Human Rights, Fairness and Development Reflective Essay
During the trip to Yogyakarta, one of the NGOs that I have visited is the Yakkum
Rehabilitation Centre that focuses in treating children and adults with disabilities especially
for the victims of cerebral palsy. Although these disabilities may not be cured, Yakkum
Rehabilitation Centre encourages these victims to become people that are independent and
strong. This NGO provides care and education to help them excel in life and become brave to
interact with the world. Through having the chance of visiting this NGO, I have learned that
people with disabilities does not want to become a burden for others, but they just want the
right to be accepted and treated equal without discrimination, to be given a chance, and as
blessed people we must be thankful and supportive.
Since we are all born with no control whether we will be normal or born unfortunate
with disabilities, we still need to be thankful of what we have. People who are born with
disabilities are looking to not only be cared but they also want to live a life like other normal
people do. Even though they are different from us, they still are humans that have equal rights
and emotions. With the chance given by the NGO, the disabilities might actually be able to
live and to take care for themselves in the outside world, but without our acceptance to let
them live normal, it will be hard for them since the world does not accept and discriminates
them. Under the UDHR, people have the rights to not be discriminated in this world, but
people have violated and abused this rights since the disabilities are different and not the
same like us. With the visit in this Centre, eyes have been opened that people with disabilities

still has the chance to live normal, but with how the world treats them, it makes them fail to
always excel in life.
Although as normal people we are not perfect, we are different in the eyes of the one
with disabilities. God created us as his own image and that God has a plan with what is
happening now and tomorrow. It is also in Gods plan that these people with disabilities must
go through the pain and the temptations, but we will never know what that plan is, since we
are just human beings. The bible teaches us to accept and give chance to other people,
nevertheless that they are with disabilities or not. Through simple things such as giving them
the chance to live their life without discrimination is already something great that they would
like to have in life. With this teaching, we must realize that people with disabilities are
actually the same like us, but they are just chosen by God to live a life that is just slightly
different from us.
Becoming blessed people, it means that we will need to chance the world more
compare to the people with disabilities. Since God gives us a normal life, we must use our
normal life for people who are need. In this case, people with disabilities are the one, who
needs help from these people to be given a chance in life so they can life a normal life.
Throughout this trip to the Yakkum Rehabilitation Centre, I have seen people with disabilities
and that it made me realize that with a life that I have now, I must be thankful for what I have
already have. This consciousness must also be experienced with other people, because there
are not little people that are not thankful for the life that they have.
In conclusion, I have learned that God has a plan for everything, and we must be
thankful for that plan that has been given to us from God. From all these experience, there are
actually people who are not that fortunate compared to our life, and the only thing that these
people with disabilities want, is that acceptance and chance from our normal life. The UDHR

also consider all people living in this world to be a part of this establishment, and that
although they are different with disabilities, they still have the rights to the UDHR.
