Building Report Card

I am doing my field experience in the Pittsburg school district. As I visited the

ksde.org website, I found that 64% of the student population in the district are at an
economic disadvantage. I expected the number to be around this because of the lack of
full time jobs offered in the pittsburg community. The ethnicity of the school district is
72% white, 4% African-American, 14% Hispanic, and 10% other. I feel like the other
category is fairly higher than I would have guessed and can only assume it consist of
native americans, due to the fact that we are close to the borders of Oklahoma. The
district shows that they have more kids meeting the state standards in their district, but
are doing worse than what they accomplished the previous year.
Westside Elementary is the school building at which I am placed in. The
economic disadvantage is higher than the district at 76% of the school. I would have to
assume that this is because of the location of the school, in the district. I also checked
to see what the other elementary schools in the district had and found that lakeside was
comparable at 68%, but George Nettles only had 42% of their students in the economic
disadvantage. George Nettles is the most southern school, and has a more friendly
community that surrounds it. George Nettles also has the least amount of hispanics in
the school as well. Westsides ethnicity has 67% whites, 23% hispanics, 3% AfricanAmerican, and 6% other. Westside has the highest percentage of hispanic students and
also has the higher percentage of SES students.
While looking at the assessment test scores for reading at the third grade I notice
that they are behind the standard of what other schools are at in the district and well

behind of what the average is of the state. Students with a disability in the school
building are also behind in their test scores compared to the rest of the district, with only
half of the students meeting the state standard. The building is really not making the cut
in the economic disadvantage category. The english language learners have 39% of the
students not making the average for the state reading assessment.
In the mathematics assessment the building had another big decrease on their
students scores. 34% did not meet the state standard while the average was 19% that
fell short of the standard. They also went from 5% of an academic warning to 17%. This
is a very big jump and should be an something the building needs to look at in order to
figure out how to make a change for the better. The economically disadvantage
progressed in a positive manner, jumping 8% that met the standard score from last year.
Their students with disabilities also improved from last years test. In 2012, 60% of these
students did not meet the state standard but in 2013, 47% fell short of the standard
score. The state average is 34% that do not make the standard score, so there is still
plenty of improvement.
