Direct Instruction Model

January 22, 2015

Is about

Direct Instruction Model is when a teacher uses demonstration and explanation. Teachers will explain a subject in a step by step process and give examples. After they think a
student has knowledge of the lesson the teacher will give problems or questions to let the students answer to show they understand and can apply what they have learned.

Details
The theory of the Direct Instruction Model is to give step by step instructions to a student to have them have understanding of how
to come to a conclusion using a step by step process. This theory would be social cognitive.

Procedural Skill is the plan of this model. You need to be able to explain in detail the process of how you came to a conclusion
step by step. There is a specific set of step to this procedure. 1. You must identify the specific topic youre going to be talking
about. 2. Specify learning objectives-be very clear and explain what you want students to know how to do at the end. 3.Prepare
examples and problems- have students do problems with teacher guidance and then without teacher guidance.
There are 4 phases to implementing this model: 1. Introduction and Review: Try to get students interested and making sure
students have the prior understanding to be able to complete the new material that is being taught. 2. Presentation: New skill is
introduced and taught to the class with examples. 3. Guided practice: Students practice what has been taught with the help of the
teacher. 4. Independent Practice: Students should be able to practice the material on their own with no help from the teacher.
To assess each student at the end you they should have some type of activity or oral conversation that confirms that they have the
knowledge of the material. They should be able to answer questions correctly using the steps that they have been taught. You
should give students problems and have them work them out to check the knowledge and to see if they understand how to work the
examples or problems.
There are many ways to get a student motivated for this module. Some of the ways include getting the students motivated or
excited about what they are about to learn. Challenging students is also good for motivation. You could also use student
involvement in exercises or personalizing the exercises to involve them.

You modify this module according to what grade youre teaching, what subject youre teaching, and if any students have any type
of disabilities. You can use graphic organizers and technology.

This model is important because students will get an explanation and step by step instruction so that students know how to get an answer and have
the knowledge to get to the answer using the steps they were taught.
