LocalhighschoolparticipatedinprogramofinclusionwiththeUniversityofNew
HampshiresInstituteonDisability(IOD).Thisprogramwasdesignedtohelpgraduallybring
studentsintopublicschoolsystemsandregularclasses.Theprogramreceivedscrutinyfornot
givingstudentswithspecialneedstheindividualassistancetheyneeded,butitprovidedaway
forthosestudentstoexpandtheirhorizons.
In1997,JocelynCurtingraduatedfromConcordHighSchool.Sheisoneofthegreat
examplesinNewHampshireoftheprogramssuccess.Althoughshecanonlycommunicate
throughbodyposturesandfacialexpressions(RettSyndrome)shestillparticipatedingeneral
classesatConcordHighSchool.Sheusedherexperiencesinhighschooltocreateamodeling
portfolio.Althoughshecantevencommunicateshehasbeenabletointerviewwithanumberof
topagenciesinNewYork.
Whentheprogramfirststarted,thechildrennormallywouldtakeclassesina
selfcontainedclassroomwithotherkidswithdisabilities.Classroomwasseparatedupon
graduationbaseduponseverityofthedisability.Theywouldincludechildrenwithdisabilitiesin
elementaryschool,butwhentheywouldgraduate(ormoveon)tomiddleschooltheywould
separatethechildren.Theycreatedthehighschoolprogramgoalwastoincreaseaccessand
supportforstudentswithdisabilitiesatNewHampshirespostsecondaryschools.
Amroisoneofthosestudentsassimilatedintoaregularhighschool.Theschoolsfaculty
triedtohelphimintoadjustproperlybyaskingthefootballcoachtoletAmrobeanassistant
manager.Thewholeteamacceptedhimandtriedtohelphimgetusetotheschool.Teammates

servedasmentorswhohelpedhimwithschoolworkandlifeoutsidetheclassroom.Hecame
withnoformofcommunicationbesidesYesandNo.Afterbeingexposed,helearnedhowto
spellandwrite.Hecouldrespondtoquestionsbywritingoutanswers.Eventuallyheaskedto
movefromthemanagerofthefootballteamtoaplayer.Duringonegamehekickedofffour
times.Althoughitwasaspecialoccasion,noonemadeadealbuttreatedhimasanequal.
Amrowasabletofinishhisseniorprojectandgraduatewiththerestofhisclass.Henowworks
fulltimeinacandleshopinthetownwhereneighborsandformerclassmatescontinuetovisit
him.
