Our or ani ation was established in March

as a non- overnmental orani ation NGO by the directors of independent re ional T companies. Our
purpose was to broaden our broadcastin ran e, to provide detailed information about on oin events for the population of the re ion, includin re ional
minorities.
Our rst product, throu h which the Media Center became known in Samtskhe-Javakheti, was the pro ram, aralleli, an informative pro ram aired in
Geor ian and Armenian. The pro ram was broadcasted by the Media Center s
partner re ional T companies. t was supported by the nternational Research and E chan e Council RE .
The talk show ree Microphone provided the opportunity for citi ens in Akhaltsikhe and Borjomi to have
their voices heard. ocal residents were interviewed and their concerns aired so that overnment of cials
could respond. ree Microphone was produced with the support of the S Embassy.
This partnership with local T Companies has become a powerful tool for the Media Center to help make
civil society more active and to help support the democratic process in the re ions.
urin this time we reali ed the importance of helpin new non- overnmental or ani ations and, therefore we e panded our tar et roup to include NGOs as well as independent media.
ith the support of
British etroleum B , Save the Children, and its partners, the Media Center established resource centers
in Borjomi and in Adi eni for non- overnmental or ani ations. The resource centers provide trainin s and
consultations and helped develop an environmental campai n in Borjomi.
was an important year for our or ani ation.

leaders from Borjomi and the villa es surroundin it. The youth used this opportunity to develop and mana e an advocacy campai n for the ri hts of the disabled children in Borjomi. e think that workin in this
direction is especially needed and important in this re ion. The Club was created with the support of a SA Small rojects Assistance rant administered by the S eace Corps.
Our current project, omen Get nvolved and ote has met with reat success. e or ani ed a network

Network of

omen Community eaders

The Media Center of Samtskhe-Javakheti, with the

support of the National emocratic nstitute and the
British Embassy, started the project omen Get nvolved and ote in July
.
The Media Center created a network of
omen
Community eaders in ve diverse municipalities
Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, Borjomi, Marneuli and
Ninotsminda. These women represent different ethnic and reli ious back rounds, but they are united in
their oal to empower local women and encoura e
their participation in the decision-makin process.
These women hold informal discussion roups in
their cities and villa es, help or ani e a monthly talk
show in each of their municipalities, and encoura e
their peers and collea ues to think about ender balance in their families, work places, social settin s and politics.
Network of omen eaders consists of ve municipalities in two re ions, where they arran e meetin s and
discussions systematically.

Common Goals nite s

omen Get nvolved and ote, has been a uni ue and unprecedented project from the very be innin in
vemo artli. An active women s network, which unites women from every eld is very important for the
re ion especially because, apart from other problems, women are divided by different social roups.
Another aspect which makes the project remarkable is that project participants, active women leaders, have
the opportunity to plan their ne t activities independently. This format allows participants to take responsibility for the project and ives participants the chance to take a major part in its implementation.
hat problems were identi ed durin the meetin s
At our meetin s, we discussed our social problems and livin conditions in detail.
e discovered that the
population is uninformed and that there is an information vacuum in villa es about overnment processes.

e are still far from
achievin ender e uality in our society. The low percenta e of women in parliament proves that fact. The
situation in the re ions is even worse. There are no women in the city council of Akhalkalaki. There are
few opportunities for women in the re ions. have or ani ed several meetin s in our community. urin
these meetin s have observed that the majority of the women are not informed of their ri hts and they

Talk - shows

omen ote

ive of our omen Community eaders are journalists who help produce relevant, interestin , and important monthly talk shows for each of our partner
television stations in Akhaltsikhe, Akhalkalaki, Borjomi, Marneuli and Ninotsminda.
Gender e uality and related women s issues are particularly important in these re ions. These talk shows
make it possible for women to talk honestly about
their speci c problems and needs. nvited uests are
local overnment representatives and relevant nonovernmental or ani ations, teachers, psycholo ists,
doctors and interested citi ens.
Our journalists produced talk shows last year, all of which were translated and broadcast in Armenian, A eri,
and Geor ian in all ve participatin television statinso as well as uploaded onto our website, mediacentri. e.
Nona Samkharad e,
oman Community eader and journalist, Marneuli T
or me as a journalist, bein a member of an initiative roup of omen Community eaders is very important
because the project ets women involved in the political arena and boosts women s participation and con dence.
The oal of empowerin women and encoura in their involvement in local overnment cannot be achieved
without media support. t is also important to increase the sensitivity of the citi ens.
owever, many people are not yet ready to talk publicly about women s labor ri hts, early marria es especially
in Marneuli , women s reproductive health, and women s involvement in decision-makin processes. Many issues need to be brou ht to society s attention and discussed. t is important to encoura e society to be in talkin
about these issues.
Also, would like to say that have rown as a journalist because of the communication with the variety of
omen eaders from the different municipalities. t has been a reat e perience for me. Throu h this project
will always be able to feel the pulse of the process that enhances women s involvement in political processes.

Ms. Surmanid e,
oman Community eader and journalist, Channel Nine, Akhaltsikhe
t has been very important and interestin for me to work on the Talk-Shows. worked on news stories before and
rarely prepared topics about ender issues. Only for women s days did we work on materials related to women.
After the project was launched, we have be un to actively cover ender-related issues.
As a journalist, attend the meetin s or ani ed by my collea ues. The participants often complain that nobody
is interested in their problems. think this project has contributed to breakin some of their stereotypes as well
as the society s. see the chan e happenin . omen are more active and talk publicly about painful problems in
the open air.
Ru ana Mkrtchyan,
oman Community eader and journalist, Ninotsminda T , arvana
Over the past ve months, the Talk-Show omen Choose has become very popular in Ninotsminda. The TalkShow is supportin the local population to become more active. hen we rst started, women were reluctant to
participate in our pro rams. After a few pro rams were released, however, we were able to attract more uests for
our Talk Shows. Most importantly, they have become more open.
omen have be un to speak publicly about
their problems whereas earlier they would only discuss these issues within their closest circle of friends.

of this project are trainin s for our omen Community eaders. eti

led an informative discussion about the importance of citi en participation in overnment formation, about the purpose and essence of elections and le islative chan es. The second day of the workshop was led
by Nino Bibileishvili, the coordinator of NGO air Elections and was
devoted to discussin the importance of women s active participation in

Teona upunia, National emocratic nstitue, discussed how we perceive women in our society. She also discussed the importance of becomin a woman leader,
what it means, leadership types, conductin ne otiations and how to resolve con icts. Ms. upunia
provided the participants with comprehensive information relatin to the role of leaders, speci cally
the importance of women leaders, in our society.

was also very useful for us that the trainin s were in Georian, En lish and Russian lan ua es so besides Geor ian we
prepared our presentations in En lish and Russian.
urin the project we met with representatives of the local
overnment. This meetin was very productive as we discussed Borjomi s problems, ways to solve them, and then
wrote a little project, with which we tried to make at least

became unskilled workers cleanin houses, workin as street vendors, and down raded their work. owever, women earn
of what men earn and are seriously underrepresented in overnment. They often do
not vote or et involved in overnment, believin that their husbands and fathers will represent them. This
is especially true in the villa es and in the minority communities of Geor ia.
ast July the Media Center developed an initiative to encoura e minority women in and around the re ion
to vote and become politically active. Our pro ram, with support from N and the British Embassy, is now
empowerin women from different ethnic back rounds in the outlyin areas of Geor ia. The followin table

Our network is workin to ether, Geor ian, A eri, and Armenian women, sharin problems and results,
best practices and encoura in each other. owever, the women are becomin frustrated to discuss problems and are now searchin for solutions. Our ne t steps will be to encoura e women to become more

Our oun eader s Club, or ani ed this past summer, took the initiative to enable children with disabilities and their parents to attend the Borjomoba. The children with disabilities rarely o out of their homes

their parents was that they were not for otten, that the youth took the time to spend the day with them.
t was one of the most heartwarmin e periences for me to watch the smiles and hu s and joy e pressed
throu hout the day.
orkin with the Media Center has been an unfor ettable e perience
