Activity: Gathering Together

OVERVIEW OF THE ACTIVITY


In this activity students are to plan in groups, a gathering of different groups found in the
period of the Gold Rush. They are to come up with rules that will align with each groups
beliefs while also taking into account the similarities and differences of other groups.

STATEMENT OF IDENTIFICATION
Students will be using the literacy, critical and creative thinking and ICT general capabilities
in this activity because of the creative and literary nature. The students need to have an
understanding of the learning area vocabulary and be able to comprehend the facts in the
fact sheets given to them. They need to be able to process the information and identify and
clarify their ideas on their posters. They are to use ICT to create their poster and generate
their ideas and create their invitation to the gathering.

INQUIRY QUESTION: How will you plan a gathering of different groups from the Gold Rush?
TEACHER KNOWLEDGE
For this activity teachers need to know what groups were found in the Victorian gold rush
and the different beliefs and cultures they were involved with and believed in. Teachers
need to have had a previous lesson with students discussing beliefs and values and how
important different beliefs and values are to different groups and how these values and
beliefs affect relationships with others. Teachers are to have discussed with students
elements to keep in mind when planning a gathering of different people with different
beliefs and the importance of rules in a gathering of people.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this lesson students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to:
Plan a gathering of people with different beliefs and understandings

Discuss the importance of inclusion


Connect the importance of rules to understanding different beliefs

LEARNING INTENTIONS:

We will plan a gathering of people from the Gold Rush


We will create rules which all groups must follow at this gathering

STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS
1. As a group develop 5 rules for a gathering of people
2. Once you have developed your rules, discuss how these rules could apply to people
in the gold fields
3. If you think of any other rules that could apply to the different members of the groups
found at the Gold Rush add these
4. Create a rules poster using Phoster and the rules you have just discussed and
created for your gathering.
5. Discuss as a group what you will put on your invitation to the gathering that will be
sent to all the groups found in the Gold Rush
a. Where will the gathering be held
b. Who will be there
c. What to bring
d. What will happen at the gathering
6. Create the invitation using the Invitation maker app on the iPad
7. Discuss as a class the different rules your group discussed and came up with for
your gathering.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUTION OF STUDENT LEARNING:


Assessment of learning is taking place in this activity as students are to use their previous
understanding of rules and beliefs to form their creations. Teachers will use the invitations
and rule posters to form their assessment of students understandings of these content
descriptors in Civics and Citizenship.
