Unit Title: Factorization Methods

Name: Stephany Aguirre

Content Area: Algebra I

Grade Level: 9-12

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

A-SSE
1. Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context.
a.) Interpret parts of an expression, such as terms, factors, and coefficients.
3. Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.
a.) Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines.
A-REI
4. Solve quadratic equations in one variable.
a.) Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equation in x into an equation of the form (x p)^2 = q that
has the same solutions. Derive the quadratic formula from this form.
b.) Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x^2=49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula, and
factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation.
F-LE
6. Apply quadratic functions to physical problems, such as the motion of an object under the force of gravity.
Big Ideas:

Being able to factor quadratics can help us graph our functions with more ease. These are some of the ideas our unit will discuss.
1. What are quadratics and why do we need to factor?
2. What do the numbers and letters represent?
3. How does this relate to real life?
4. What if a function is not factorable, what can we do?
Unit Goals and Objectives:

While working in groups, describe the steps in factoring any quadratic.

When given a real life example, be able to use techniques we've learned to solve for the function.

Use methods such as: BOX Method, X-Method, the quadratic function to find solutions.

Recognize the similarities between horizontal intercepts, roots, solutions and zeros.

Unit Summary:

In this Mathematics unit, we will observe the many different methods used in factoring polynomials of all sorts. Once we learn the basics
of factoring, we will then use that knowledge to find the zeros or solutions to a quadratic. Quadratics are used everywhere; while playing
soccer, baseball, throwing a paper airplane even! The CA Content Standards demonstrate all the standards we will be covering in this unit
which include factorization, interpreting the zeros, and why a certain method triumphs over others. Students will assess themselves and
then work collaboratively to obtain an answer. I plan on making this unit as interactive as possible so you can understand all the
foundations behind Algebra. We will work individually, with a partner, with a group, and as an entire class in order to fully master
factoring.

Unit Resources:
Unit: Weebly, CA Common Core State Standards
Assessments: Rubi Star
Lesson 1: Prezi
Lesson 2: Wolfram Alpha, Khan Academy, 1XL

Useful Websites:
Prezi: This website can be used for teacher lectures as well as student presentations and many more various presentations. It is a great alternative to the conventional
power point presentation and allows for easy collaboration since it is stored in the cloud. You can start with a template or from scratch. The sign up is quick, easy and free.
Wolfram Alpha: This site is a search engine specific to education. The site is very well organized for easy navigation through different categories.
Khan Academy: Khan Academy provides video clips for many topics we will cover in Algebra I class and Geometry class. It is a great site for reviewing material because
sometimes you may not understand the way I explain a certain topic; so, it is useful to have an alternate explanation of the same topic
1XL: At 1XL you can find that each subject has its own list of all the skills organized into categories. It is so fantastic because each skill in the list has quizzes so you can
practice your skills and test yourself throughout the school year! This will sharpen your skills as well as prepare you for in class quizzes. The site will track your score,
and the questions will automatically increase in difficulty as you improve so you learn at your own pace!
