Topic: Effects of educational technology in the classroom
Inquiry: Does technology help or hinder students learning capabilities in the
classroom?
Proposed thesis: The incorporation of technology into the classrooms of
children has, and will continue to, increase their capacity for knowledge.

This journal finds itself relevant to my topic as it acts as the naysayers
within my paper. I an academic paper it is important to include an
opinion that is opposite of my own and of my own argument so that it
proves to the readers I am not biased with my topic. In this journal, the
authors talk about a man named Tim OShea who wrote a book called
Mindstorms 2 which essentially is about his pessimistic view of how
technology within education is detrimental to learning capabilities. For
example the journal distinctly points out that OShea is largely against
bringing technology into classrooms as he believes teaching students
how to program is a bad idea. He believes students should be raised
and taught through traditional standings, rather than teaching the
students innovative ideas. I plan to address OSheas opinion and use it

to strengthen my argument of how technology is beneficial in
academics.
Raizen, Senta A. Making Way for Technology Education. Journal of Science

This journal is built upon a very strong opinion from the author that
scientific, technological, and vocational curriculums in schools should
begin developing alongside the rate of technology. In other words,
Raizen believes that so long as technology is growing and advancing,
so should the curriculums within education. Raizen talks about how the
incorporation of technology in classrooms can eliminate the stereotype
that boys are the only ones capable of understanding technology.
Technology education employing sophisticated equipment is generally
seen as being more relevant to both boys and girls than approaches
based on older craft traditions. I plan to use this to talk about diversity
and how more and more students that are graduating as engineers are
women.

Overall, this article lists the benefits of having technology in the
classroom. In my paper I plan to include these pros in order to help

counteract the cons listed from my first source in order to add depth
and clarity in my paper. I found this article particularly interesting as
well because it is written in such a way as a response to a naysayer, so
I believe this will be advantageous to use when I am arguing my point.
The article begins with a short
story about the authors receiving an email from someone that
disagrees with technology being in the classroom and throughout the
article the authors are giving reasons as to why they believe
technology is beneficial. To gain a sense of the opinions the authors
have in this article I pulled this quote where the authors are describing
the word technology: the main expression of human activity on the
planet Earth This statement is very string and is very opinionated so
I plan on using its strong backbone to my advantage.

Waks focuses more along the lines of the physical expanding of
students knowledge by incorporating technology into their curriculum.
The term Lateral Thinking as found in the title of Waks work refers to
the new skill we as human have to acquire in order to keep up with all
of the information being sent our way. The more technology advances,
the more we are able to access and learn about and become scholars

on. Technology opens up a whole new world of information and with
that growth of information, comes the responsibility to widen our range
of knowledge and adapt to the vastly growing amount of information
that is coming straight at us. Waks states the emergence of lateral
thinking in recent years is a natural reaction to the enormous increase
of information a human being is bombarded with, in the postIndustrial Revolution era. I will use this concept to argue that as an
educator, one must provide students with knowledge that will help
them within their lifetime. And as a student, our lifetime has adapted
to the technological era, so I believe students should be caught up with
the increasing technological ways.

In this article, Scherer makes her main point about how Education is
and will continue to move as technology does the same. This article is
different form the others I have chosen because it talks about different
factors such as taking classes online and how that can be beneficial to
students. Especially college students that have crazy schedules and
cannot always fit the perfect schedule together, online classes provide
the opportunity for them to earn the remaining credits they need to get
their degree.
