TEAMTALK

MADE WITH LOVE

Om Swastiastu...

When you go strolling around a traditional market on the island no matter whether it is
in Kuta, Ubud, or elsewhere you will nd stalls selling handcrafted art; from paintings
to statues, pottery to jewelry. It is easy to say no to these sellers when they offer you their
goods while you are walking by their stores, but once you see how these artists put their
hearts into creating each of the items, youll feel more connected to their creations and it
will be hard to resist buying them.
So this month we show you how some of these precious jewels and art are made,
and how each one of them has a story of its own. Flip through LIFESTYLE & LEISURE

to read about a pearl farm in Penyabangan, North Bali, where Atlas Pearls and Perfumes
cultivate the worlds best living gems, South Sea pearls. A photo collection by Sansad
Shrestha in FOTO FOLIO also reveals the makings of Gaya Ceramics & Design with
a closer look.
The Balinese love of art is also reected strongly in their traditions. Our contributor
Paul V. Walters witnessed this rsthand when he a joined a grand cremation in
Blangsinga village, which he shares with us in CRAFT & CULTURE. An interview with
two Balinese shadow puppet masters on the Wayang Exhibition at Conrad Bali will also
give you more insights about its legacy. Read about it as we talk with I Ketut Sudiana
and I Wayan Wija in PROFILE & PORTRAIT.
Not only that, we also update you with whats new outside of the island of Bali.
A trip to Tebing Keraton in BEYOND BALI might inspire you to travel to Bandung in
West Java, while CAPITAL CORNER explores the hottest dining places in Jakarta.
Happy ipping through our pages, and we hope youll nd the best handmade
products on the island to bring back home.

BB: You have traveled all around the world, so where is the
most interesting place youve ever been?
S: I once worked in Oman, and lived in a palace which was
owned by the ruler of Oman. Not a terrible way to experience
the local culture.
BB: How good do you think your Indonesian language is?
S: It denitely needs improvement. Although I have a favorite
Indonesian phrase, mimpi manis. I always say it to my kids
every night.
BB: Talking about the resort, why do you think Benoa is the
perfect spot?
S: It is now easily accessed via the toll road from the airport.
Not to mention it has a nice beach and a perfect pathway all
the way to the Nusa Dua area. Weve been in love with this
area since the beginning.
BB: How would you describe the hotel?
S: This is a laid-back resort where everyone is relaxed and
friendly. In fact, we want the staff to be on a rst-name basis
with the guests. It is a perfect place for families as well. This
resort is denitely making a new standard on the island.

BB: If you have family or friends visiting Bali, where do you

take them?
S: The temples are denitely on the list as you can feel
the spirit of Balinese people and what this island means
to them. But for a day out with the children, I would
recommend the waterparks. Both Waterbom Bali and
Splash Waterpark Bali are super fun for kids.

Balis rst cable wake park is fun for everyone!

Then theres Wakeboards, which

are a little more advanced they
have bindings that lock your feet

wakeboard.
The Wake Skate is essentially a
wakeboard without having to lock
your feet into bindings. It gives a
freer feel and allows you to do all
the tricks that you can usually do
on a skateboard, like pop shove-its,
kick ips, and ollies. Its also a lot

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot

more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases
are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers
have multiple partners from around the world.
They are not checked for sexually transmitted
diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms,
available over the counter at pharmacies.
