Tena koe Andrew,

s18 Application Approval

Ngati Kuta Resource Management Unit approves the application

for a section 18 authority for archaeological sites QO5 682 (a
midden) and
QO5 71 (pits or burial sites).

QO5 682 been excavated in 1981 and moa and seal bone were
there with an oyster shell dated 1220-1420 (95% probability).
Recent studies reveal that 90% of the midden has eroded and had
cockle and pipi shells and fire cracked rock through it. The koiwi
were uncovered by erosion and the safety of these are of great
concern to our hapu. We wish to have these koiwi investigated
further. We also want the area protected while the stand down
period is observed and indeed, until there is a place to re-inter the
koiwi on the island.

QO5 71 is 5 pits, 3 of which are approximately 2 metres long and

are under 1m wide running in an east west orientation. The limited
investigations require further study. Once this whole area is studied,
this may be a suitable re-internment wahitapu.

Kia ora,
Helen Mountain Harte
