I.

Introduction:
a. Purpose: to examine the messages and ideas sent/conveyed through
animation corporations (such as Disney and Nickelodeon). I am
primarily looking at positive and negative racial and gender
stereotypes.
b. Thesis: Disney, Nickelodeon, and other corporations use animation

as a means to reinforce negative racial and gender stereotypes

by portraying characters as inferior and helpless because of their
race or gender. While these stereotypes are be expected from
the mid 1900s, some of these stereotypes remain and are
carried out even into todays productions in the perceived postcivil rights era.
c. Despite having a history for conveying negative, racist and sexist
stereotypes, animation corporations have begun a shift that
appears to promote better racial representation and gender
equality.
