Branded
Brilliance
For me, one of the most enjoyable aspects of being a jewellery
retailer in Canada has always been interaction with my colleagues.
Although I’m based out of Calgary and Vancouver, I enjoy traveling
across the country and abroad to see what the industry has to offer.
In fact, I was recently asked to sit on the judging board for Canadian
Jeweller’s Excellence in Design Competition where it was great to
see the fantastic work of designers from coast-to-coast. If you’re
not in Toronto for the award ceremony in September, look for the
November issue for a special feature on the competition.
I feel the real professionals in our industry are an endangered
species in today’s retail environment — it is a particular pleasure for
me to know Andrea Hopson, Tiffany’s VP in charge of Canada; she
is one of those true professionals. The first time I met her, we found
we shared an appreciation and passion for fine jewellery, Canadian
diamonds and the great watch brand Patek Philippe (one of the
brands we carry and the only brand aside from their own house brand
watch that was carried by Tiffany). We also served on the board of
Jewellers Vigilance Canada (JVC) together, and Andrea accepted the
term as president while I was still on the board in 2005.
I have always admired Tiffany & Co. as a very fine jewellery
house. I think a successful brand like that inspires confidence in
other retailers here in Canada and abroad. Andrea has done an
amazing job here at Tiffany Canada. She is someone other retailers
can learn from — even those of us who have been around much
longer than she has!

Antwerp is one of the mostly densely populated cities in Europe, so there are

well-known Belgian beers. The cost of living is higher than in most Canadian

A History of Design
Tiffany’s secret weapon is its dedication to good design. The company
has always had a design director. John Loring has held the post for 30
years and is only the third design director since the company’s inception
in 1837. The first was Louis Comfort Tiffany. The second was Van Day
Truex, former head of the Parsons School of Design, who held the position
for 23 years. Jean Schlumberger, under his reign, created his most iconic
designs, including the colourful paillonné enamel bracelets with 18k gold
ribbing. His floral-inspired jewels used gemstones that were only just
becoming available for the first time. His trademark style was a surreal
and extravagant interpretation of nature.

Although each Tiffany designer has a distinctive style, what they all have
in common is a penchant for whimsy: Picasso’s graffiti pieces and her
playful, squiggly X’s and O’s demonstrate a playful flair; Schlumberger’s
colourful sea creatures and his famous ‘Bird on a Rock’ introduced a new
genre that might be defined as “high-end cute”; Peretti’s elegant use of
sterling silver and her elevation of beans and lopsided hearts to the level
of fine jewellery make her pieces iconic; and Gehry’s postmodern array of
shapes and materials redefine the notion of jewellery as sculpture.
Going Forward
Despite the brand’s illustrious history, Hopson is inspired by the new
wave of Tiffany consumers. Speaking of her experiences in the store, she
beams at a throng of young girls crowded around the showcases of silver
charms and bracelets, knowing they represent a new generation of Tiffany
devotees. For the moment, they’re getting their fix on the $250-and-up
collections in sterling, which in fact, make up 34% of Tiffany & Co.’s
annual sales. (Gemstone jewellery accounts for 26%, diamond rings 14%,
and non-gemstone gold or platinum jewellery 10%). Great design, Hopson
points out, does not always mean outrageous prices. [CJ]
Proud Lineage
The company went out of Tiffany family hands in 1955 when it was bought by
industrialist Walter Hoving, known as a fanatic for good taste. When he interviewed
buyers, he would place several objects on a table and cover them with a cloth. At
the end of the interview, he would remove the cloth and say: “Put the ones that are
well designed on the right side of the table and the ones that are badly designed
on the left.” Then he would exit the room for 15 minutes, leaving the would-be
buyer sealed his fate. The instruction Hoving gave to his newly assembled team of
tastemakers was: “Design what you think is beautiful and don’t worry about selling
it. That’s our job.” By all accounts, it was a job well done. Between 1961 — when
Hoving acquired full control of Tiffany — and 1970, sales tripled. William Chaney
took over as Chairman in 1980, and later led the Tiffany’s leveraged buyout from the
Avon Company, which had acquired it from Hoving. He led an IPO in 1987, taking
the Company public. When Chaney retired in 1993, longtime Tiffany executive
Michael Kowalski took over as Chairman, maintaining a Tiffany management style
that demonstrates an ongoing respect for the sanctity of design.
