Rolihlahla, a tribal name. It was not until Rolihlahla was in primary school that his name

Nelson Mandela Political/Adversity

A. Nelson Mandela Political/Adversity

Quotes: "In 1944, Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) and worked
with fellow party members, including Oliver Tambo, to establish its youth league, the
ANCYL.""Mandela helped lead the ANCs 1952 Campaign for the Defiance of Unjust
Laws, traveling across the country to organize protests against discriminatory policies,
and promoted the manifesto known as the Freedom Charter, ratified by the Congress of
the People in 1955. "
Comment: After the 1948 election Mandela's commitment to the ANC grew. The 1948
election was a major turning point as it was a victory for the Afrikaner-dominated
National Party. After this election a new government system called apartheid was
introduced. Apartheid was an offical system that limited the basic rights of non-whites
and maintained a white-minority rule. Nelson's commitment to activism against aparthied
and white-minority rule grew stronger in the years following the 1948 in which apathied

Nelson Mandela Contribution

A. Nelson Mandela Contribution

Quotes: "Madibas legacy includes the establishment of a constitutional democracy in
South Africa, and the replication of these values and ideals across Africa. He will be
remembered as an ardent protagonist of pan-Africanism who went out of his way to help
solve some of Africas most devastating conflicts. Fifty years after the formation of the
African Union and the Organisation of African Unity before it, Madibas belief in a
politically and economically independent continent remains a priority for African leaders
today."
Comment: Mandela helped to free South Africa from the oppression for non-whites
caused by apartheid. His work and contribution inspired many and lead the movement

B. Nelson Mandela Contribution

Quotes: "Flaws, nevertheless, abound today, stemming from corruption in all its
creeping manifestations. These could in time destroy the edifice Mandela built.
But they will not undermine Mandelas place in history, which is more durable
than any political construct. As with Abraham Lincoln, his deeper legacy lies in
the example he has left for succeeding generations."
Comment: Arguably Nelson Mandela's greatest acheivement is not that he helped end the
apartheid rule in South Africa. It is that he gave an example to other countries that
democratic and equal rule is possible.

C. Nelson Mandela Contribution

Quotes: "In 1994, four years after his release from prison and the end of his fight for
equality, Mandela was fittingly elected Prime Minister of South Africa. It was a historical
day for South Africa, with both races finally united with equality. He remained in the
post for 5 years before stepping down in 1999. Since then Mandela has remained
relatively out of the spotlight, but is still a crucial figurehead for equality all over the
world."
Comment: Nelson Mandela changed South Africa for the better as he was the first ever
president of South Africa who was elected democratically. He lead the movement for
other nations in southern Africa to establish equal and democratic rule.

D. Nelson Mandela Contribution

Quotes: "He taught the world what activism really means: With no fear in his heart,
Mandela stood up to those who sought to oppress others. He was willing to give up his
own life for the principles of democracy. Speaking at his own defense case in Pretoria in
1964"
Comment: Nelson Mandela's work and contribution showed oppressed people all over
the world that you can stage protests and get where you need to go. He also showed
people that you could do it without violent protests.
