A Day for Science (including Lake Lanier)

Monday, April 27 / Meet at 9:15 a.m. / Program is from 9:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Grades 3 and above (requires 14 students per group to hold)
We will kick off our A Day for Science at Elachee Nature Center in Gainesville, GA.
Older Elementary Grades (3-5th) will participate in Stream Ecology. They will discover a watershed,
explore a habitat and become familiar with biodiversity within the habitat. Students will determine the
volume running through the stream, search for aquatic animals, measure the pH balance and discuss the
effects of pollution and other relevant issues on our streams. A wet experience!
Middle and High School Grades will participate in the Planetarium Program where they will explore the
solar system and learn about stars and their mechanics. Students will experience star and planetary
motion, phases of the moon, and lunar eclipses and why they occur.
After our morning session, we will eat lunch (bring it from home) then take a short drive to Lake Lanier,
where we will board the Chota Princess II catamaran as we explore Lake Sidney Lanier. Sample plankton
communities, collect sediments, conduct turbidity tests and determine pH and dissolved oxygen levels.
