Writing Analysis
Writing analysis are important to do for each student in your class. This allows the
teacher to see the students progression and where they might be having trouble. The purpose of
collecting writing analyses is to help better your students and help determine the direction of
your lesson plans. For this assessment, I studied two second grade students writing. These two
students are very opposite when it comes to writing topics, but they both enjoy writing. Both of
these students enjoy writing stories about things they enjoy. I thought this was interesting
because I am finding out that beginning writers will write about anything they are comfortable
with and know a lot about. For instance the first student really enjoys transformers. This student
can talk for hours about what each transformer does and the different levels they can reach. This
student really enjoys playing the angry birds transformer game as well, so instead of talking
about it when it wasnt time to talk this student is encouraged to write about it. The story had a
beginning and middle, but it is missing an ending. The story has transition words and helpful tips
about playing the game. There is also a picture on the first page of a transformer that is labeled to
help tell the story. After reading this story and noticing all of which I just mentioned, shows me
that this student understands how a story format is done. For further help, I would help this
student by doing a mini lesson on story endings. The second student I analyzed wrote more of a
letter. Within this piece there are questions for the reader asking them who their favorite author is
and leaving a blank for them to insert them. Then the student talks about their favorite author and
explains why. This student really likes Junie B. Jones and the rest of the letter is about Junie B.
Jones books. Since this is in a letter format, this student did not end the letter with an appropriate
letter ending. Therefore I would help this student review the format for writing a letter. This

student also did not draw any pictures, but they did write in the area where they can draw a
picture, I do not have a drawing. I found this is be acceptable for this writing piece because it
was a letter that did not really need pictures to help explain it. Unlike the first students writing
where the picture helped enhance what they were explaining.

Objective:
Students will:
1. Demonstrate the understanding of proper concluding statements and be aware of the
different formats for different types of writing.
Procedures:

Begin with asking the student what the proper structure to a story and write it on a board.

What is the proper structure for a story? Beginning, Middle, End

Give an example for each.

Now that the students are becoming more comfortable with the structure of stories and
letters, invite them to apply this to their own writing.

Send students back to their desks or reading/writing area for that day and allow them to
either revise a piece of writing or write something new with a beginning, middle, and
end.

Materials:

Writing notebook
Short story read aloud
