Activities Yesterday, we learned about some plants and animals that are special to the
African Plains and the plants and animals we see in Arlington every day. Today, we are
going to compare and contrast, compare means to see the similarities, the things that are
the same, and contrasting is when we look for the differences, and the things that are
different. (Write those words on the board) I have a chart, where on one side you will
write the things that are native, or live, in Arlington or facts about Arlington and on the
other side you will write the things that are native to African Plains or facts about the
plains. For example, I might say the African Plains are flat but Arlington isnt flat.
Isnt is a contraction word, which is a combination of two words into one.

Now, I want you all to fill out the chart and then turn and talk to someone next to you
and tell them one fact about African Plains and one fact about Arlington you wrote
about. I want you to start your sentence with the words in Africa there isbut in
Arlington, there isnt (write this on the board). You can also start your sentence with
in Africa there isand in Arlington there also is I then want you to write down what
you told your partner. When you write it down, I want you to place the picture and word
label next to the statement that includes that picture or word.

discussed many different things we had found out and organized the facts you wrote
down in a chart.
