and maintain a simple to moderate level of
conversation about their families without
using Spanish. For example they can talk
about how many siblings they have and
where they live or who they are related to.

Bingo Card with English words and phrases

Bingo pieces
Reference sheet- Spanish to English
Answer key to E-board workout

Procedure
1) Have the students, after saying their
name, tell the class something interesting
about them or their favorite activity.
2) Once they have shared their fact about
themselves, encourage the students to meet
other students in the class that have the
same interests as them. (in English if
possible, and if they can't, Spanish is fine too,
we just want them to get to know each other
and feel more comfortable)
3) Have Mrs. Smith hand out the reference
sheet to the class.
4) Mrs. Smith will briefly go over the
reference sheet. The reference sheet has the
English to Spanish translations of the family
vocabulary they will be learning and using to
have conversations.
5) For a warm-up to get to know each other
better, have the students try to say the words
on the sheet out loud to the class. Have Mrs.
Smith help them if they pronounce the words
wrong.
6) After that, have Mrs. Smith introduce
phrases that are commonly used in a
conversation talking about family like,
Cuntas personas hay en tu familia ? (How
many people are in your family?), Quin es
su relacin con ? (How are you related to
them?), Cuntos primos tienes? (How many
siblings do you have?), Dnde vive su
familia? (Where does your family live?)
7) For a fun activity, on the E-Board, students
will learn what words or phrases on the
reference sheet that was passed out, dealing
with the family vocabulary in Spanish, go with
the correct english translations (matching).
8) Mrs. Smith will have volunteers walk up to
the board and try to match the correct
pictures and words/phrases. If they answer

incorrectly, encourage them to try again!

9) Students will then be grouped into teams
and the teacher will ask the question, for
example the teacher might ask them in
spanish where do you live? and the first
team to write the answer in english on the eboard wins. They will do this till a team has 10
points.

Assessment

For the assessment the students will play a

fun game of BINGO! The teacher will draw
words from a container, and the students will
match the word with the phrases on their
BINGO cards. The winner receives 2 pieces
of candy!

Teachers need to exercise a lot of patience with English as second language learners because
they are speaking a different language at school then they are at home for the most part. In
order for the teacher to help the students succeed they have to understand each student's level
of proficiency and educational history. This helped with the lesson plan because it told us that
we needed to make a lesson plan based off of everyone in the classrooms needs and levels
that they are on.

Second Article Summary:

How to Teach English: Tips for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. (n.d.). Retrieved

This article talks about how one of the first skills needed in order to master teaching English as
a second language is the ability to use body gestures and movements when teaching. For
example, acting out words or phrases. Also, they should only speak English in the classroom
and no Spanish. This allows them to pick up on the language they are learning a lot faster.
Lastly, they should practice common phrases until they are mastered and feel comfortable. This
helped us with our lesson plan because it helped guide us on the path of how to design the
lesson. We incorporated teaching common phrases and included a game to help make the
common phrases more fun for the students to learn.
