Healthy Lifestyle
_____________________________________________________________________
Central Focus/Big Idea: Understanding how exercise helps maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Subject of this lesson: Science
Grade Level: 4th
NC Essential Standard(s):
4.L.2 Understand food and the benefits of vitamins, minerals and exercise.
4.L.2.2 Explain the role of vitamins, minerals and exercise in maintaining a healthy
body.
Unpacked: Students know that vitamins and minerals are found in healthy foods as well
as dietary supplements. Students also know that movement is essential to the growth,
development and maintenance of the human body and its systems.
Next Generation Science Standard(s):
Developing and Using Models- Modeling in 3-5 builds on K-2 experiences and
progresses to building and revising simple models and using models to represent
events and design solutions.
Develop a model using an analogy, example, or abstract representation to
describe a specific principle or design solution.
21st Century Skills:
Find and evaluate information: Recognize a need to learn more about how to
make healthier choices in order to help our bodies grow.
Communication skills: Listening actively to the teacher and observing how the
tootsie roll acts as our muscles.
Academic Language Demand
Language Function: In the table below highlight the one most important language
function for your lesson. Explain why you chose these.

Retell

Explain
Students should be able to retell/explain how exercise contributes to our health. They
will then be able to summarize their understanding by answering ten questions.
This is why we are able to touch our toes. When we loosen up our
muscles, they become more flexible.
Elaborate:
Students will be asked to take their tootsie roll and find an open space in the
room. They should be able to spread their arms out and not touch anyone. Once
this is done, they will be asked to jog in place for about 3 minutes while tightly
holding on to the tootsie roll. During this time, the teacher should be walking
around and motivating the students to continue jogging. (He/she may explain
how the experiment will not work if they don't follow the instructions.) After the 3
minutes are up, the teacher will ask them to once again try pulling it apart again.
The teacher will then ask:
What are some activities that involve exercise? Answers: Soccer, Tennis,
Dance, Football, etc.
What is something we could do to help loosen up our muscles? Answer:
Stretch
How many of you stretch before you exercise? (Raise hands)
The teacher will explain how exercising helps to loosen up our muscles and
makes us more flexible. It is important to stretch your muscles before exercising
in order to prevent them from tearing and/or other injuries.
How many of you are going to START stretching before you exercise so that
you don't pull a muscle? (Raise hands)
Evaluate:
The teacher will ask various questions about exercise and how it contributes to
our bodies growth in order to check for understanding. They will all be
about what was discussed in the slides. The students will answer one
question on their own white boards and hold them up when instructed
by the teacher. They are not allowed to put them down until the
teacher tells them they are right or wrong. If the get the answer wrong,
they will be instructed to try again. The process will repeat with every other
question. Answers may vary but questions may include:
What is it called when a runner has a utopian or happy feeling? Answer:
Runners high
True or False? The heart is a muscle? Answer: True
Aerobic exercises require what? Answer: Oxygen
What is an example of an Aerobic exercise? Answers: Soccer, Football,
Basketball, Running
What is the name of the chemical that is released during exercise?
Answer: Endorphins
Even if you work out, you still need to eat healthy because they
contain what? Answer: Vitamins and minerals
Milk helps build strong bones because it is full of calcium. Calcium is
a vitamin or mineral? Answer: Mineral
