Lesson Plan

Grade: 5
Subject: Middle School Mathematics and Italian

Topic: Adding and subtracting fractions

Objective: The students will be able to (SWBAT) add and subtract fractions with different
dominators.
Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing
given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or
difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12.
(In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)
Materials: Teacher: Power point, projector and screen, dry erase markers, white board, handouts
and worksheets for students, markers, rulers, pizza or pie, plates.
Students: Pencil, notebooks
Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge: The students already know how to add and subtract whole
numbers and fractions with the same denominators.

Anticipatory Set: Walk into class with a pizza, cake or pie. This should get the students excited
for a lesson involving food.
Input and Modeling: The teacher will provide a power point presentation with a print out for
students. This PowerPoint presentation will provide multiple ways of how to add and subtract
fractions, this includes fraction bars and fraction circles. The PowerPoint will include multiple
ways of using fractions to keep the students interested, such as cooking or sports. It will also
provide vocabulary needed, such as denominator, common denominator, and least common
denominator.
Student Practice and Checking for Understanding1. The students will be broken into groups of 2-3 students. Each group be given a round
piece of paper. These papers represent a pizza. The teacher will also provide, 4
markers or colored pencils, rulers, and the word problem.
2. Each group will need to solve a hard word problem about four people who ate pizza.
The word problem includes both addition a subtraction of fractions with unlike
denominators.
3. They will be asked to solve the word problem by using the circular paper given to
them. They will divide their pizza into the pizza slices. The word problem will
include three different denominators. In the end there should be 16 pieces of pizza
with four different colors representing a different person each. The goal is to find out
how much of the pizza is left. Their mathematical work may be done on the paper
with the word problem written on it. The teacher will walk around the classroom to
give assistance if needed. When finished they will hand in their pizza and work to the
teacher.

4. The first group to finish gets first dibs to the pizza or pie that the teacher has provided
for the class to eat.
Closure: Lesson Wrap-up and Culminating activity
1. The students will be given an assignment comparing percentage, decimals and

fractions.

This assignment will be include equivalent fractions, decimals and percent. The students will be
coloring in circles to represent all three. This assignment will show how all three topics are
related.
2.

At the end of the unit of study the students will be tested on fractions, percentage and

decimals. The test will include adding and subtracting all topics, converting one into another and
word problems
3. At the end of the unit students will be given a quiz in which they will be graded with a rubric
that evaluates the grammar, the vocabulary, spelling and organization of learned sentences and
vocabulary as well as the cultural aspect of Italy. They will also be quizzed on fractions,
decimals and percentage dealing with the culture of Italy.
