UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson is to teach the difference in figurative languages, to be able to identify them, and to learn the given names for
each.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Students will be expected to note down the different figurative languages given by the website that I provide.
Next, they will be given a handout and they will write what they feel is the best answer choice to each sentence
on the handout.

When each student is finished, they will trade papers and we will go over them. Students will mark down whatever is not
correct on whoever paper that they have.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
CCSS.ELA- Literacy. L. 5.5.A. Interpret figurative language, including similes, metaphors, in context.
CCSS.ELA- Literacy. L. 5.5.B. Recognize and explain the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs.
MATERIALS:
Handout with sentences on it that they will have to identify what figurative language is being used.

and go to the website. For their own reference, they will write down the following words and their meanings on
the website, onto a separate sheet of paper. They are to use the definitions as a guide to refer to when identifying
the sentences.
The use of technology will be integrated by the website provided so they know what the main figure
languages are and the meanings of each.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:


The key concepts for this lesson is for students to be able to identify the different figures of speech that we use
on a day to day basis.
The critical academic language is the figures of speech and their meanings.
This lesson is a continuation of stories students have previously read, and can be applied to other assignments
that they have previously worked on, and they can be shown that we use it a lot in literature and writing.
In stories that we will read in the future, I will ask what figure of speech is used in a single sentence out of the
story.
I will need to plan differentiated activities because some students may have trouble distinguishing between the
following figures of speech.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: I will begin by asking does anyone know what figurative language is.

I will then tell them that it is a type of language we use to compare two separate ideas. It can be exaggerated and
fiction.
I will then tell them that today they will visit a website and write down the different ones. They will use those
same definitions to identify which figure of speech best describes the sentence I provide on the handout.
Procedures: I will tell students to get out a piece of paper and their pencil.
Students will go to the computers that they will have access to.
The website will be written on the board. They will copy the URL into the search engine and go to the website.
They will copy the definitions onto their piece of paper.
If any student has trouble typing the URL I will help them
Once all students are complete, they will return to their desk in which the handout will be there.
They will use the definitions that copied onto their piece of notebook paper to help them identify which figure
of speech is used.
Closure: Students will trade papers, and as a class I will go over what answers are correct, while they grade one
anothers. They will pass them up to me once we are finished.
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

I threw a rock into the Amazon River. The sound it made was splash! Which figure of speech is best shown in
this sentence? The student will have the options of simile, metaphor, personification, idiom, onomatopoeia, or
hyperbole.

MODIFICATIONS:
For students who struggled with the assignment, I will give homework to give students more practice with the
figures of speech and I will also give a test to test the knowledge of how well each student knows the difference
between each figure of speech.
