examineIndianascontroversialReligiousFreedomAct.Afterwelookattheactfromall
perspectives,weweretowritearesponseandexpressouropinionsofthematter.

Iselectedthisitembecauseitisstillrelevantasoftoday(April2015)andwasona
subjectthatIwaspassionateabout.Thisassignmentchallengedmebecauseweweresupposedto
actuallyexaminethelawitself,notjustregurgitatetheopinionsofsomeonewithalargeplatform
forcommunicationorgraspingfordetailsofsomethingyoureadonsocialmedia.Byactually
readingthelawitselfyouseethatitdoesnotexplicitlyspeakabouthomosexualityoranyother
groupthathasbeendiscriminatedagainst.FromthisassignmentIlearnedthedetailsofthelaw
itselfinsteadofjustwhatIvehearpeopletalkingabout.Fromreadingtheactuallegislature,I
wasabletoseethatthehamartiawiththislawisthevaguenatureofitandthatitcouldbe
interpretedinsomanydifferentways.IhonestlybelievethatIcompletedthisassignmenttothe
bestofmyabilitybecauseIdidmyresearchandtriedtolookatthematterfromevery
perspectiveinsteadofgettingcaughtupinthepassionandemotionofthedebateasmanypeople
have.ItriedtoremainneutralwhenreadingthelawandIbelievethatisthebestthingthatyou
candowhenexaminingsomethinglikealaw.

IndianasReligiousFreedomAct

Recently,IndianapassedtheReligiousFreedomAct.Thisactspurposeistoprotect
theindividualsreligiousfreedomwhichseemslikeagoodideatheoretically,buttherearesome
majorflaws.Therehasbeensuchanintensebacklashthatnotevenaweekaftertheactwas
passed,theystartedrewritingit.Indianaisnotthefirststatetogetalawlikethis,butitisthe
firstonetocausesuchanuproar.
Becausethelawwaswritteninsuchavaguefashion,ithasalmostbeenleftupto
interpretationand,aswithanything,peoplewillturnthingsintowhatevertheywantthemtobe.
Withthisreligiousfreedomact,individualshavebeensayingthathomosexualityisagainsttheir
religion,andthustheirbusinessshouldnotbesubjectedtothem.Thisinterpretationofthelaw
hasthebeentherootofmostofthebacklash,asmembersandalliesoftheLGBTQcommunity
areappalledbytherefusalofservicetoqueerfolk.
Somequeerindividualsareangryabouttheactwhileothersseeitinamorepositive
light.Becausetheantigayestablishmentsarebroadcastingtheirrefusaltoservehomosexuals,
queerfolkandalliesknowwhichestablishmentstoavoid.Afterall,whywouldtheywanttogive

theirserviceandmoneytohomophobes?Inthelongrun,Ithinkthiswillonlyhurtthe
aforementionedestablishmentsfinanciallybecausenoqueerindividual,ally,orjustgenerally
decentpersonwouldwanttogivetheirmoneytoahomophobicbigot.
Manyoftheindividualswhoareoutragedbythislawhavedecidedtopintheblameon
GovernorMikePencewhohelpedpassthelaw.AlthoughIdonotagreewithMikePences
personalbeliefsorsupporthimasagovernor,Idonotfeelthathisistoblameforpeoples
responsetothelaw.Ibelievethatthefaultlieswithinourbigotedcommunityratherthanone
specificperson,althoughformanythatisamoredifficultconcepttograsp.Peopletendtowant
onepersontotakeouttheirangeron,wheninrealityitsthehomophobicshopownerstoblame
forinterpretingthelawinsuchahatefulway.Ifwecancometotermswiththefactthatsociety
istoblameratherthanoneindividual,wecanstarthealingtheproblemfromtheinsideand
hopefullyeliminatehomophobiaandotherformatsofdiscriminationforfuturegenerations.
Ibelievethatthelawitselfisanissue,althoughitisnotinherentlydiscriminatory.Iam
gladthatIndianaofficialscanseethewaysinwhichthelawisproblematicandareworking
towardsmendingthoseissues.Hopefullytherevisedversionofthislawwillbemorespecific
andwillnotmakeitsoeasyforpeopletouseitasjustificationtodiscriminateagainstpeopleof
allkinds.
