8-4.4 Explain the motions of Earth and the Moon and

the effects of these motions as they orbit the Sun
(including day, year, phases of the Moon, eclipses,
and tides).
Describe the lessons activities and content to provide a clear overview of the lesson.

Description and
Background Information

Lesson Objectives

It is important for students to know that Earth and

the Moon both revolve and rotate and these motions
have effects that can be observed on Earth.
What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson? Make sure that your
objective(s) are measurable.

As the position of the Moon changes as it revolves around Earth, the

observations of the Moon from Earth are seen as phases (new moon,
waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous,
third quarter, waning crescent.) The cause of the phases of the Moon
depends on how much of the sunlit side of the Moon faces Earth.
How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material?
How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept?
How

Varying Objectives for

Individuals Needs

I will reteach for students who do not understand. I will use my students who have mastered
the material as my helpers and students who are not proficient in English, I will use visuals
and speak clearly for them. will I vary these objectives for students who are presently
learning English?

Why is it important for the students to learn this content?

Statement of Purpose

Materials and Resources

It is important for students to know the phases of the moon and how it is effected by Earths
location.
What materials and supplies are needed to help your students achieve the stated
objectives? What will the teacher need? What will the students need? What other
resources are needed? Will you use resource speakers?
Computer
Powerpoint
Globe

Anticipatory Set

Student:
Notebook
Powerpoint
What will you do to motivate the students and get their attention? What is the hook that
will serve as a focus for the lessons activities?
Ask the students in a conversation on moons they have seen and ask them to describe
each phase they saw.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

How will I find out what students already know about this topic?

Pre-assessment

Teacher Modeling or
Demonstration

I will use a KWL chart.

Students and I will write down what they already know what they want to learn, before the
lesson and in conclusion, students will write down what they have learned, at the end of the
lesson.
What will I do to show students what is expected?
I will teach using a power point and other visuals that are needed for this lesson
What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task?

Guided Practice
Checking for Understanding

I will go through each phase of the moon and use oreo cookies to show the phases.
What questions will you ask to determine if students understand so far? What techniques
or strategies will be used to determine if students understand so far?
Throughout the lesson, I will ask questions on what was discussed.
What will students do by themselves to show that they have internalized the knowledge?

Independent Practice
Closure
Assessment
(attach to lesson plan)
Extension Activities

Students will work in groups of 8 to complete the eight phases of the moon using oreo
cookies and stand in order at the front of the class to explain.
How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? How will you wrap up
the lesson to reinforce concepts taught during the lesson?
I will close by having the students look at the moon each evening and post what they saw
on the bulletin board each morning.
What will students do to demonstrate what they have learned?
The assignment will be to look at the moon for the next seven nights and give me a brief
description of what you see by creating a powerpoint of the pictures kept.
What can students do at home or in the classroom to apply the knowledge or skills? How
could you use your colleagues or community agencies to improve student performance?
Students will continue to look at the moon until a new moon appears.

How will you use technology to assist students with learning the concepts? What technology will you

use to enhance the delivery and comprehension of your content?

Technology

Students will use the powerpoint to present their findings. I will use powerpoint to teach my lesson
with visuals.
How will you connect this lesson with other content areas across the curriculum?
The Arts: Students will draw and label the phases of the moon.

Connection Across the

Curriculum

Health: The will actively move around the class to complete the assignment
