Who Am I Paper
Dr. Harris
Who Am I?
Ever since kindergarten I knew I wanted to be a teacher. For the longest time up
until high school I wanted to be an art teacher. It later switched to Music Education
to now where I am today, aspiring to be a teacher for young children while still
incorporating music and art into my lessons. After speaking with my middle school
art teacher, she ensured me that my hard work was consistent all my life, and that I
would accomplish my dreams. She did this by saying, I always thought you were a
self-starter and self-motivated. You were always willing to put in any amount of work
to insure success. I remember you functioned as a peer teacher at times when you
were around some of the younger students.
I was a person to always hold my aspirations up high, even as a young child. I
found multiple tasks as a way to challenge myself, therefore becoming a multitasker
at young age. Creativity has always played a key role in every project that I have
ever done in my academic years, and I am that person who would go above and
beyond to make the grade. After asking Mrs. Berna, my art teacher, which qualities
stood out to her from my personality she replied that I always seemed to have a
positive attitude, seldom got bent out of shape. Also, I always had a great deal of
self-confidence about my work and my approach and dealings with others.
On top of interviewing Mrs. Berna, I also interviewed my mom and grandmother.
One thing that was really neat was how my teacher related my mom and gram into
my future, as well as my mother incorporating Mrs. Berna. My mom said, Your
entire perspective changed as you went to sixth grade and you met Mrs. Berna. She

brought out the artistic side in you. From that point on you went above and beyond
any project. I knew that you were very well rounded and had an extremely artistic
side. You volunteered for anything that was drawing like painting on windows, and
painting a mural at cedar creek park. My mother continued how she believed I
transformed to where I am today by saying that, the music side of you came out
when you hit high school. You signed up in ninth grade for the musical and you liked
it so much that you wanted to be the lead.
Determination is a quality of me, which I can pride myself on. After talking to
three different people it reinforced to myself that no matter what the task, when I
put my mind to something I can accomplish my goals. My mom even said that she
could honestly say that no matter what you do you give 150 percent, and the more
you have on your plate, although sometimes stressful, the better you do. This
relates to me in the past, and especially the present for the simple point of how
many credits I have decided to take on not only in this semester, but also in
semesters past. Currently I am enrolled in twenty-five credits and I have been
successful so far with my classes.
My personal traits have also been a part of me which I feel are not only great for
an early childhood teacher, but as well as a principal. My grandmother said, you
are a very contentious person, organized with your school work, loving, caring, and
a very giving person. My mother described me as a funloving, energetic,
determined, dont take no for an answer, never give up kind of person. Finally, my
art teacher said that I, always seemed to have a positive attitude, seldom got bent
out of shape, always had a great deal of self-confidence about my work and my
approach and dealings with others. All three of these responses correlate to my
hopeful profession one day. I am proud of who I am so far and plan to become the

best educator, mentor, and person that I can be as I develop through my years at
Seton Hill University and beyond.
Although I may not have been a teacher at a young age in some peoples eyes, I
know that I can accomplish my dreams. My grandmother told me that I was a very
outgoing child and always thought that I would own my own business. This is ironic
to me because in the back of my mind I have always wanted to teach lessons for
music privately in my own home. She told me that she never saw me really working
under someone else; that I didnt like to be told what to do by anyone. She said, If I
would tell you one way to do it, you would listen, but you had your own way of
doing things.
My family had many aspirations for me. My mother thought I would be an art
major, my grandmother thought business, and was hoping that I would become an
auctioneer like her. She also said that she could see me in music because from the
time I was little I always wanted the microphone. Finally, my teacher said that she
knew I had an interest in art, but by high school she was convinced I was veering
toward music. She never had an opinion on whether or not I would become a
teacher, but stated, I definitely knew you would have the necessary skills to tackle
anything, up to and including rocket science or brain surgery.
Some final attributes of myself that I learned to be reinforced from the interviews
were that people viewed me as an extremely organized young person. My teacher
had admired me because I spent my free time working in her classroom when I
returned to the middle school from my high school classes compared to others who
wasted the time away. I always wanted to be ahead in my schoolwork and stayed on
top of my tasks. This is a trait that I find can be very helpful in college, as well as
one day in the education field.

As a closing note I asked Mrs. Berna after working in the education system for a
career, if she felt that I would be a successful teacher, and if there was any advice
that she could give me for my future. Little did I know, her response summed up all
of the interviews as well as giving me more of a drive than before towards my goals.
I think you will be very successful. I know it will sound trite, but be a lifelong
learner. Everyone you meet can teach you something. Your grandma was an
entrepreneur. Your mom raised three children who all were educationally successful.
Ive learned things from my students. When they did projects in a new and unique
way, I often altered my lessons to include those new aspects. This approach can
help you grow exponentially as a teacher. Treat all of life as a classroom, and
yourself as the student.
