Multi-Genre Reflection

Finding my audience for the multi-genre project was something that I struggled to do at
first. I wasnt sure whom I was writing to when I was researching my topic. After doing some of
the blog posts and looking back at my research I realized whom my audience is. My audience is
young adults who are entering college with no real idea what degree they want to study. I choose
this audience because I was in the same situation as these young adults. When I was accepted
into the University of North Carolina at Charlotte I had a set goal of entering into the
Architecture major field. Unfortunately this goal was not met but I was able to find the second
best thing which I now believe is truly a better fit; that second best thing being the Construction
Management field.
After establishing my audience I had to set my purpose for this paper; after all every
piece of writing has a purpose right? My purpose was found when I realized that my situation of
not knowing what degree to study in was something that could be found among students at every
college. So my purpose came to be this: to inform college students about the Construction
Management degree field and while doing so to persuade them to study it.
With my audience discovered and my purpose established I was able to implement the
research I had done to form the argument to persuade my audience into the Construction
Management degree field of study. I was able to do this by using strong research including
information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics presenting information about the job out look for
construction managers, which is projected to grow by 16% between 2012, and 2022.1 Other
research that I choose to include was how difficult it would be to obtain the degree in
Construction Management. In total it is a four-year program that can be broken down into two
parts, the first two years concentrate on math, science, and communication skills. The other half
of this program focuses on greater depth of study into civil infrastructure including elementary
structures, building systems, and foundations and earthwork.2 This information came from the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte so it may vary from school to school. Finally from my
research I was able to give examples of what sort of work that one could expect after graduation
from college including construction manager, working along architects, civil engineers, financial
manger, planning and town development this just to list a few.3
I decided to choose the PowerPoint presentation and a News Article to express my argument. My
thought was that the PowerPoint would be direct and to the point about the degree to persuade
those interested into doing more research for themselves. The PowerPoint could be presented to

a group of students who might not what career or major that they want. The news article was
used as an informative piece of writing giving my audience a few reasons to have interest in the
Construction Management degree. The PowerPoint would exist as a presentation that could be
used in perspective student gatherings. The news article could be found online with any news
source or school newspaper to reach out to the students of the university.
I appealed to my audience by connecting to them by explaining my situation and how I
choose the Construction Management degree. In the two genres that were used all three of
Aristotles appeals were used, relying most heavily on the visual mode in the PowerPoint and the
Linguistic mode in the news article. These two modes were used the most because of what words
I choose to use and how they were arranged as well as visually appealing to my audience to
persuade them.
With many young adults entering college with no idea what degree they want to study I
felt that now was a great time to persuade them into the Construction Management degree. The
construction career fields are booming right now and will continue to; what is needed is
knowledgeable minds of the construction career fields so that the work is done right. Conveying
my message in these two ways is practical for college kids, most read the news when they can
and many are confused as what to study and are looking for answers. That is why this is the time
for this information to be introduced to my audience as they need to see this amazing.
Overall I believe that my genre pieces are successful; they convey the meaning that they
hold and convince the audience of my argument. I believe that if my target audience was to read
the news article or sit thorough the PowerPoint presentation that they would be persuaded into
the Construction Management field of study and would have further interest to do research on
their own.
