Locomotor and Object Control Stations

Grade Level: 5th & 6th

Severity of Disabilities: Moderate to Severe
Number of Students: 6
Setting: APE room
Equipment: numbered polyspots, balance beam, colored balls (red, green, yellow, blue),
corresponding colored container, colored polyspots (red, green, yellow, blue), Scool Moves
curriculum, 8 bean bags (2 red, 2 blue, 2 yellow, 2 green), chart with corresponding colors (they are
numbered 1-4).
Topic/Unit: Locomotor and Object Control
Duration: 30 minutes
Modification(s): During the warm-up, students will be modeled the music movements by the teacher
and instructional aides. The students will use a visual schedule to rotate from station to station. There
are 4 stations, each lasting 4:50. The time at each station will provide more structure for the students.
Each student will complete all four stations. Cross curricular elements are embedded into each station.
Other modifications and support will be addressed as needed, depending upon the students skill level.
Differentiated Instruction: Instructional Assistants will help students with locomotor and object
control skill such as balancing, throwing. The instructional aides work to facilitate the objective of the
station, as well as provide prompting or interventions so the student can complete the skill(s) at each
station. There are 1-on-1 instructional aides in the class. Lastly, sequential visual cues, as well as
verbal and physical prompts will be given as needed.
California Physical Education Content Standards
Body Management
Standard 1.1: Perform simple small-group balance stunts by distributing weight and base of
Support.
Fitness Concepts
Standard 3.1 Demonstrate how to warm up muscles and joints before running, jumping, kicking,
throwing, and striking.
Flexibility
Standard 3.6: Perform flexibility exercises that will stretch particular muscle areas for given physical
activities.
Manipulative Skills
1.6 Throw an object accurately and with applied force, using the underhand, overhand, and sidearm
movement (throw) patterns.
Self-Responsibility
5.1 Participate productively in group physical activities.

IEP Goals:
By 3/4/16, STUDENT will be able to walk a 4 inch balance beam a distance of 4 feet
independently 2/3 attempts, on 2/3 trials, as measured by the APE Teacher.
By 3/4/16, STUDENT will be able to throw and hit a large target from 8 feet away on 2/3
attempts, on 2/3 trials, as measured by the APE Teacher.
By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
1. Participate in a appropriate warm-up and cool-down exercises.
2. Balance while walking forward on a narrow (4 inch), elevated surface.
3. Correspond hands and feet to colors while crossing midline.
4. Participate in regular physical activity.
5. Better understand the concepts of left and right.
Lesson Description:
According to the California Content PE standards it is important for children to development
locomotor and object control skills, balance and bilateral coordination in order to participate in
physical activities as well as fitness testing. The goal of this 6tyh grade lesson (Locomotor and Object
Control Stations) is for the students to display balance and bilateral coordination as they practice their
locomotor and object control skills as engage in each station.
Lesson: Students will follow their numbered schedule (1-4) to rotate through the locomotor and object
control stations.
Set-up: When students enter the classroom and sit on a number in a circle. The number will provide
them with a spot for spatial awareness. They will stay on their numbered circle for the stretching and
warm-up activities. Each center is numbered and rotations will move in a clockwise manner. The
stations are spread out to give enough room and to minimize distractions. After each student competes
each of the four rotations, they will return to the numbered circles for the cool-down activity.
Background: Students have already been working on their locomotor and object control skills before.
The concept of a station rotation is a new concept for them, yet the structure provided should
minimizer any inappropriate behaviors or lack of understanding as to what is expected in the activity.

LEARNING ACTIVITY
(20 mins):

COOL-DOWN
(5 min):

Students will perform simple stretches and simple warm-up exercises set to music.

Students will be given a schedule (1-4), in which they start at that station. They rotate
clockwise from station to station. The stations are as follows:
Station 1: Scool Moves- The students will move to the area in which the object is
in on the chart. The letter t is in different places. The student either jumps or
moves to the correct spot. The objective is for them to move from top to bottom
and left to right. As the students move to the correct spot, they spell their name on
letter at a time.
Station 2: A modified Twister game. The student will spin the Twister board and
then look at the card to determine if they place their left or right hand or foot on the
corresponding color. After they have place one on, they spin again.
Station 3: Students pick a colored ball out of the bucket, walk the balance beam
and place it with the corresponding color.
Station 4: A throwing for accuracy station. The student will pick up the colored
bean bag they want to throw at the corresponding colored targets. The colors are
vertical and are scored from 1-4, 1 at the lowest (easiest) colored circle and 4 at the
highest (hardest) colored circle.

Yoga with relaxing flute music. The students will participate in various yoga exercise while
providing visual cues and modeling. Behaviors should be decreased and it should be calming
experience before they transition back to class.

Assessment:
1.Performance of each student to follow verbal directions and demonstrate motor skills coordination.
2. Students ability to rotate through four stations in a clockwise manner.
3. Students ability to recognize name.
4. Students ability to perform simple addition.
5. Social skills to work with other students to complete a task.
