Course Description:

This course will prepare the student to practice the science of oral and
maxillofacial radiography.

Learning Experiences:

Lecture, discussion, written assignment, online via Blackboard,


demonstration, hands-on, class participation, collaborative learning, quiz

each dental hygiene course.

At the conclusion of this course, the student will gain a working knowledge
of, and a proficiency in, the application of the principles, biology, physics,
safety, quality assurance, and imaging technique of radiology. In addition,
the student will demonstrate competent knowledge of intra and extra-oral
techniques, patient problems, processing, mounting and general
interpretation.

Criteria for Laboratory


Assignments:
1. Each student will locate his or her own patients. Explain to the
patients that they must be able to come at the assigned time and
they will be here for 3 to 4 hours.
2. All patients must have an OHS appointment prior to radiography. The
same parameters regarding health history apply. (Exception may be
prophylactic antibiotic treatment).
3. All patients must have radiographs prescribed by their current dentist.
(Any prescription older than 12 months cannot be honored.)
4. Prescriptions must have the dentists signature. No signature stamps
allowed. Signature of a receptionist, assistant or hygienist is not
acceptable.
5. Based on the ADA Guidelines for Prescribing Radiographs, (Chapter15):
It is generally recommended that the patient not have been exposed
to interproximal films for the past 12 months.
It is generally recommended that the patient not have been exposed
to a complete series in the last 5 years.
It is generally recommended that the patient not have been exposed
to a panoramic film in the last 3 years.
6. There must always be a need, as deemed by a dentists prescription.
Radiographs are never taken because the student needs to complete
an assignment.
7. The student must demonstrate professionalism, honesty, and
cooperation in obtaining the prescriptions.
8. Forging a signature of a dentist or obtaining the prescription by
coercion and without need (non-maleficence) will result in dismissal
from the program.
The student will participate in the operation and care of darkroom
activities. Each student will assist in assigned activities by:

Assisting in the darkroom on rotation assignment by:

c. caring for all processors under the supervision of faculty or Mrs.

All students must be in uniform as described in the Dental Hygiene I


Manual. All guidelines pertaining to clinic regarding dress and SOP for

infection control applies. All students must wear current radiography


dosimeter badges at all times.

Class Organization
Learning Outcomes:

Achieve credit (80%) for four (4) complete series (CSR) on DXTTR,
using the paralleling technique. (One may be digital)
Three using a vertical interproximal (VIP) and one using a
horizontal interproximal view (HIP).
Demonstrate written knowledge and on demand demonstration of
bisection technique.
Complete set of place no expose on partner with faculty
observation.
Achieve credit (80%) for one (1) complete series on an adult patient
with a complete dentition.
Achieve credit (80%) for one (1) complete series on a semi-edentulous
adult patient.
Achieve credit (80%) for one (1) complete series on a pedodontic
patient primary or transitional dentition patient.
Achieve credit (80%) for four (4) complete sets of horizontal
interproximal radiographs on either DXTTR or a patient. (Two must be
digital)
Achieve credit (80%) for four (4) complete sets of vertical
interproximal radiographs on either DXTTR or a patient. (Two must be
digital)
Achieve credit (80%) for one (1) panoramic film on an adult or child
patient.
Achieve credit (S or U) for two (2) occlusal films (1 max. 1 mand.) on
DXTTR (size 4) or adult patient.
Achieve credit (S or U) for processing the above two occlusal films in
the manual processor.
Complete two darkroom experiments assigned by faculty
Turn in assignment activity sheet each day (no make ups)
Lab evaluations

The student will be able to demonstrate to laboratory and clinical


competency with a minimum of 80% proficiency:

The basic principles of radiography techniques for specific intra and


extra oral placement.
Necessary factors demonstrating the quality of the beam and image
production, including digital radiography.
Important radiation protection procedures for the operator and the
patient.
The proper selections of appropriate radiographic surveys, film or
sensor size, speed, processing, duplication and record keeping.
Quality Assurance (QA) exposure and processing procedures, including
infection control.
Proper viewing techniques, basic principles of interpretation.

Grading Scale:

A basic understanding of viewing and interpreting normal anatomical


structures.
The evaluation of radiographic techniques and problem solving
solutions necessary to make the proper corrections.

Minimum grade for successful completion is 80 % (2.0). As in all dental
hygiene courses, the student must achieve an 80% or greater to progress in
the dental hygiene program. Below 80% = Student may not continue on to
next semester.
Course grade is based on points over points. Each students total points
will vary dependent upon lab activities.
Note: the Lecture DHYG 113 is a separate designated course and must be
passed by a minimum of 80%; the grade in lecture is not connected to the
grade in lab.

Exams and quizzes:


Weekly reading quizzes cannot be made up. Exams must be made-up
within five days and will be completed at MCCs Testing Center.
Homework:
Weekly homework is due the following week and must be turned in
within the first five minutes once class begins. Assignments turned in
beyond this point are considered late.
Course Incompletes:
A student must initiate a request for an "I" (Incomplete Grade). The
"I" will be given at the sole discretion of the instructor.
An "I" may be given only when the student:
Has completed at least 75% of the class (excluding the final exam) but
is unable to complete the class work because of extraordinary,
unusual or unforeseen circumstances or other compelling reasons.
Has done passing work in the course and can complete the required
work without repeating the course.

The Accreditation Body of this program (American Dental Association


Commission on Dental Accreditation) requires that students attend specific
courses with specific content in order to meet the requirements for
completion of an accredited program.

Only students who graduate from approved programs may practice as


licensed dental hygienists.

All students are expected to attend class as they are held responsible
for the requirements of the course.
Any student who does not attend class will be marked absent.
Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class as required.
Students entering after attendance is taken will be marked late; two
late marks will equal one absence.
Any student leaving class early will be marked late; two late marks will
equal one absence.
Each absence will result in a 2% deduction in the final grade.
All absences will be reported to MCC.
Withdrawals: A grade of "W" indicates official withdrawal from a
course in which a student has enrolled. A student must initiate the
process to withdraw by submitting a worksheet to the Registration
Office. Students are encouraged to discuss their reasons for their
withdrawal with their counselor/advisor prior to withdrawing from the
course.

are going to be late.

student receiving an automatic 0.0 on the quiz or exam with no

acquisition of tests and/or other academic materials (without
permission), are violations of college conduct per MCC Student Code of
Conduct.
This includes students who aid and abet as well as those who attempt
such behavior.
