Molecular Biology Lesson Plan
Healthy Lifestyle
_____________________________________________________________________
Central Focus/Big Idea: Understanding how exercise helps maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Subject of this lesson: Science
Grade Level: 4th
NC Essential Standard(s):
4.L.2 Understand food and the benefits of vitamins, minerals and exercise.
4.L.2.2 Explain the role of vitamins, minerals and exercise in maintaining a healthy
body.
Unpacked: Students know that vitamins and minerals are found in healthy foods as well
as dietary supplements. Students also know that movement is essential to the growth,
development and maintenance of the human body and its systems.
Next Generation Science Standard(s):
Developing and Using Models- Modeling in 3-5 builds on K-2 experiences and
progresses to building and revising simple models and using models to represent
events and design solutions.
Develop a model using an analogy, example, or abstract representation to
describe a specific principle or design solution.
21st Century Skills:
Find and evaluate information: Recognize a need to learn more about how to
make healthier choices in order to help our bodies grow.
Communication skills: Listening actively to the teacher and observing how the
tootsie roll acts as our muscles.
Academic Language Demand
Language Function: In the table below highlight the one most important language
function for your lesson. Explain why you chose these.

Explain

Students should be able to retell/explain how exercise contributes to our health. They
will then be able to summarize their understanding by answering ten questions.

Scientific Vocabulary: Exercise, aerobic, endorphins, muscles, vitamins, minerals

and calcium.

Instructional Objective: Students will be able to explain how a healthy lifestyle

contributes to their bodies growth.
Prior Knowledge (student): Students should be familiar with various forms of exercise.
Students should know that vitamins and minerals are found in healthy foods. They must
also be aware that they are important to our growth.
Content Knowledge (teacher): The teacher should understand how exercise is
beneficial to our body. He/she should be able to give explains of aerobic exercise, ways
to build strong muscles, work outs to become more flexible as well as be familiar with
endorphins.
Accommodations for special needs (individual and/or small group): During the
Engage, Explanation and Elaborate parts of the lesson, the students will be strategically
placed on the carpet to avoid any distractions. Those with a 504 Plan and IEP will be
placed near the teacher so that he/she can make sure they are on task and up to
speed. The teacher will walk around the room frequently to assist students when
needed.
Materials and Technology requirements: A class set of white boards, expo markers
and tootsie rolls that have been refrigerated. The teacher will need a smart board with
presentation. Extra tootsie rolls to give the students when they answer tough questions
correctly (optional).
Total Estimated Time: 30 minutes
Source of lesson: http://kidshealth.org/kid/stay_healthy/fit/work_it_out.html#cat120
Safety considerations: Students will be asked to find a spot around the room so that
they have enough space to spread out their arms and not touch anyone. This will be
done before they jog in place with a tootsie roll so that they don't hit anyone around
them.

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

Engage:
The teacher will tell the students that he/she wants to find out who is the most
flexible in the class. The students will be instructed to stand up and attempt to
touch their toes. They will then have a seat and the teacher will ask them:
What can you do to become more flexible? Answer: Stretch and Exercise
Did you know that students are required to get a minimum of 30 minutes of
physical activity a day? Answer: Yes or no
How do we incorporate that into our school day? Answer: Recess, maybe
even stretch breaks or PE class
The teacher will then explain that this is why he/she always tries to get students
up and moving during recess rather than sitting down.
Explore:
The teacher will provide each student with a refrigerated tootsie roll. They will
then be asked to attempt to pull the tootsie roll apart. It should be difficult for
them to do. After giving them some time to try, the teacher will ask the students:
Who had a difficult time pulling the tootsie roll apart? (Raise hands)
Why do you think it was so difficult? Answers: It was hard, refrigerated, cold.
The teacher will compare the tootsie roll to their muscles. He/she will ask the
students:
For those of you who were able to pull it apart, how can you relate that to
something that may happen while working out? Answer: Pulling a muscle
The teacher will explain that when you attempt to work out without warming up
your muscles, you could potentially pull/tear a muscle.
Explanation:
The teacher will explain to students the various ways that exercise is beneficial to
ones body and provide examples. He/she will also explain how important it is to
eat healthy foods in addition to getting physical activity. This is because they
provide your body with various vitamins and minerals.
Exercise makes your heart happy
A heart is a muscle that needs oxygen. Aerobic is a type of exercise that
requires oxygen.
Can you think of examples of aerobic exercises? Answers: Running,
Soccer, hockey, football, etc.
Runner's high is a utopian/happy feeling that we get when running
Exercise makes muscles stronger
Can you name some work outs that help build strong muscles? Answers:
Push-ups, Pull-ups, Tug of war
Can you think of a type of food or drink that helps build strong muscles?
Answer: Milk because it is high in calcium, which is a mineral
Exercise makes you feel good
Endorphins are a chemical released when exercising.
Exercise makes you flexible

This is why we are able to touch our toes. When we loosen up our
muscles, they become more flexible.

Elaborate:
Students will be asked to take their tootsie roll and find an open space in the
room. They should be able to spread their arms out and not touch anyone. Once
this is done, they will be asked to jog in place for about 3 minutes while tightly
holding on to the tootsie roll. During this time, the teacher should be walking
around and motivating the students to continue jogging. (He/she may explain
how the experiment will not work if they don't follow the instructions.) After the 3
minutes are up, the teacher will ask them to once again try pulling it apart again.
The teacher will then ask:
What are some activities that involve exercise? Answers: Soccer, Tennis,
Dance, Football, etc.
What is something we could do to help loosen up our muscles? Answer:
Stretch
How many of you stretch before you exercise? (Raise hands)
The teacher will explain how exercising helps to loosen up our muscles and
makes us more flexible. It is important to stretch your muscles before exercising
in order to prevent them from tearing and/or other injuries.
How many of you are going to START stretching before you exercise so that
you don't pull a muscle? (Raise hands)
Evaluate:
The teacher will ask various questions about exercise and how it contributes to
our bodies growth in order to check for understanding. They will all be
about what was discussed in the slides. The students will answer one
question on their own white boards and hold them up when instructed
by the teacher. They are not allowed to put them down until the
teacher tells them they are right or wrong. If the get the answer wrong,
they will be instructed to try again. The process will repeat with every other
question. Answers may vary but questions may include:
What is it called when a runner has a utopian or happy feeling? Answer:
Runners high
True or False? The heart is a muscle? Answer: True
Aerobic exercises require what? Answer: Oxygen
What is an example of an Aerobic exercise? Answers: Soccer, Football,
Basketball, Running
What is the name of the chemical that is released during exercise?
Answer: Endorphins
Even if you work out, you still need to eat healthy because they
contain what? Answer: Vitamins and minerals
Milk helps build strong bones because it is full of calcium. Calcium is
a vitamin or mineral? Answer: Mineral

One way to become more flexible is by doing what? Answer:

Stretching, Exercising
What can happen to your muscles if you don't stretch? Answer:
They can tear
Students are required to get a minimum of how many minutes of
physical activity a day? Answer: 30
While asking ten questions about the lesson, the teacher will be responsible for
writing down which students missed which question so that they know what to go
back and review. 8 out of 10 questions answered correctly demonstrates
proficiency.

To be complete after the lesson is taught as appropriate
