ZIPPER
A device consisting of two lines of small metal or plastic teeth that can be interlocked to fasten
pieces of clothing, bags or other items. This type of fastener was rst designed by Whitcomb L.
Judson, an American engineer. It was called the clasp-locker and was patented on August 29, 1893. In
the same year, Judson exhibited his device at the Chicago Worlds Fair. He and Lewis Walker founded a
company (the Universal Fastener Company) to manufacture the product, but they never succeeded in
selling the invention. Judson died in 1909, before the clasp-locker became famous.
Later, in 1913, the zipper was improved by Gideon Sundback (a former employee of Judson).
Sundback called it hookless fastener and was more successful than Judson. He sold the device to the
US Army, which used zippers on the soldiers clothes during World War I.B.F. Goodrich manufactured
boots with Sundbacks fastener and invented the word zipper in 1923. The inspiration for the name
came from the zipping sound that zippers make when they open and close.
