Different between Spain and Portugal

One way Spain and Portugal differed on their reasons of exploration is Spain
exploration reason was to spread Christianity. Spain religion back at the time was Christian and
wanted to spread it because The European Conquistadors that colonized, ruled and practiced
European colonialism in South America were loyal Roman Catholics and strongly felt they
needed to spread Christianity to all people. On the other hand Portugals reason was to gain a
land in the new world. Under the leadership of prince henry the navigator, Portugal took
principal role during most of the fifteenth century in searching for a route to Asia by sailing
south around Africa. In the process, the Portuguese accumulated a wealth of knowledge about
navigation and the geography of the Atlantic Ocean.

Similarities of Spain and Portugals reasons of exploration

Despite the differences Spains and Portugals reasons of exploration they did
have some similarities, they both explored to trade goods and spices. Spain and Portugal led the
European Age of Discovery, an era lasting from roughly 1450-1750, in technological advances,
exploration, and colonization. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they emerged as leaders in this age; after all, the
Iberian Peninsula protrudes out from Europe into the Atlantic Ocean, and rivers and harbors provided an
ideal environment for sea trade as well as nurturing the art of boat building. Both countries had been
incorporated into the Islamic world during much of the middle Ages and emerged as newly reformulated

kingdoms in the period leading into the Age of Discovery. Each sought to push forth from their geographic
boundaries and, in so doing, enrich their kingdoms through exploration and trade.

Long term consequences of exploration

As everything else exploration has positive and negative consequences too. Some
positive consequences are it shifted population. It showed population growth people with different
nationality and religion, it introduced new languages such as Spanish and English, and it started to put its
economy in structure. To mention some of the negative consequences there were some disease like
chicken pox, flu and others. Spanish started to make Native American people their slavery and also they
were forcing people to join the military and use that military group to control Asian ports.
