Introductory lesson:
Mathematics
To introduce
students to
measurement in centimetres and
metres.

Year Level
Year 3

Implementation
Date
12 August 2015
Duration
90 minutes

Prior knowledge of learners (What do they already know?)

Students have a good understanding of numbers from 1-100.
Students have an understanding of the basic language of length and size (e.g. big, bigger, large, larger).
Students have a good understanding of how to use 30cm rulers and how to read them correctly.
Lesson objective/s
To encourage students to use correct language when discussing units of length.
To have students use simple instruments to measure items located within their classroom
environment in centimetres and metres.
To have students learn to identify that the length of measurement being metres is larger than
centimetres.
Evidence of learning
Participation in discussions
Completion of activity and associated worksheet
Resources
Number line on ground to demonstrate difference in lengths

Discuss with students the language of centimetres and metres.

Show students a 30cm ruler and demonstrate the markings and what they mean.
How many centimetres in 10cm? How many in 20cm? How many in 30cm?
Show students a metre ruler and demonstrate the markings and what they mean.
How many centimetres in 1 metre? How many in 2m? How many in 3m?
Refer to the number line on the ground and discuss what those markings mean.
How many metres are on the line?
Which is bigger centimetres or metres?

Explain expectations for completion of activity to students.

Students to work in pairs to complete the Measurement Treasure Map.
Students to locate items in the room and measure them using either the metre
ruler or centimetre ruler.
Students to decide which ruler needs to be used for which item.
Students must complete the questions on the treasure map that relate to that
item.
Which item is it?
Write the length in metres or centimetres.
Once treasure maps are completed correctly, students return to teacher for
assessment.
If correct, they receive a treasure chest with their bounty (Freddo Frogs).

Summarizing the
lesson

Students can colour in their treasure chests and also practice their knowledge of
measurements by testing each other using the number line.

Evaluation / Reflection
The number line took longer than anticipated to discuss, with there being some confusion initially
regarding centimetres and metres. However, the students did extremely well with their
understanding of the units of measurement when it came to physically using the rulers to measure
items in the classroom.
Students were special needs were able to be assisted individually whilst the other students were
engaged in measuring the items and completing the worksheet.
Many students returned to the number line after colouring in their treasure chest and made a game of
correctly answering measurements.
