Competency 001: The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the

development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared

and supported by the school community.
Throughout this semester I have had many opportunities to interact with teachers, the administrative
team, parents, and students. One way in which I was able to articulate our campus vision, was
through a variety of meetings that I held with teachers in regards to instruction on how to get our
students academically to the next level. I also held two parent assemblies where we discussed
attendance and the importance that it has in a childs academic future. Additionally, I participated in
a marketing class for school leaders at Rice University where our main focus was creating a plan to
market our campus to the community. The focal point of this plan was our mission and what made
our school the best choice for the children that live in our community.
Competency 002: The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members of
the school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and mobilize resources to promote
student success.
Being able to effectively communicate with the school community is something that can either
make or break the school, which is why I believe this is a very important role of a principal. As part
of my internship requirements, I had the opportunity to participate in the Admission, Review and
Dismissal meetings, administrative meetings, grade-chair meetings, one-on-one meetings with
teacher and grade level PLC meetings. In those meetings, I was able to play an active role in
providing feedback, gathering information, and giving teachers the support and resources they were
requesting. I have also had the opportunity to meet with several parents during teacher-parent
conferences as well as attendance assemblies. During those meetings I have played a key role by
being able to listen to the needs and requests of parents, students, and teachers. In many occasions, I
have been able to respond to those needs, especially when they benefited students directly. Other
ways in which I participated in communicating with the school community included creating and
translating the monthly newsletter, creating flyers, contacting parents on a regular basis to discuss
attendance patters, holding attendance assemblies for students, and making end of the day
announcements in regards to attendance incentives.
Competency 003: The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical and
legal manner.
This past semester, I have been faced with different situations which have required me to act with
fairness, independently of my biases. I experienced this when I had to conduct several walkthroughs
for a teacher who consistently failed to follow school rules in regards to student supervision.
Eventually I conducted an investigation and had to follow up with that teacher. In my investigation
I stated only the facts and treated the individual in a very cordial manner (with integrity). The legal
steps were followed in this process and the teacher decided to resign at the end of the investigation.
On a regular basis, I conduct myself in the same way that we expect our teachers and students to
behave. I try my best to set a good example by following our school rules and treating everyone
with the same respect I expect from others.

Competency 004: The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of curricula
and strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction,
resources, and assessment; and promote the use of varied assessments to measure student
performance.
Part of my role as an appraiser consists of meeting with teachers in order to analyze student data.
After every district benchmark (DLA) I have meet one-on-one with appraises, in order to identify
areas strength and growth. With those teachers we look at the areas where students might have had
misconceptions based on the type of response they selected and then we discussed a plan of action
as to how those concepts will be retaught. Using the scope and sequence, we map out the days and
resources that will be used in order to address students academic needs. The last step of the process
is monitoring, which happens regularly. You must always inspect, what you expect.
Competency 005: The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an instructional
program and a campus culture that are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.
Since I have the opportunity to appraise teachers under the Teacher Appraisal and Development
System, I have had the opportunity to meet with 12 teachers in order to create Individualized
Professional Development Plans, better known as an IPDP. I sat with each teacher individually in
order to create a plan that was based on the teachers needs and areas of professional growth. In
addition to creating this plan, I have also met with all my teachers to check on the progress of the
plan and the takeaways they have gotten from their previously selected activities. I am currently
conducting informal and formal walkthroughs in order to observe the instructional practices that
teacher decided to implement as a result of their professional development activities
. Competency 006: The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and development
system to improve the performance of all staff members, select and implement appropriate models
for supervision and staff development, and apply the legal requirements for personnel management.
In my current role as an appraiser, I have had the opportunity to conducted at least two thirty
minute observations and three ten minute walkthroughs on each one of my twelve appraises. I have
then met with each individual teacher in order to provide feedback both constructive and positive
on at least two occasions. Additionally I have worked with teacher individually in order to create
Individualized Professional Development Plans (IPDP), which are tailored to their needs. I have
monitored the implementation of the IPDPs through ongoing formal and informal walkthroughs. I
also held middle of the year conferences with each one of my teachers to review their scores and
ways to improve their ratings. At the end of the month, I will be holding end of the year
conferences, where I will meet with my appraises in order to review their final ratings and next
steps. Through this process of being an appraiser, I have learned the importance of being a coach
and getting to know your teachers feedback style. I have had many difficult conversations but after
each one of those, I believe I have been able to become a better appraiser.

Competency 007: The principal knows how to apply organizational, decision-making, and problemsolving skills to ensure an effective learning environment.
During this second semester, my principal has entrusted me some major projects like becoming the
campus TELPAS testing coordinator. The experience of managing such a large, complex, and
important task, have taught me the importance of being extremely organize. I have created systems
to track data from all aspects of the testing such as teacher trainings, completion of TELPAS
writings, and completion of TELPAS rosters among others. During the online reading assessment,
we had many teachers who called in sick, which forced me to think quickly and take decisions on
the spot in order to ensure an effective day of testing. I have also learned the importance of
communicating with all stakeholders in an effective and clear manner.
Competency 008: The principal knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and
management in relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial
management, and technology use.
As we get ready to close out the year, I have had the opportunity to work with the other
instructional coordinator on the campus in order to place orders for next academic year. Together
we compiled a list with items that are needed for the lower and upper grades which includes
workbooks, art supplies, additional desks, and other classroom materials. We also listed the prices
of all needed items in order to see how much money we needed to spend on these materials. I have
also been given a small budget from my principal in order to purchase attendance incentives for our
students and I have had to create a detailed report on how this money would be spent. Lastly I have
been able to meet with my principal and look at the positions that will be available for next year and
ways in which those positions could be coded differently or eliminated in order to relocate funds.
This would allow us to relocate more money to reading since that is our largest area of need.
Competency 009: The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and management to
the campus physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.
This semester I have had the opportunity to walk the building with my principal on a couple of
occasions. This tours have helped me understand the most important areas of the building and
where major technical issues tend to happen. Additionally, I have been working closely with the
custodial staff on a couple of projects that my principal assigned so I could have further experience.
Recently we experienced a power outage at the entire campus and during this event, I worked with
the administrative team to make sure every classroom had flashlights and the students were kept
safe and engaged in learning. Additionally we made sure the most important items were secured,
which included having running water and meals for lunch.
