Clinical Practice
My goal is to obtain full time
employment on a Med-Surg
floor in order to build a solid
foundation in my nursing skills
and eventually transition to
either working in critical care or
the emergency room.

Once I complete the ADN

program at KCC and pass my
NCLEX board exam and obtain
my license, I will apply at my
current employer for a med surg
RN position. I will also apply at
other facililities that still offer
employment for ADN nursing
degrees.

The biggest asset that I have

that will benefit me in becoming
a great nurse is my work ethic
and my commitment to always
trying to improve my nursing

Leadership

Professional Development

Although I spent only one eight

hour shift shadowing Gary, a
fifteen year registered nurse at
Kaiser Moanalua Med Surgical
Unit, his nursing knowledge base,
work ethic, and effective
communication skills with his
assigned patients, gave me the
motivation to want to emulate him
once I become a nurse.

I recently got accepted into the

University of Hawaii at Hilo RN to
BSN program. I realize that being in
the nursing field gives you the
challenge of constantly having to
update your nursing skills and
knowledge base.

I will keep an open mind during

my clinical rotation and work
environment in observing and
learning nursing skills that I find
will benefit me in becoming a
competent nurse. I will attend any
continued nursing education in
the community that offers
leadership training.

I will set aside time each day to read

nursing topics that will improve my
knowledge base. I will also sign up
for continued nursing courses/
conventions that are offered in the
community.

My leadership strength is the

ability to lead by example and
always emphasize a team
approach. I truly believe that
utilizing peoples strengths

My commitment to continuing my
education can only build on my
foundation of becoming a better
leader.

skills.

benefits the care that is provided

to our patients.

Skills/competencies: Describe
the skills and competencies
you bring to the role.

The biggest strength that I bring

to the role of being a nurse is my
prior experience of working as a
nurse aide, Licensed Practical
Nurse, and float pool Med Surg
unit clerk. I think working in
these different positions has
given me a solid foundation to
build my nursing career. It has
also given me a better
appreciation that each role has
in offering a holistic approach to
care.

From a leadership perspective,

having a foundation based on a
democratic approach will
communicate to my peers that
their input is also important in my
decision making process.

Having clinical and job experience

will help me to better understand
concepts/skills that are discussed in
a class setting. This can only
reinforce my knowledge base.

Areas targeted for growth:

From your own self
assessment, describe what
areas in yourself that you
would like to strengthen.

The biggest challenge for me as

as a future nurse is to build a
strong foundation in my
assessment skills. I think this is
vital in being able to
prevent/intervene in a patient
decompensating.

From a leadership standpoint, the

biggest challenge for me is to
become more assertive and take
on challenges in my clinical/work
environment that will build on my
leadership skills. This may
involve volunteering on work
committees and in-services.

My greatest challenge is to
continually push myself to continue
my education. Nursing is a lifelong
learning process that involves
personal commitment and sacrifice.
Nursing is constantly evolving to
provide the best possible care that is
evidenced based.
