In My Classroom

My Teaching Philosophy
I cannot say that I follow one
particular teaching philosophy, but rather I
combine many.
In a way I am a constructivist. The
things that we work the hardest for are the
things in life that are most cherished. By
having students construct their learning, I
believe that students will learn and want to
learn more.
I also believe in the whole brain
philosophy. Students need a change in scenery
every 10 to 15 minutes. When students teach
their peers what they have just learned, do a
call and response to gain attention, or have a
motion to help explain a concept then students
are moving and changing scenery. Whole
brain learning allows students to use multiple
senses, which in turn helps to understand and
remember concepts better.
A major aspect of my teaching is
flexibility. As a teacher, I need to be flexible.
I need to be able to stop a lesson if it is not effective, and try something else. I also believe
that with each group of students that comes
into a classroom, my philosophy with change.
What works one year, may not work the next.
Being able to make changes with out getting
overwhelmed is crucial.

Anyone who walks into my classroom will see:

Communication
In my classroom, it is important that students
understand what their role is in the classroom.
Students need to have a clear understanding of
classroom rules and expectations.
Students also need to communicate with me as
the teacher. My students will know that my
role is to support and help them grow as not
only learners, but as people as well.
Cooperative Learning
Many times, students learn best when they are
working with their peers. Students use the
same level of language in many situations.
Cooperative learning will take place in my
classroom because it is a strategy that when
done correctly holds students accountable for
their learning as well as teaches an important
life lesson of working with others.
Respect
Respect is volatile in my classroom. There is
respect for each other, different learning styles,
and different cultures. My classroom is like a
family, families need to support and respect
every member.
Variation
All students learn in different ways. In my
classroom, lessons will be taught in a variety of
different strategies. Some students learn by
listening, others by learning, others by writing,
and others by a combination. My teaching will
incorporate the needs and accommodations of
all my students.
