Chapter One: Aspects of Holistic Child Development

Holistic development sees the child as a tiny person:

Physically , emotionally , intellectually , socially , morally, culturally and spritiually.

We study patterns of growth which are guidelines for normal development.


Developmental norms (the pattern of growth that children should follow) are also called
milestones.

Physical Development = is the way in which the body increase in skill.


Gross Motor Skill = the use of the large muscles. Example= throwing
Fine manipulative Skills= the use of hands and fingers muscles. Example= writing
Sensory Development- vision , hearing , touch , smell , taste , proprioception .
and PROPRIOCEPTION= the sense that tells people where the moving parts of the body (arms
and legs) are in relation to the rest of the body.

Cognitive and language Development


intellectual = development of the mind
Perception = helps us understand what we see, touch , feel hear, etc.

Language devolpment
receptive Speech= what a person understands.
Expressive Speech = the words the person produce.
Articulation = the persons actual pronunciation of words.

Emotional and social Development

Emotional = the development of feelings about oneself, towards other people and
the development of self-esteem - - and self-concept .
Social development = how the child relates to other people.

The Importance of Play


Play provides opportunity for a child to:

Develop confidence and self-esteem


Use creativity and imagination.
Develop reading , thinking -solving skills
How to control their emotions.
Learn social skills.



ICT and Child Development
Two features of ICT resources (technology): Give examples of each

Communicate information

Cameras.
Television.
Internet.
Mobile phones.

Promote interactivity
Computers.
Musical keyboards.
Activity centres.
Childrens websites.


IMPORTANT :
Not all people(educationalists) agree with the importance of using technology
with very young children (nursery school age). Some believe it is a good idea,
others believe it is a bad idea.
