Addition Facts

MCC.1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating
fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use
strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6
= 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number
leading to a ten (e.g., 13 4 = 13 3 1 = 10 1 = 9);
using the relationship between addition and
subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows
12 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or
known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known
equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

number line?
Can you add 3 + 3 without a number line?
What kind of problem is 5+ 5?
At the end, I will give students two extra problems they
cant come up with on their own with dice, because
dice only goes up to 6. I will ask them to do addition
problems with 8 and 9.
I will give the same test as I gave for a pretest.
The students will have 13 addition facts to answer in 2
and a half minutes.
I will tell the students that if they need to draw a
number line or to draw out the addition problem to
better understand the problem, they could. I will
encourage them to do it without these resources.
I will see if they improved by giving them the same
test that I gave for a pretest.
