TWS 3
Short Range Learning Objectives/Standards for Unit
Weather Unit: Second Grade Earth Science
Main Objective:
Using a variety of methods, students will be able to identify various types of weather conditions, explain those conditions using
weather terminology, show examples through illustrations, and record data from daily weather conditions, with 90% accuracy.
This second grade unit includes multiple weather activities that I will implement using a variety of instructional strategies,
including acting out the water cycle and a tornado drill. Because my students enjoy activities where they can all do things as a class,
the water cycle and tornado drill will be done as a class and will include the whole group.
SC Science Standard 2-3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of daily and seasonal weather conditions.

Unit Objectives

Main Assessment of Objective

The assessment will be a 3question quiz and students will
be required to identify the
weather from pictures shown
(For example, if the picture is
of two girl outside playing in
the sun, the students should be
able to tell me that it is sunny
and that the temperature is
probably warm). Students will
be required to answer as a
class.

Accommodations
Adaptations
I have four ESOL students that
need extra help with work and
understanding directions. I will
repeat the directions to them
individually and be available to
help them when needed. I have two
students with IEPs and, if they are
in the room at the time, I will make
sure I give them clear directions
and am readily available to help
them when needed. Extra time on
work will also be allowed.

to show their understanding of
daily and seasonal weather
conditions through drawings,
with 100% accuracy.
2-3: The student will
demonstrate an understanding
of daily and seasonal weather
conditions.
2-3.3: Illustrate the weather
conditions of different seasons.

Objective: Students will be able

to provide a description of the
water cycle and recall weather
terminology in the description,
when prompted, with 90%
accuracy.
2-3.2: Recall weather
terminology (including
temperature, wind direction,
wind speed, and precipitation as
rain, snow, sleet, and hail).

weather conditions, with 90%
accuracy.
2-3.4: Carry out procedures to

weather conditions (including
temperature, precipitation
amounts, wind speed as
measured on the Beaufort scale,
and wind direction as measured
with a windsock or wind vane).
2-3.5: Use pictorial weather
symbols to record observable sky
conditions.
*Math Connection: This lesson
will include charting the weather
and we will record the weather
everyday for a week. After our
weekly chart is done I will ask
questions like, how many more
days, or less days to assess how
attentive the students have been.

Culminating Activity: The culminating activity will include making a chart, as a class, and it will include weather terminology, the
water cycle, different types of weather, and the four seasons. Every student will be responsible for something on the chart and we
will present it to another second grade class. Every student will have a chance to read or explain a picture on the chart. At the end of
the day, I will hang the chart outside the classroom on the wall.
Overall Assessment: The overall assessment will be a unit test on all of the things taught and learned. Students will also be required
to draw something that they learned about weather and write one sentence to explain their drawing.
The objectives of this unit are developmentally and age appropriate because the unit is aligned with the Long Range Plan and
the South Carolina standards. It also fits in well with all of the cold weather we have been experiencing. The students enjoy sharing
their experiences about the weather and the recent things they have witnessed. This unit will allow the all of the students to be and
feel like they are an important asset to the classroom. I will be sure to allow every student to participate in every activity included in
this unit. The students in this class enjoy active activities and that is just the types of activities I plan to include over the course of
this unit.
