Dear School Counseling Hiring Committee,

I am writing to recommend Susan Alejandre for a position as a school counselor in your district. As
the instructor of the Introduction to School Counseling and Learning, Achievement, & Instruction
classes, and as her practicum supervisor for San Diego State University, I taught and supervised
Susan over the last two years. Susans is extremely dedicated, professional, collaborative, and
compassionate, all characteristics that will make her a great school counselor.

During her practicum at Potter Junior High, Susan was involved in prevention and intervention
activities within Potters comprehensive school counseling program. Susan presented core
curriculum counseling lessons in the classroom on topics including college and career readiness,
anti-drugs and alcohol (Red Ribbon Week), and respect and anti-bullying. She facilitated
intentional guidance counseling groups focused on motivation and study skills, helping students
improve their grades. Within Potters Safe School Ambassador Program, Susan collaborated with a
teacher and small group of students to help them develop skills to reduce mistreatment on
campus and be positive role models amongst their peers. Susan also counseled students
individually, helping them process their feelings, set and monitor academic and behavior goals,
and/or develop solutions to problems. She also connected with the families of these students to
communicate any ongoing challenges and also celebrate successes. Susans calm and caring
demeanor helped her easily develop rapport with students and families to support their success.
As a student at San Diego State University, Susan was prepared, organized, and participatory. She
was always very thoughtful about the ideas and opinions she shared, while she also posed
questions to the group. Susan also has strong presentation skills, through creating engaging
PowerPoints and incorporating direct interactive instruction techniques into her presentations.
She has also demonstrated her commitment to professional development outside her general
courses of study through participating the in the CARES grant to support foster youth. Susans
strong academic record demonstrates another level of professionalism she brings to the school
counseling position.

As both a university instructor and a practicing school counselor, I recommend Susan Alejandre. I
believe she will be an excellent school counselor who will exhibit dedication, professionalism, and
collaboration when working with students, school personnel, and families. If there is any
additional information I can provide you about Susan, please feel free to contact me.

Respectfully submitted,

Danielle R. Duarte, M.S.
