Science- Five Senses
Pre-K
15-25 minutes (depending on how many of the bags students
have time to do)
We have five senses: see, hear, taste, touch, and smell.
Our senses are always working.
Sometimes we use more than one sense and less of
another sense.
What are our five senses?
How can we use our five senses?
Are we always using all of our senses at once?
3.1a.9: Use the five senses as tools with which to
observe, collect information, classify, describe and
solve problems.
Students will help to complete the stick figure model by
placing the correct body parts that align with the
senses on the figure 5/5 times. (should place each body
part correctly)
Students will use the application of three senses (smell,
hear, touch), to identify mystery objects inside of 2-3
bags.
Students will show understanding of all five senses by
completing the review worksheet with 80% accuracy
(8/10 are correct).
Formal/Summative Evaluation
Review worksheet is completed with 80% accuracy
(8/10 are correct)
Informal/Formative Evaluation

Activating Prior Knowledge
Subject will be introduced by asking students if they have
ever heard of our five senses? Where did they hear it? Do
you know any of our senses?
Students will be invited to come and sit on the floor in
front of the board to listen to the story.
Read, My Five Senses by Aliki.
During the introduction using the book, we will pause and
practice identifying these body parts and what we do
with them.
Connections will be made to senses and body parts.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
After reading story, I will draw a stick figure without,
eyes, ears, mouth, nose and hands, on the board
I will ask children to think about the important features
that the person is missing? What did we just talk about?
If needed, I will prompt them to say that the figure needs
eyes, and continue through to add ears, nose, hands and
mouth.
I will explain that we have five senses to learn about the
world around us- seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and
feeling.
Transition
Students will be given instructions for the activity.
When instructed, students will move to appropriate table
they are assigned to based on color of their name tagblue, yellow or red table
o BLUE- Chase, Sophia, and Dante
o YELLOW- Kaylee and Domenick
o RED- Lucy, Amelia, and Drew

PreAssessment of Students
Will occur during the anticipatory set. Students will be
engaged in the story, My Five Senses, and will activate
their prior knowledge about what they already know.
Modeling/Guiding the Practice
After reading story, I will draw a stick figure without,
eyes, ears, mouth, nose and hands, on the board
I will ask children to think about the important features
that the person is missing? What did we just talk about?
If needed, I will prompt them to say that the figure needs
eyes, and continue through to add ears, nose, hands and
mouth.
I will explain that we have five senses to learn about the
world around us- seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and
feeling.
I will then show an example of how the brownbag activity
will work, explaining for this activity that we will only be
using three senses: TOUCH, SMELL, and HEAR.
Explain that we will not be tasting or looking at what is
inside the bag using reminders on the board.
Transition
Students will be given instructions for the activity.
When instructed, students will move to appropriate table
they are assigned to based on color of their name tagblue, yellow or red area
o BLUE- Chase, Sophia, and Dante
o YELLOW- Kaylee and Domenick
o RED- Lucy, Amelia, and Drew
Providing the Independent Practice
In groups or two or three, students will be assigned to go
to a specific colored area in the room.
There will be 3 bags at each table. Students should take
turns and use the three senses (touch, smell and hear) to
figure out what is inside each bag.
**Depending on how much time we have, students may
end up switching tables and figuring out what is in each
bag. **
o If so, students will spend about 2 minutes at each

At the conclusion of the activity, each group will pick one
of the items to talk about and we will look what is inside
each of the bags.
Transition
Students will go back to their seats when they hear the
first letter of their last name. (may not be necessary if
students are already at tables)

Summary & Review of the Learning
To review, the teacher will provide a worksheet that the
student should complete with 80% accuracy.
The worksheet includes 10 pictures and the students
should use the correct color and shape around the
objects as identified on the directions.
4 students will be at each table and the teacher as well
as other student teacher will help to give directions at
each table in small groups.
The teacher will guide the practice and students will
complete the activity with the teacher
Homework/Assignments
If students do not finish their review worksheet they
should complete it for homework.
