TWENTY DUETS
RICHARD SHUEBRUKPREFACE
—
Playing Duets is the first step in Ensemble practice.
As much confidence and attention is required to play with one other performer as with a
hundred others. Therefore duet practice is the best substitute for playing in the band.
Observe the following rules carefully:
. Get your instruments in tune
. Notice the Key, whether Bb, F, Eb ete.
. Notice the rhythm sign whether # or ¥
. Notice the tempo sign— Andante or Presto
oP ern e
. Notice the power sign whether piano or forte
It is never necessary to play noisily. Anybody can play loud. Artists only can play soft
and well.
If you have the metody you must be prominent if somebody else has the melody you must
be subordinate.
Duets are like Conversation: You must listen as well as talk. Strive to play the music as it
is printed.
