Rationale Statement for Standard 10
Statement of Standard Ten: The Teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and
opportunities to take responsibility for students learning, to collaborate with learners, families,
colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to
advance the profession. (NJPTS, 2014, P.37)
Name of Artifact: Welcome Letter
Date of Artifact: Spring 2015
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-02
Rationale Statement: This rationale goes along with the Welcome Letter assignment.
This was a mock welcome letter welcoming my students and their family to my class. I wrote
about myself, what I supplies I expect the students to have, what I expect my future homework
policy will be and what I would like each student to bring into class at the start of the year. This
artifact directly relates to standard 10 in regards to 10.ii. 2 The teacher understands that
alignment of family, school and community spheres of influence enhances student learning and
that discontinuity in these spheres of influence interferes with learning. In this article I included
both the student and their family. I also included community by telling them about myself so
they would get to know me, as well as asking them to bring in supplies for the class to share a
community.
From doing this article I learned how important it is to introduce yourself at the start of
the school year. It is always good for students and their family to know a little about the person
who will be teaching them for the next nine months. I have to be able to be comfortable around

the students, if I tell them about myself and my expectations from the get go there is no reason
for misunderstandings or feeling uncomfortable. I got the idea for the tissue boxes from my eight
grade Algebra class. My teacher asked us to bring in tissues because the school ones were not
very good. Everybody did bring in a box, they lasted for most of the year.
I can use this artifact as a welcome letter in my future career. I would of course modify it
to fit the schools regulations and include rules if needed. I could expand on the ideas I already
have in this letter to make a letter all members of the family could look at and get to know me.
