help to future-proof our customers businesses body shops
and repair specialists. We nd, by the way, that a lot of work
providers insurance companies and eet owners, for example
share our values.
Regulatory topics will continue to gain momentum in many
parts of the U.S., according to Brunori. The VOC changes in
Canada, the addition of several air quality districts in California, and activities around Lake Michigan (LADCO) and the
Northeastern region (OTC) indicate the commitment to reducing
VOC emissions, he said. There are several techniques to comply with the lower basecoat VOC limits either water-based or
solvent-based. Matrix System offers both technologies; Aqualu-

PPG opens color matching laboratory

PPG Automotive Refinish has opened an automated, technologically advanced, color matching laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio. A
formal ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by PPG management and employees took place September 14, 2012. The new laboratory is expected to be fully operational this month.
A new level of precision and efficiency has been developed for the
Refinish Color Matching Laboratory the company said. This computer-controlled, high-tech facility marks a significant advancement in the science and art of automotive refinish color matching.
The Refinish Color Matching Laboratory addresses a major challenge the automotive refinish business faces. The patent-pending
system incorporates state-of-the-art equipment and proprietary computer software to quickly produce more formulation measurements,
allowing PPG to provide precise variant formulas with operational efficiency, said John Outcalt, PPG vice president, global refinish. The
facility addresses a major challenge the automotive refinish business
faces: the need for collision centers to accurately match the growing
number of domestic and import OEM exterior, bumper, accent and
underhood colors as well as the increasing number of variations to PPG recently celebrated the opening of its new automated

mulation, the reality is the actual vehicle finish color may differ from
plant to plant for any number of reasons. Consequently color variants are always needed.
PPG's laboratory is equipped to produce accurate color formulations through improved processes and procedures it said.
Using electronic and scientific methods made possible through state-of-the-art equipment and proprietary computer software
programs, the patent-pending automated system is capable of running continuously to produce more color formulations, allowing PPG to provide precise color formulas with operational efficiency. The result: quickly obtaining the right variant and formula the first time. The laboratory's capability also allows PPG to expand its data collection practices, better analyze automotive
pigments and explore applicable color formulation opportunities as they occur.

tion waterborne or MPB-LV solventborne basecoats. Our development chemists are working on new hybrid technologies to ensure compliance for many years to come.
Our chemists are diligently working on advanced crosslinking platforms for the future topcoats and undercoats, said
Brunori. Advancements in pigment dispersion technologies and
waterborne resin platforms are always of interest to our formulators. The goal is to continue to bring value and technological
advancements at the same time to our customers. This theme resonates throughout our organization.
While meeting environmental regulations is certainly one of
the most important issues, meeting customers needs at a reasonable price is equally important.
Lower/unstable demand in certain regions of the world has
made customers more cautious with respect to inventory management (destocking), said Manea.BASF sees this as an opportunity
to engage our customers to understand the specic demands that
they are facing and construct programs to assist them.
According to Brunori, the key issue for many renish customers is price point and quality. Value paints are the fastest
growing market segments that our industry has ever seen, he
added. Customers are demanding a lower price alternative without sacricing color match or performance. There are more Tier
2 paint companies in our industry than ever before; with more
entering the U.S. market from around the world each year. Economic pressures and quality equal to the major paint manufacturers have accelerated the consumption of these products.
Matrix System has provided the industry great products at a
value price for many years. Matrix System employees remain
well-grounded to our roots and sensitive to the conditions our
customers are operating in. Our business model satises the market demand more today than it did 30 years ago.
When it comes to auto renish, color matching is probably
the biggest priority.
In the end, our customers care about one thing above all
delivering a perfect repair to their customers, said Strainimaier.
The quality of the products and the efciency of the processes
are absolutely key for them, but the number one priority is to
get the color right color excellence, if you will. We are constantly investing in the technologies and services to make certain
they can get it right, and get it right the rst time, every time.
Thats about databases of colors, and about software and tools.
We think the future is with 100% digital systems for color recognition and color formulation. We have those capabilities now, in
our Sikkens and Lesonal systems, and weve got some key customers who have switched over from the traditional system using
color documentation in the form of chips and visual matching to
fully digital, with our AM3 spectrophotometer and our color
management software.
Apart from that, AkzoNobel is doing a lot to help its customers with more efcient processes, so that their throughput is
higher which translates to higher protability. We do it with
support and training, with a real emphasis on partnership, said
Strainimaier. Customers also are looking at ways to reduce
waste and cut energy consumption, and we are trying to respond
38 | Coatings World

to those concerns with improvements in products faster drying,

and at lower temperatures.
AkzoNobel through its Acoat selected program was an early
innovator in the area of educational programs related to the business aspects of running a protable collision repair center. For
approximately thirty years we have provided collision repair centers throughout the world insights about the industry, their respective markets as well as information related to techniques,
tools and trends, said Strainimaier. Today, we continue that
practice with concepts such as Process Centered Environments
(PCE) which demonstrates how business productivity along with
improved quality and protability can be enhanced through the
introduction of sustainable processes.

New Products
Over the last four years, AkzoNobel has had a partnership with
the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 racing team, and
some of the spinoffs from that cooperation are now nding their
way into its products. For example, weve got a new UV-curable
ller that were now introducing as Sikkens click&go UV Surfacer, said Strainimaier. Its packaged in an innovative unit that
you can effortlessly click on to your spray gun, and it cures in 5
minutes when exposed to UV-A light. So that delivers speed, convenience, performance, low energy consumption quite a lot of
performance in one new product.
Another spinoff from AkzoNobel is Autoclear Matt 12, a
two-pack matting nish consisting of low gloss and semi-gloss
components for application over all basecoats. The customer
can control the level of gloss in the product by altering the mix
of the two components, Strainimairer added. Both of those
products are examples of the Creating Together theme weve
featured in our Sikkens global marketing campaign working
with our customers and our partners to develop innovative products and solutions.
AkzoNobel also just broke ground in Changzhou, China for
a new manufacturing site, along with ofce, research, warehousing and support facilities. Its one of the biggest investments
weve ever made, and it will add 25 million liters of production
capacity straight away, with the potential to triple that as the
market grows, said Strainimaier. Thats the real proof of our
commitment to the Chinese market. If it all goes according to
plan, it will be ready in 2014.
Matrix System was the rst Tier 2 paint company to offer the
renish market an alternative to waterborne basecoats by launching MSB-LV Low VOC solvent basecoat. Other paint companies
scrambled to add this alternative basecoat to their portfolio, which
have some deciencies which included; decreased opacity, difcult
to apply, reduction of alternates/variant formulas and minimal use
of Xirillic pigments for late model vehicles, said Brunori. Matrix
System solved all of these issues by launching our MPB-LV Coast
to Coast Premium Low VOC Basecoat into the market. MPB-LV
is a state-of-the-art technology that offers exceptional performance and consistent results similar to that of a national rule

technical staff by 50% over
the last year. It is important
that our staff, both eld

said Brunori. In the end, it is
about satisfying the end user and what better way to understand
what the market is expecting than building relationships at the
most important level, the shop. We are continually searching for
ways to bring better performing, cost-effective products that will
make our customers more successful and protable.

PPG has a number of new products for the auto renish market. PPGs new ultra fast-drying 2.1 VOC compliant clearcoat,
such as Envirobase High Performance EC800, is designed to improve repair performance in diverse repair environments, said
Gareth Hughes, director of technology and global platform marketing, PPG Automotive Renish. This new clear can be air

years ago. One obvious benet of air dry capability is its ability
to reduce the workload on the baking booth, while saving on the
energy costs to operate it.
We recently launched PET (polyethylene terephthalate)

incorporates recycled plastic bottles into our resin systems is part
of PPGs drive to develop environmentally-sustainable products
offering signicant advantages over existing technology.
Over the past 10 years, PPG has been signicantly expanding
its global renish presence, both from within and through acquisitions. Max Meyer, Orica, ICI Autocolor, Protec and Bonny

B&W Pigments

Black and White

Pigments Market
Carbon black and titanium dioxide pigments manufacturers share their latest offerings.
by Kerry Pianoforte, Associate Editor
lack and white pigments are key components of many
coatings formulations. Over the past few years, black and
white pigments makers have seen their fair share of down
time, but manufacturers Coatings World spoke with reported
some small gains.
Carbon black pigments are used in formulations to help absorb UV light and impart durability to a coating. They are used
in a wide variety of applications including automotive, decorative and industrial coatings.
Carbon blacks are used for many reasons in coatings, said
Josh Prenetal global segment manager for coatings at Cabot Corp.
The most common use is for pigmentation, which can be split
into masstone and tinting. In masstone applications, the end product is a jet black coating. Black automotive basecoats are a good
example here. For all other non-black applications, carbon black
is used as a tinting aid. Even white paints often have a very, very
small amount of carbon black in them to reduce the brightness.
Carbon black is also added to coatings to make them more
conductive, said Preneta. In plastic primers applied to automotive bumpers, the function of the carbon black is to make the
coating slightly conductive, so that subsequent layers of coating
can be deposited via electrodeposition. Carbon black also helps
with the dissipation of static in the concrete oor coatings applied to the oors of electronics fabrication facilities. Carbon
black is also used for its inherent opacity. It is added to the backside of the coverglass in touch-screen devices to black light. Inside the display, it prevents light from bleeding from one pixel
to the next, effectively enabling high resolution displays.
Demand for carbon black pigments has been at for the past
year with some slight gains expected.
Small gains or returning business has kept our business
slightly better than 2011, said John Erbeck, product line manager, inkjet products, energy curable dispersions, carbon black dispersions at Emerald Materials. We believe this trend will continue
into 2013. Offering high quality products to the market is key to
our success. We offer highly dispersed products that allow our customers the formulating latitudes needed to be competitive.
According to Erbeck, because use of carbon black pigments in
coatings is a relatively small segment, there are availability and

40 | Coatings World

supply issues. The coatings and graphic arts markets remain a

minor user when compared to rubbers markets and this constricts the availability of carbon to our markets and in some cases
allocations of supply, Erbeck said. Emerald Performance Materials has been well situated with our carbon supply and have
not seen any major issues in our supply due to our planning and
forward thinking procurement teams working hand in had with
our sales group. The major markets for Emerald Performance
Materials remain the coatings and graphic arts industries.
Raw material prices are also another key issue for carbon black
manufacturers.Changes in oil prices have been a fact of life, said
Erbeck. In this highly competitive carbon dispersions product line,
we must nd ways to recover the cost increases. To what extent we
can offset increases through productivity improvements, raw material substitution and end-performance enhancements, that is always a given. Would these potentially move the need for us and
our customers? We continually dialogue with our customers regarding expected changes in the market and continuing to provide
them high quality products to meet their needs.
Titanium dioxide is used as a safe, non-toxic ingredient in paints,
coatings, plastics and paper and is a very efcient way of providing

technology with a China-based company
PPG Industries has signed a memorandum of understanding with
Henan Billions Chemicals Co., Ltd. by which PPG will license certain
chloride-based technologies to Billions for use at Billions' titanium dioxide (TiO2) refinement facilities in China. In addition, PPG has signed a
long-term purchase agreement for titanium dioxide with Billions. PPG
intends to use the chloride-based TiO2 manufactured by Billions for
various end-use applications, including paints and other coatings. The
TiO2 also would be available for sale to third parties. PPG previously
manufactured titanium dioxide using the chloride process at its chemicals facility in Natrium, W. Va., and sold titanium dioxide pigment for
coatings and other end-use applications. Titanium dioxide is a raw
material widely used in the paint and coatings industry as a pigment
to provide hiding, durability and whiteness characteristics.

opacity and UV protection. Titanium dioxide absorbs UV radiation, thereby protecting and extending a products lifetime. It delivers efcient whiteness and brightness for excellent hiding power,
said BC Chong, president of DuPont Titanium Technologies.
Like carbon black, demand for titanium dioxide was down
this year. The titanium dioxide market demand is down this
year, but we expect a recovery in 2013 and we remain condent
in our titanium dioxide outlook for the longer term, said Chong.
Titanium dioxide demand is expected to grow with GDP and
DuPont, the most innovative titanium dioxide company, will
benet from this growth. In addition, our signicant new capacity expansion will allow us to grow with our customers.
According to Frank Lavieri, executive vice president and general manager at Lansco Colors, the demand for white pigments
has grown substantially over the last year such that it has outstripped supply for a time. Supply and demand has been more
balanced now but during the previous year Lansco Colors sales
of white pigments increased substantially, he said. We are nding more and more customers are being careful to use the best
value titanium dioxide for each application, whereas in the past
they may have been more inclined to use only one higher performance grade. The best value grade is the one which meets all
of the requirements for the application at the lowest cost and,
importantly, is not over engineered.
Both carbon black and white pigment manufacturers have
launched a number of new products. For the coatings market
Emerald Hitlon Davis offers zero VOC, formaldehyde-free, APEfree Verdis dispersion products.
This is a full line of colorants including carbon black dispersion that offers high quality colors for in-plant tinting, said
Erbeck. Emerald also offers a new line energy cure colorants,
called Lucida Colors. Lucida Colors ECF is a full line of high
performance pigment and trans-oxide color products to meet the
needs in the emerging energy cure coatings market. Emerald
Hilton Davis also offers a wide range of specialty water-based
black dispersions.
Cabot recently launched Emperor 1800, a high color carbon
black designed for ease of dispersion in water-based systems.
The product is designed to be used in automotive and other
high-end applications, said Preneta. Cabot also has a complete
line of resistive carbon blacks use in display applications, the
TPK series of carbon blacks. These materials enable higher resolution displays and next generation touch panel architectures.
Cabot also has a number of products coming later in 2012.
DuPont Titanium Technologies has been delivering Ti-Pure
products to the coatings industry for more than 80 years.
Our offering developments begins with the needs of the
worlds leading coatings customers, said Chong. Our research
in titanium dioxide is focused on delivering leading opacity solutions and maximizing our customers cost efciency to ensure
performance and competitiveness in the markets they serve.
DuPont Titanium Technologies has also announced a global expansion that will add 350,000 metric tons of capacity at its Altamira, Mexico site and several other site of its sites around the
world. The new line at the Altamire site is scheduled for compleOctober 2012

tion by 2015, added Chong. This expansion effort is an integral

piece of the business global strategy to help customers grow.
German-based TiO2 producer Sachtleben Chemie recently
took over crenox, another German TiO2 producer. It was placed
in administration three years ago when Tronox, its U.S.-based
parent, led for Chapter 11bankruptcy protection.
Sachtleben, a joint venture between Rockwood Holdings
based in the U.S. and Kemira of Finland, is primarily a speciality TiO2 producer with around 240,000 metric tons of annual
capacity at two plants in Duisburg, Germany, and Pori, Finland.
crenox has a 107,000 tons a year plant at Krefeld so its acquisition will considerably strengthen Sachtlebens position in the European TiO2 market, in which the other main players are
DuPont, Cristal, Huntsman, and Kronos.
The acquisition could result in a further decrease in production capacity available for commodity-priced TiO2 for coatings
at a time when supply has not been keeping up with demand.
Consequently prices for the pigment have risen by around 50
percent since early last year with analysts predicting further rises
in the second half of 2012.
TiO2 capacity in Europe has been under pressure since a steep
drop in demand in the aftermath of the nancial crisis in 2008
led to the closure of some uneconomic plants in the region. Producers of the pigment have reported that they have been sold out
over the last two years. CW

Investments In China

Continue To Expand
As the paint, coatings, adhesives and sealants industries continue to grow in China so too
does the amount of investments being made there by manufacturers. Pictured above,
Henkel recently started construction for its 150,000 square-meter adhesives factory in
Shanghai Chemical Industry Park. The new facility will be the main adhesives manufacturing base in China and the Asia-Pacific region.
by Tim Wright, Editor
he paint and coatings industry has put a tremendous emphasis on the Chinese market where the largest international paint manufacturers all have built major operations
and continue to invest there.
Chinese paints and coatings consumption reached just over
11 million tons in 2011. More than one-third of the market was
occupied by architectural coatings. This dynamic market has
continued its growth trajectory despite the global economic recession by focusing on domestic market demand in the construction, automotive, and home appliances and consumer
electronics sectors.
Hosting key events, such as the Beijing Olympic Games in
2008, Shanghai World Expo in 2010 and Guangzhou Asian
Games in 2010, China has stimulated huge amounts of invest-

ment in the countrys infrastructure. China has continued to invest in infrastructure development, including new bridges, landmark city buildings, alternative energy facilities, nuclear
generation plants, schools, and hospitals.
These factors have all contributed to double-digit growth in
the Chinese coatings market year every year since 2002, with the
exception of 2008, according to IRLs report, A Prole of the
Chinese Paint Industry. The report updates IRLs previous study
released in 2009 and includes the latest industry trends and upto-date statistics.
The report says over the next ve years market growth is expected to remain at a level of around 10 percent per year, with the
fastest growth being achieved in road marking paints, coatings for
plastics, automotive renishes and protective coatings. These
booming sectors will compensate for considerably slower growth
in automotive OEM coatings and wood coatings said the report.
Per capita paint consumption remains relatively low in China

at approximately 7.2 kg, indicating that there is still considerable potential for the market to grow further and penetrate into
the more underdeveloped regions of China.
The Chinese coatings industry continues to be highly fragmented, with as many as 20,000 manufacturers active in the
market, albeit on a very small scale for many. Future consolidation is highly likely as smaller players get pushed out through
environmental pressures and demand for more high quality
products from the end-users.
The key opportunities for future growth in the market will arise
from factors such as: the 18th Congress of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) that was held in October 2012 and there will be pressure on the new leadership team to introduce measures to stimulate
the economy after many government incentives were pulled in
2011; the Chinese governments affordable housing program plans
to build 36 million new affordable dwellings over the next ve
years; huge regional disparities remain in China, with rural areas
offering opportunity for infrastructural development and as yet untapped consumer demand; rising car ownership, poor road conditions and a very low scrappage rate will all boost demand for
automotive renishes; the Chinese end-user industries will be looking for coatings offering environmental benets and safety features
(like lead-free, VOC-free, formaldehyde-free etc.), plus more functionality, in order to meet stricter standards (particularly for products destined for export) and serve the needs of discerning
consumers (especially the younger generations); and offshore engineering schemes and infrastructure development will bolster sales
of marine and protective coatings.

and the site is projected to be operational in early 2014.
This investment builds on last years acquisition of Prime Automotive and is all about meeting rapidly increasing customer demand, said Leif Darner, AkzoNobels executive committee
member responsible for performance coatings. We are also seizing
an ideal opportunity to further strengthen our leadership position.
The automotive and aerospace market in China is forecast
to further increase steeply in the coming years and this investment will allow us to capture our share of this growth, said Jim
Rees, managing director of AkzoNobels automotive and aerospace coatings business. Changzhou is the ideal location for this
facility as there is a good infrastructure already in place and it is
ideally situated in the coatings center of China, with close access
to many of our customers.
AkzoNobel currently employs around 6,700 people in China,
with revenue for 2010 totaling 1.3 billion, with a majority of the
revenue generated from local demand. The new site in Changzhou
will be the companys 29th manufacturing location in China.

Chinas Automotive Coatings Market

The Road Ahead

A Look at Chinas
Automotive Coatings Market

Repair and OEM coatings markets are fundamentally very different, as one shadows automotive production and the other follows more closely with customer preferences. Luke
Johnson, senior analyst at GCiS China Strategic Research, discusses some of the findings
from their recent market study on automotive coatings.
What were some of the general findings of the
report?
Luke Johnson, senior analyst at GCiS China Strategic Research:
Although the report was released in July 2012, the base year of the
study is 2011. The market study is broken into two main segments:
OEM coatings and repair coatings. Altogether, the market is worth
about RMB18 billion (USD2.9 billion), not including exports, and
more importantly, output is about 463,000 tons. The OEM market is signicantly bigger at about 313,000 tons, whereas the repair
coatings market is about 150,000 tons, growing at about 16 percent and 17.3 percent respectively.
50 | Coatings World

Besides passenger cars, busses, trucks and engineering equipment are also signicant users of the OEM and repair coatings.
For OEMs at least, buses and trucks account for about 75,000
tons of the total OEM coating gure.
One of the most interesting points is the complications of addressing the repair coatings market. Basically, repair coatings are
difcult to dene in China. A company, really only domestic, might
sell the same paint to repair shops as they do to low speed electric
vehicle, or even bus and truck, OEMs. This makes a total market
size difcult to dene, especially when you compare numbers offered by domestic companies with those of foreign companies.

Chinas Automotive Coatings Market

Can you give us a breakdown of the different

players in the Chinese automobile coatings
market and the role of foreign and domestic
producers?
Johnson: For the Chinese automobile coatings market, foreign
firms represent about 70 percent of revenues, and a little less
by total output. Specifically, for OEM coatings, the figure is
about 83 percent by revenues and 78 percent by output, and
for repair coatings, in which we include the low-end market,
foreign companies account for only about one-third of the
total output. For repair coatings, foreign firms really only sell
high-end products; they sold between 50,000 and 60,000 tons
of repair coatings in the China market last year.

Based on your forecasts, what is the direction of

growth for automobile coatings in China?
Johnson: Well, OEM coatings tend to follow very closely with
car sales, and recently, there was a major drop in car sales in
China. Between 2009 and 2010, the industry was booming, and
passenger cars grew over 30 percent in 2009, about 25 percent

in 2010, and sales in busses and trucks were also robust. But in
2011, automobile sales plummeted, and OEM coatings were affected by this.
OEM coatings sales do not reflect car sales perfectly, however. There are adjustments in the industry, like improved application techniques of newer production lines in China, which
will slightly decrease the average amount of coating used on a
single vehicle. Cars are getting larger in China with more and
more SUVs on the road, so that can somewhat counteract this
trend as well.

What are some inhibitors, which caused some

of the lower sales growth of automobiles in
2011?
Johnson: For automobile sales, you can partly attribute this drop
to a number of government policies that were discontinued in
2010. Some of those included subsidies for purchases in rural
areas, subsidies with engines smaller than 1.6 liters, old car replacement policies changed, purchasing restrictions in major
citiesBeijing for instancecertainly felt this effect.

There are only about 60 vehicles per 1,000 people in China, so the market has a long way to grow before it is mature. When China reaches
300 cars per 1,000 people that would mean about 400 million cars on the road. If drivers buy a car about every 10 years or so thats about 40
million vehicles sold every year.

OEM paint manufacturers are essentially trying to make their products

more attractive to end-users. So what
do end-users want? End-users are car
manufacturers and they want to cut
costs. This creates several efficiency
and demand trends in the industry
that will also affect the sales of OEM
coatings. For example, competition
is too high for OEMs to pass-on excess costs to customers, and consequently, they put pressure on their
upstream suppliers to offer a cheaper
product. Therefore, some coatings
suppliers may have introduced products that reduce costs by combining
functions between coating layers, or
offering a paint that can be applied in
thinner coats.
Do you see this as a long-term trend in the
Chinese market or do you see a rebound in the
near term?
Johnson: We believe the Chinese automobile market will bounce
back but it will not return to the 30 or 40 percent gures we saw
in 2009 and 2010. Rather, it will continue to grow, but at a more
modest pace. Currently, we are expecting growth of somewhere
around eight to nine percent in 2012.

Would you say that the Chinese automobile

market is a mature market?
Johnson: As far as the market saturation, it is very far from that
point. If you look at mature automotive markets such as the U.S.
or Japan, the gures are very different. In the U.S., there are
54 | Coatings World

about 800 vehicles per 1,000 people; in Japan, the ratio is about
600 to 1,000. While in China, the absolute number of people is
much higher and the number of cars is much lower. Consequently, there are only about 60 vehicles per 1,000 people in
China, so we can see that the market has a long way to grow before it is mature. So if you could imagine when China reaches
300 cars per 1,000 peoplethats relatively modestthat would
mean about 400 million cars on the road. Now, roughly translating, if drivers buy a car about every 10 years or sothere are
10-year scrapping policies as a basis for this assumptionthats
about 40 million vehicles sold every year.
In 2011, there was about 18 million sold. Therefore, we
wouldnt say its saturatedalthough we see clogging effects in
big citiesbut as far as the country as a whole, there is good
reason why so many people are optimistic about the automobile market and automobile coatings in China. For the automobile coatings market, this translates to a healthy demand
for OEM coatings.

What are some other developments in the

market besides automotives themselves that
you see driving the auto coatings market in
China?
Johnson: The insurance industry will be a major driver for repair coatings. As the insurance market becomes more mature,
more cars will be legally covered, claims will be led more regularly that will cause the demand for repair coatings to increase.
The insurance market has made good progress in coverage and
credibility over the past decade. As drivers get insurance coverage and more expensive cars, they are more likely to take their
vehicle to be repaired and to maintain their original value.

Are we seeing faster growth in repair coatings

relative to OEM coatings?
Johnson: Yes. Repair coatings and OEM coatings are fundamentally different in terms of where theyre used, how theyre
used, and so are drivers affecting their growth. For repair coatings, both the number of cars on the road, the value of the average car and the average distance driven are all increasing.
This is at least in part related to improvements in Chinas
roadway infrastructure. All of this translates into growth in
the repair coatings market, especially for higher-end foreign
coatings. These coatings are used to repair some of the newer,
higher value cars such as Mercedes and BMWs being sold in
China. The overall value of cars on the road is increasing, and
therefore the importance of 4S and Tier 1 repair shops, are
also increasing.
But again, another issue that is affecting the total sales growth
of repair coatings is the low-end market and its wider range of
applications. The advantage is that repair coatings can simply be
sprayed-on and do not require heating like most OEM coatings
do. On a unit cost basis, repair coatings are typically more expensive than OEM coatings, because unlike OEM coatings, repair coatings dont require heating.
Additionally, as far as repair coatings go, many Chinese

drivers actually refinish their entire vehicle to maintain the

value. That is another significant driver of repair coatings and
something that is somewhat unique about the Chinese market.
Therefore, we expect to see a bump in refinish coatings around
2014 or 2015, or about four to five years after the 2009-10
boom in car sales.

Are there coating applications outside of the

automobile market that were significant for
sales in China?
Johnson: OEM paint manufacturers are essentially trying to
make their products more attractive to end-users. So what do
end-users want? End-users are car manufacturers and they
want to cut costs. This creates several efficiency and demand
trends in the industry that will also affect the sales of OEM
coatings. For example, competition is too high for OEMs to
pass-on excess costs to customers, and consequently, they put
pressure on their upstream suppliers to offer a cheaper product. Therefore, some coatings suppliers may have introduced
products that reduce costs by combining functions between
coating layers, or offering a paint that can be applied in thinner coats.

Because repair coatings are the fastest growing

segment of the market, do you see foreign
suppliers moving into repair coatings?
Johnson: Well, there are many foreign players that are already
selling repair coatings. PPG, AkzoNobel, DuPont, Nippon, KCC,
Sherwin Williams, BASF and some others are already in the market. This makes entry for a new foreign player difcult because
they would need to compete against these huge multinationals at
the high-end of the market. It wouldnt make sense for a foreign
player to try to compete at the low-end of the market, as a foreign supplier simply cannot, or more likely does not want to

compete on price. Therefore, they need to nd a buyer who is

willing to pay a premium.

Let me ask you the opposite question. Do you

see any Chinese coatings producers moving into
the market for high-end coatings?
Johnson: Yes, there are a few Chinese producers that offer highend coatings. Daoqum and Guangzhou Strong Chemical are examples of local rms that offer high-end products, although their
market share isnt especially high; each holds around ve percent or so.

Who are the key OEMs in this market?

Johnson: The largest car manufacturers, or OEMs include
Hyundai, Dongfang, FAW, Changgang, Great Wall, Honda, VW,
GM, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, and the other multinational car
manufacturers. There are a lot of different automobile brands
produced in China.

Why study the Chinese automobile coatings

market?
Johnson: Generally, we are very selective in the subject that
we choose to study in a Limited Production Study, or LPS report. There is a long list of requirements that a product or
market must meet before we can go ahead with the study.
Some of those requirements include market size, composition,
and concentration. We do not do market studies on markets
that are heavily concentrated around domestic players, for instance. Also, the market must segment well. A study on instrumentation would be difficult because of the wide range of
product segments.
Another important issue is market concentration. Put simply, we wont do a market study in a market that has 1,000
players and none of which has a market share of over one percent; getting a representative sample would
require far too many interviews.
Specically, in this report, we interviewed
about 40 different players, which represent
about 80 to 90 percent of the entire market,
which is a very good concentration. For this
study, we spoke to a total of 84 players, including suppliers, channel players, end-users
and repair shops as well as industry experts
with individuals in academia, industry associations and regulatory organizations. CW

Repair coatings are difficult to define in China. A companyreally only domesticmight

sell the same paint to repair shops as they do to low speed electric vehicle, or even bus and
truck, OEMs. This makes a total market size difficult to define, especially when you compare numbers offered by domestic companies with those of foreign companies.

Does Chinas
Remarkable Growth
Have Feet Of Clay?

Despite a slowdown Chinas GDP growth is still expected to do well compared to other
countries, projected to deliver a relatively impressive seven to eight percent in 2012.
by Dan Watson, Contributing Writer

ver the past few years much has been said about the
amazing economic and industrial growth achieved by
China. Lets be honest, Chinas growth has been absolutely remarkable and is the envy of the world. In 2010
China became the worlds second largest economy, exceeded
only in gross domestic product (GDP) by the U.S. Japan was a
distant third, eclipsed by China in 2001 with a repeat every
year thereafter. By any metric that we could use, Chinas success over the last three decades has been extraordinary. Chinas
agricultural and industrial production both surpassed the dollar value of the U.S. output for 2010. In recent years China has
seen the evolution of a genuine middle class, which has fueled
an unprecedented real estate boom inside China. Last year
there were a number of China pundits speculating that China
would overtake the U.S. in GDP before the end of this decade.

Given the current anemic U.S. economic recovery one cannot

rule out this happening.
As the US continues to amass more debt it is fairly clear that
there isnt a game plan in place to solve the declining economic
condition or the massive unemployment situation. Although in
recent months the U.S. has seen a slowdown in home foreclosures the overall housing market is anything but healthy. The volume of U.S. home lending dropped 10 percent last year to the
lowest level since 1995, highlighting the current administrations
uphill battle to prop up the still-struggling housing sector. Unfortunately, the drop in lending may be tied to the U.S. Government banking regulations whose requirements have in affect
curbed actual mortgage lending. China doesnt have this restriction and in fact has cut interest rates multiple times this year to
attract more buyers.
In the past few months we have noticed that Federal Regulators are trying some risky approaches to shore up the U.S. housing market. Just four years after toxic U.S. mortgages brought
the global nancial system to its knees and triggered the deepest
recession since the Great Depression, U.S. housing regulators
may be making it easier for banks to make bad loans without

suffering losses. Its difcult to tell if this is a short-term focus

brought about by the upcoming Presidential election or its a genuine effort to jump start the housing market.
The U.S. is not alone in suffering negative housing data. Although not nearly as drastic a situation as can be found in the
U.S. market there are troubling signs that the China economic
bubble is experiencing signicant stress. Back in July of this year,
Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao signaled that the Chinese
economy is facing huge downward pressure. This is the
bluntest message to date from Beijing about the Asian powerhouses economic problems.
Chinas GDP growth is still expected to do well compared to
other countriesprojected to deliver a relatively impressive
seven to eight percent in 2012but that is considerably slower
than the Herculean 10-plus percent rate it has recorded in recent
years. With exports falling due mainly to the depressed economic
conditions in Europe and the U.S. and the Chinese real estate
market crumbling, China has experienced a genuine rst time
slowdown in its real estate development.
In an effort to address these problems Chinas government has
taken steps to boost economic growth by cutting interest rates and
approving new infrastructure projects through a stimulus effort.
However, a number of China pundits worry that Chinas stimulus lite policies will do little to prevent a hard fall, which would
have negative consequences for the U.S. and other countries that
have come to rely on China to fuel the global economy. Since 2007,
China has contributed signicantly more to world growth than any
other country, and this is projected to remain the case into the foreseeable future. Is China just experiencing a normal economic adjustment or is China on the verge of a genuine economic crash
similar to what Europe and the U.S. have experienced?

Before addressing this question its important to point out the

key differences between what is happening in Chinas real estate
market as opposed to the U.S. experience. First of all, although
there are signs of a denite slow down especially in select cities,
what we have not seen is a depression of real estate prices as happened in the U.S. in 2006 onward.
In fact, in most areas in China real estate prices have at worse
stabilized or in some instances, slightly increased. This has not
happened in the U.S. market where real estate prices have declined as much as 50 to 60 percent in some areas fueled mostly
by more than 3.7 million home foreclosures. In fact, in the U.S.
home foreclosures are still underway today.
The Chinese banking system is very different from the U.S.
model in that Chinas banking system is more or less government-owned. This changes the rules of the game considerably.
Standard risk management variables, such as the required capital adequacy ratio, which, by the way, is extremely high
amongst Chinese banks, and the non-performing loan ratio,
are only of marginal relevance because the integrity of the
biggest banks is guaranteed by the government. Chinas central
government is willing and able to act on that guarantee if required to do so.
The level of public debt outstanding in China is modest and
even when contingent liabilities are taken into account, such as
debt taken on by local governments, the prospect of China
falling victim to a European style public debt crisis borders on
impossible. In fact, unlike the experience in the U.S., there is
little evidence that any deterioration in the housing market has
infected the Chinese banking system. Realizing that nationwide house prices have not in fact declined, this is perhaps not
a surprising situation.

With exports falling due mainly to the depressed economic conditions in Europe and the U.S. and the Chinese real estate market crumbling,
China has experienced a genuine first time slowdown in its real estate development.

China Strategy

There are other reasons for differences in the two systems as

well. One is simply that the Chinese are much more likely to fund
their home purchases from savings, often calling upon the assistance of various family members in the process. In part this reects cultural differences where the Chinese in general are debt
aversive, but also it reects strict down payment requirements
imposed on borrowers by Chinese banks.
Although these difference somewhat insulate the Chinese
banking system from the melt down experienced in the U.S. it
has not thwarted the fact that China is experiencing a genuine
slowdown of unprecedented proportions. Economic data released earlier this month by the National Bureau of Statistics
showed the extent of the problems. Investment in new buildings
and other xed assets is in the doldrums.
Manufacturers are retreating from ambitious production
goals as they struggle with bloated inventories of unsold goods.
Even the service sector, still underdeveloped and widely seen by
economists as full of potential, is showing signicant signs of distress. In fact, most observers believe that Chinas economy is
weakening more rapidly than ofcial statistics would suggest,
which could lead to a much sharper decline than what many
economists expect.
The ongoing debt crisis in Europe has stied a lot of Chinese
exports, while at lining the new middle class consumer demand
within China has led to thousands of layoffs, stagnant sales of
heavy machinery, and record amounts of coal and iron ore going
to waste. Soon it will be obvious to most observers that China is
in the midst of a painful slowdown that most likely will be felt
around the globe.
However, lets not forget, China is in the midst of a tremendous transition from being a producer and exporter of cheap
goods to a fully industrialized country with strong internal and
external demands for high quality technology products. This
means that the Chinese leadership want the economy to slow a
little bit as the country reduces its dependency on cheap exports.
This scenario is a very risky situation especially if the desired
changeover is clumsily executed. If China botches the transition
effort, it could nd itself in real trouble. Facing a decline in exports and a stagnating domestic market might cause the current
leadership to make hasty, irrational decisions rather than following the original game plan.
To most observers, China is viewed as a journalists dream
and a statisticians nightmare, with more human drama and
fewer veriable facts per square mile than anywhere else in the
world, except perhaps in the U.S. during a presidential election
campaign. These days, the statisticians dilemma in China extends not simply to the problem of what is true but also to that
of what is important and what truly matters. In the era of a
growing China, every agency and investment banker, every shortseller, risk analyst and brand consultant is poised to offer a prediction on Chinas economic future. With so many experts
dominating the information highway how do you separate the
static from the real signal?
Back in early July, China stepped up its efforts to reverse the
deepest slowdown since the global nancial crisis in the worlds
60 | Coatings World

Most observers feel that China has

bottomed out in its economic slowdown
and is poised to take advantage of growth
opportunities around the globe. Their
game plan is to overtake the U.S. GDP output before the end of this decade. How
they will do that without a strong and vibrant export market remains to be seen.
However, it is obvious that China is in a
much better financial/economic position
as compared to the U.S. or the EU. Still, it
is also clear that Chinas future is very much

and EU economies.
second-biggest economy. The central government mandated a cut
in interest rates for the second time in a month. Since no one was
expecting another interest rate cut before the end of the year, this
move strongly suggested that the rst cut didnt accomplish its intended outcome. It was speculated then that the Chinese leaders
feared that left unchanged there would be an issuance of a slate
of new economic numbers that they felt was likely to give investors serious doubts about Chinas nancial future.
Some China observers such as Barrons had already declared
that it looks like the Great China Growth Story may be falling
apart. Although relevant data does not fully indicate this happening one still has to ask, Is this true?
As my legal friends often remark to questions of this nature,
It depends. It depends in part on how deep the U.S. will continue to sink economically and for how long; how quickly Europe starts to improve; how resilient is the new Chinese middle
class; and how effective are the pseudo stimulus efforts by the
Chinese Government. In short, the future of China is truly tied
to the nancial health of the rest of the world. Chinas domestic
market cannot by itself sustain the level of growth experienced
by China over the past three decades.
Regarding the U.S. recovery, somewhat similar to the statements about the difculty in verifying China data the U.S. election has thrown a fog on unbiased, real data access. Each month
we noticed that the current U.S. administration has to redo the

previous month data regarding unemployment and other key

economic metrics. This leads to more speculation than actual
facts about the U.S. economic recovery.
In August, there was a release of data that indicated that
home resales rose to their highest rate in more than two years
and groundbreaking on new homes also climbed yielding hopeful signs that a budding housing market recovery is gaining a bit
of traction. Of course, the question of sustainability of such efforts has to be addressed.
At the moment we are entering a period of the year in the
U.S. in which home salesresale or neware not normally robust. Other key economic metrics such as median Income indicate that on average U.S. households have lost about $4,000
compared to what they had at the close of 2008. Unemployment rate remains high and is projected to continue well into
next year at current levels. In addition, there isnt a real game
plan in place to reduce the staggering U.S. national debt now
standing at over $16 trillion.
The ongoing battle between opposing political parties will
most likely continue following the upcoming election regardless
of which side is elected to the position of President. This means
that little if anything will be done to reduce the debt in the shortterm. Meanwhile, the EU is embroiled in internal conict with
member states, in particular, Spain. The bottom line here is that
if Chinas economic future is truly dependent on a more stable,
healthy and robust U.S. and EU economy that may not happen
in the short-term.
Most observers feel that China has bottomed out in its economic slowdown and is poised to take advantage of growth opportunities around the globe. Their game plan is to overtake the
U.S. GDP output before the end of this decade. How they will do
that without a strong and vibrant export market remains to be
seen. However, it is obvious that China is in a much better nancial/economic position as compared to the U.S. or the EU.
Still, it is also clear that Chinas future is very much tied in with
the recovery of both the U.S. and EU economies.
My answer to the question, Is the Great China Growth Story
falling apart? is a somewhat weak MAYBE. Remember, real
growth for China has slowed as China is still very much dependent on its traditional export market, which in turn is dependent on the nancial health of their international trading
partners. Many of those partners have also invested heavily inside China over the past decades and today they too are experiencing a genuine slowdown in sales, both domestic and
international, as product inventories build up in their Chinabased manufacturing facilities. Some have already had to lay off
employees with more drastic actions to come.
Its quite likely that China will continue its recent policy of allowing the Yuan to devalue in order to stabilize or grow its export market. China is also committed to pursuing other options
to become less dependent on imports of crude oil and other critical materials. More effort is planned to shore up the edging
middle class and developing a domestic service industry. China
leadership maintains that although a slowdown has happened it
is simply a short-term reaction to external factors, which they

feel will be resolved in a reasonable time period. For certain

China is still committed to overtaking the U.S. economically. As
always, the question is, How and when?
In the meantime, Chinas leaders President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao are embroiled in a critical two-prong activity
coping with the worst economic slowdown in over three years
and preparing for a change in the countrys leadership. Both Hu
and Wen are due to be replaced in a communist party conclave
meeting to be held sometime in October or perhaps November.
It is widely speculated in China that the major reason for being
so difcult to set an exact date for such an important meeting is
that the high level party members have not yet come to an agreement of the new core members of the party management.
Most observers believe that it has long been agreed that Xi
Jinping will replace Hu and Li Keqiang will replace Wen. However, at this time, the exact schedule for this happening is still
unknown. Internally, Hu and Wen are doing their best to stabilize and stimulate the economylowering the interest rate is one
of the approaches used. Even facing QE3, the Yuan has been articially kept low in the hopes that exports would not drop too
much. It is expected that these efforts would at least continue for
a while after the leadership change.
The Hu-Wen period raises the bar for future successors.
Under the Hu-Wen leadership, Chinas economy grew four times
the size it was in 2002, the year in which they came to power, rising from sixth to second place in global rankings, with the greatest amount of foreign reserves, and the largest levels of exports
and second largest imports.
However, not everything has been positive under their leadership. Chinas remarkable growth has given rise to a number of
internal problems, which include: stagnant economic restructuring, pollution; income disparity; greater inequality; the highly
unpopular and outdated family planning process and household
registration polices; a marked increase tension in the Chinese society between various groups; a looming energy crisis; moral
degradation; and the countrys battered international image. In
addition, today China reportedly spends more on internal security than on its national defense.
The new leaders will encounter all of these problems, and
more, and will also have to decide how to balance the continuing need for growth against other sociopolitical reforms that will
be politically risky, but are the only way to try to create stability
and balance in a society, which is becoming wealthier, freer and
more unruly. Balancing this situation against the Communist
Partys need to control everything will be a daunting task for the
new leadership.
China is now in an era when the tension between the ofcials
and those they are meant to be ruling has reached fever pitch.
Recent internal surveys show that central leaders still maintain
some level of moral credibility within the Chinese society. However, the same survey indicated that local leaders are regarded
with large amounts of loathing. It has been noted that public expressed cynicism about politics in China are on a par with, or
even in excess, of those in the west. Welcome to the real world

With the maturing of the paint market in China, specialization in high value-added products has emerged as the key to
profitability. Commercial success no longer hinges on volume
or turnover but on high performance. At the same time, environmental considerations are exerting additional pressure on
product development. Most high performance coating systems
have their own drawbacks, requiring specific technical solutions, often based on complex and clever chemistry, for a problem-free application.
Much of the current R&D work thus focuses on the creation
of high performance products and technologies leading to high

productivity at the shop oor and high differentiation in the market place through the development of value added features and
functionalities based on innovative chemistry. Rising labor and
application costs, moreover, make long lasting high-durability
coatings particularly attractive since it helps delaying the maintenance interval thereby saving cost.
The topic of high-grade coatings is also important in the
face of mounting competition and the pressure on commoditization. A high quality coating is the key for high differentiation
and high growth.
The presentation of papers and post-presentation discussions
will be conducted in both English and Chinese (Putonghua).

High Grade Coatings: Technology Update. He says the two
driving forces of nanotechnology and smart coatings in the past
two decades have fueled vigorous research and development
work on polymeric coatings. The result of such movement has
been the development of high performance and high valued coating materials. These coatings not only function as protective and
decorative materials, they also push the performance envelop
well beyond traditional denition of coatings. Included in this
class of new developments are high temperature resistant polymeric coatings, stimuli responsive, super high solids liquid coatings, self-stratifying, superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic, and
biologically active and corrosion sensing coatings. This paper
provides a brief discussion of technology, properties and application of these high performance and high valued coatings.

For 3C Products. In the 3C electronic products (computer,
communication and consumer electronics) market, the use of
UV coatings has increased significantly over the last decade.
Main reason for this growth is the excellent performance that
can be achieved with UV coatings, especially very good wear
resistance, outdoor durability and resistance against household chemicals and fat for the plastic parts. With an ever increasing demand for high performance and longer lasting
parts, combined with the global occurring shift to more environmentally friendly coating technology, UV coatings will
have a bright future in 3C electronics as the best technology
to deliver this combination.
Theme 2: Sustainable Coatings Technology will be covered

in wood coatings are: 100% UV and Water Borne. Waterborne
coatings have been gaining importance and market share particularly in Europe and North America before. In China, government and general publics concern for environment has also
significantly increased. More and more wood coating producers have started to implement waterborne coatings. With improved technology, these products are not just environmental
friendly, but also better performing than before. This presentation gives a summary about application of additives in Waterborne Wood Coatings.

speakers: Angeline Ding Woan, technical marketing manager,
Ashland Specialty Ingredients; Paul Cameron, research and technology manager, Croda; and Erwin Honcoop, technical marketing specialist, Purac Biochem BV.
Ms. Woan will deliver, Biocides in Coatings: Sustain Release
Technology. The addition of a dry lm biocide to coating is necessary to prevent the paint lm from microbial defacement. Biocides migrate to the lm surface to exert biocidal effect. This
renders the biocides susceptible to water leaching as well as to
degradation by UV/heat. Sustain release technology through encapsulation into an inorganic carrier has been developed to enhance leach resistance of various actives substances. This results
in a longer coating shelf life given the same initial biocide concentration as well as a more environmentally friendly prole.
Mr. Cameron will deliver, Speciality Fatty Biobased
Monomers for Coatings. Dimer fatty acids have been used for
many years to bring high performance to materials such as epoxy
coatings and hotmelt polyamide adhesives. There are recently developed many new grades of related biobased monomers. These
bring a number of special properties including better color,
UV/heat/color stability and controlled functionality, in conjunction with other long established benets such as hydrolytic stability, adhesion and exibility. The technology can also bring low
viscosity, enabling low VOC, and can be used in many types of
coating, including polyurethane dispersion, radcure, epoxy and
saturated polyester.
Mr. Honcoop will deliver, Improved Polyester Coatings with
Lactide as Biobased Building Block. Polyester resins have been
used for many years to produce high performance materials such
as solvent-based coatings. In the course of time the systems have
changed towards reduced VOC products. The next challenge in
the industry is to improve the carbon footprint of coating systems. Possibilities for CO2 reductions can be found in the use of
materials from renewable resource. Lactide has been developed
as a sustainable product, which can be used as chemical building
block to build polyester resins. Lactide has a low carbon footprint, which provides a way to achieve CO2 reduction. Incorporated in polyester resins the new building block gives a lower
resin viscosity without compromising the coating performance.
Additionally the derived polyester coatings show enhanced hardness whilst maintaining exibility. CW

Dow Corning offers 3055 resin

for low VOC polysiloxane
coatings
With Dow Corning 3055 Resin, manufacturers of high-performance paints and coatings
can
formulate
low-VOC,
next-generation polysiloxane coatings with
urethane, epoxy, polyester, alkyd, amine and
acrylic systems utilizing amine functionality,
according to the company. Unlike moisturecured polysiloxanes, Dow Corning 3055
Resin does not require titanate/tin catalysts
or ambient moisture to cure. As a result,
Dow Corning 3055 Resin does not contribute to volatile by-products that can cause
lm stress and adhesion loss. Polysiloxane
hybrid coatings formulated with The company reports that Dow Corning 3055 Resin
have exhibited long-term exibility and improved chemical, thermal, UV, corrosion and
moisture resistance compared to epoxy and

two-component polyurethane systems. Most

notably, adding Dow Corning 3055 Resin
improves the chemical resistance and exibility of polysiloxane coatings beyond that
of a traditional epoxy topcoat. Compared to
two-component polyurethane coatings,
polysiloxane coatings with Dow Corning
3055 Resin have similar physical properties
- but with better corrosion resistance.

Omnovas Hydro Pliolite WL

acrylic binder for sealers
Omnova Solutions recently unveiled
Hydro Pliolite WL modied acrylate
copolymer for wet-look concrete sealers.
Based on Omnovas proprietary EBS
(emulsied binding system) technology,
this water-based acrylic binder can be formulated into a wet-look concrete sealer
with a superior appearance and performance versus traditional latex-based sealers.
Coatings formulated with Hydro Pliolite
WL provide better adhesion and penetration to concrete surfaces and deliver a true
wet look similar in appearance to solvent-based sealers, according to the company. The new resin has excellent blush
resistance and is non-yellowing.

Evonik launches Tego Disperse

757 W dispersant for high
performance waterborne
coatings
Evonik has introduced Tego Disperse 757
W, designed for premium pigment concentrates used in all waterborne industrial
coatings but particularly where durability
and corrosion protection are important.
Additionally, Tego Disperse 757 W can be
utilized in wood and architectural coatings where there is an emphasis on humidity, moisture, and weathering
resistance. Tego Disperse 757 W enables
the production of highly pigmented mill
bases. Even at low additive levels, dispersion properties such as stability and color
strength are enhanced which can lead to
cost savings and less inuence on coatings
properties the company said. CW

A Pirate Adventure With HMG Paints

The employees at HMG Paints are in a particularly swashbuckling mood this month with the DVD release of, The Pirates! In
an Adventure with Scientists, the latest animated lm to be produced by Aardman Animations.
Over the last three years, HMG
Paints, the UKs largest independent industrial paints manufacturer, have
worked alongside Aardman Animations
to supply them with a range of highly
specialized coatings. These were used to paint the puppet-stars of
the animated lm.
The lm follows the escapades of the boundlessly enthusiastic,
if somewhat less-than-successful Pirate Captains attempts to beat
his bitter rivals, Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz to the much-coveted Pirate of the Year Award. Along the way, the Pirate Captain
and his rag-tag crew do battle with the pirate-hating Queen Victoria and team up with a young Charles Darwin, but never lose
sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure! The characters voices
are provided by an all-star cast featuring Hugh Grant, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Martin
Freeman, Jeremy Piven and other
members of Hollywoods elite.
Production for the film began
in 2007 and HMG Paints were
involved at a very early stage in
the project supplying the necessary coatings for the puppets. A
crew of 525 people worked on
the film, including 70 model
makers that used HMG Paints
products to bring color and life
to the 250 puppets created.
The coatings supplied by HMG

82 | Coatings World

were used extensively on the heads and mouths of the puppets.

Animators use a vast number of mouths during lming, which are
interchanged to create speech between characters. These mouths
complete with teeth and tongue, are computer generated and
printed on resin via a Rapid 3D Prototyping printer. The mouths
are then manipulated and pre-posed in a number of expressions
before being masked and painted.
In order to meet these very specic and demanding requirements, HMG Paints put together a product offering that would
provide the necessary exibility, durability, and vibrant color.
HMGs 1K Vinyl Acrylic, PVC94, was ideal for this usage as its
exibility and adhesion allow for quick and easy application to
plastic substrates. HMGs LMP water-based acrylic system was
also supplied for its adhesion properties and as an alternative to
the solvent-based paints on offer.
The high quality products and service offered by HMG Paints
has attracted the attention of a number of Hollywoods elites and
their products are currently being used on several other movie
sets across the world. CW
